Simon Crosby, CET, CFPS is a Project Manager at Randal Brown & Associates Engineering Ltd., a building code and fire protection engineering firm. Simon provides fire protection engineering services on a wide variety of projects, including numerous fire alarm design and consulting projects. With an active interest in professional and industry development, Simon has served on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Fire Alarm Association since 2005. He is also an active member of numerous code and standard development committees including the ULC S500F Committee, the ULC Subcommittee on Commissioning, the ULC-S524 and ULC-S573 Working Groups, and the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes Task Group on Fire Alarm Systems.

SPEAKERS

Paul Jewett, has been actively involved in fire alarm inspection and service for over 30 years, specializing in large hotels and hospitals. Paul is a qualified CFAA instructor, has presented courses at several colleges and has participated in working groups for ULC standards. He is a long standing member of the CFAA and has served on the National Board of Directors for over 20 years and became a Registered Fire Alarm Technician in 1986. Paul is currently the Special Projects and Training Manager for the Mircom Group of Companies

Rick Murray C.E.T., L.E.L., EngL. B.C. holds a limited licence as a professional engineer in Ontario and British Columbia in the area of electrical and fire alarm, and is a certified engineering technologist. He has been in the fire alarm industry for 30 years. His roles have included volunteer fire fighter, technician, owner, contractor, manufacturer’s representative, design engineer, responsible system engineer and consultant. Rick has been responsible for the planning, administration and management of fire safety programs for a Canada-wide portfolio of properties to ensure compliance with all fire safety regulations.As a contractor/technician he has performed tests and inspections, system repairs, system programming and verifications. As a consultant Rick has prepared numerous systems designs. Rick is an Approved CFAA Instructor, Registered CFAA Fire Alarm Technician, and has served as a CFAA National Board Director for more than 15 years.

Alan Cavers is the Engineering Manager for Certificate Services of Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada (ULC). He has been with ULC for 33 years in various capacities with the past 20 years in the fire alarm and burglary protection area. His group is the main resource for AHJ, Police Dept., Fire Dept., and Insurance Companies to source out and provide interpretations for field problems. Alan is an active member of the NBCC & NFCC. He is a CFAA Registered Technician and a CFAA National Director.

Gerry Bourne is a graduate of McMaster University, receiving his Bachelor Engineering and Management in 2004. He worked as a Design Engineer in the Automotive industry for 4 years and then moved into fire protection in 2008. In August 2010 Gerry became licensed as a Professional Engineer with the PEO. For the past 9 years Gerry has worked in the Fire Protection industry at Troy Life and Fire Safety Ltd. covering off the business development for their 30 offices coast to coast and now manages their Toronto and Barrie offices. Gerry is a member of the executive for the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Southern Ontario Chapter and serves on the National Board of Directors for the CFAA.

Douglas Best Over the last 26 years has worked both in the private sector and Public sector as a Fire Prevention Officer and a volunteer EMS attendant for seven years. Twelve and a half years at York University, responsible for checking, inspection and testing of fire and life safety systems throughout the campus. Scope of responsibilities also included liaison with internal and external agencies, and conducting student fire safety education for persons living on campus along with facility and staff. While at York University, completed the Train the Trainer Certificate courses and quality assurance program. The last fourteen years I have been with the City of Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service as an Inspection Officer an Acting Captain and in May 2014 promoted to Captain. Has become a certified Building Inspector and completed the Certified Ontario Fire Prevention Officers Certificate Program. WETT Certified for Solid Fuel Burning Appliances. NFAP 921 Certified for Fire and Explosion Investigations, also a certified Trainer Facilitator and NFPA 1035 Certified Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, recently completed the Service Excellence program for Management. A part time instructor at Humber College teaching CPR. He sat on the executive council for the Institution of Fire Engineers Ontario Branch as Chair of the Continued Professional Development for fire and life safety professionals. At present Mr. Best sits on the Board for the CFAA Ontario Chapter as professional representation for AHJ’s in Ontario.
