Women in Engineering at the MTC

WHO - The Initiative was launched on National Women in Engineering Day - 23rd

June 2015 and consists of most of the MTC’s female engineering staff, around 28

women including apprentices

WHAT -We aim to change the perception of engineering for women in order to

encourage more women/girls into the profession

WHEN – We meet monthly but take part in many STEM based activities such as

careers events and engineering days as well as hosting school events here at the

MTC

Women in Engineering at the MTC

WHERE – We typically take part in events across the midlands at schools, colleges and

universities but have also promoted our cause at our own schools across the country. We will

spread the message as wide as we can in collaboration with similar groups!

WHY - We are passionate about promoting our profession and by using female role models we

hope to have an effect on changing the industry. The UK has amongst the lowest ratio of female

: male engineers in Europe and a general shortage of engineers

HOW - We are giving some of our free time encouraging young women. The MTC is giving us

matched time to support the initiative

The Lloyds Bank

Advanced Manufacturing

Training Centre

A £36m Gov’t and Industry investment in the

future of manufacturing skills

Sponsored by Lloyds Bank

It links the development of world-class

manufacturing technology with the

development of people

The centre will deliver a range of innovation training elements:

Manufacturing engineering apprenticeships

Up-skilling of manufacturing engineers

Graduate development

Plus lecture theatre and conference facilities

The centre is being established to:

Redress the manufacturing high-level skills gaps inhibiting the HVM sector

Develop the skills that are needed for implementingthe technologies of the future

The centre was officially opened on 19th November 2015 by Secretary of State, Sajid Javid & Lord Blackwell, Chairman of Lloyds Bank.

The MTC Apprenticeship

The MTC runs an innovative

apprenticeship scheme

Apprentices with 2 years training

and proven competence are then

available to go work and for

external organisations

The MTC employs and develops

the apprentice for the first 2 years -

they receive training and

experience of MTC technology

This reduces the risk to business

(particularly SMEs) of taking on

and developing apprentices – The

MTC does the early “hard yards”
