I came across this saying by Maya Patel – “Small children are convinced that ponies deserve to see the

inside of the house.”

Now I finally know what is wrong with me, I never grew up. I am still convinced that all miniatures should

see the inside of our house. They should all climb the steps to the pool area, inspect the lapa and check

out Chris’s workroom with all his tools and machinery!! It is essential to find out where the dogfood is

stored, where the wild bird’s goodies are hidden and how to find it. This is what makes them so special,

you only need to show them once!

Vir die meeste van ons almal is hierdie daardie baie spesiale tyd van die jaar, kinders is terug van

universiteite af, skoolgaande kinders het vakansie en ons maak reg vir kuiergaste oor die Kerstyd of ons

begin pak vir ‘n Kersvakansie! Lekker. My gunsteling tydperk by ver.

Hierdie is ook die tyd wanneer ons verhoudings met mekaar en met andere effe krapperig raak, ons is

oorwerk, ons het soveel dinge om af te handel voor ons in hierdie lang verwagte rusperiode kan ingaan.

Daarom is dit ‘n goeie tyd om net te onthou - die belangrikste boodskap van alle tye is Liefde. Markus

12:31 God het hierdie Sy tweede gebod en net so belangrik soos die eerste gemaak: “Jy moet jou naaste

liefhe soos jouself.“

1 Peter 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Let’s make

this our aim this Christmas Season, let’s handle people with love, let love cover our sins as well as other’s

sins. This to me is such an integral part of the Christmas message, one that may never be ignored.

Remember the saying, “I can’t hear a word you are saying as your actions speak louder than words.” We

have to remember that it is not enough to tell people to do as you tell them but rather to lead by example.

With that I just want to remind everybody to enjoy yourself, enjoy your horses, and enjoy showing your

horses the inside of the house. Life is a choice, choose to enjoy it!!

A LETTER FROM WAYNE HIPSLEY Message to Members of the South African Miniature Horse Breeders Society

Dear SAMHBS Members and Guests It is with great regret that I am unable to attend your annual meeting celebrating your 30th anniversary as a breed and breed society. I was looking forward to re-connecting with many of you and sharing more information about the Miniature Horse. You and your fellow members are to be congratulated on accomplishing a major milestone, 30 years of development and maintaining the breeding of the Miniature Horse in South Africa. As an owner looks back without bias on these 30 years to see the evolution of the Miniature Horse breed, one can see change and improvement from the early roots to the formal acceptance of a breed and formation of a studbook. New owners and the public today must be reminded, there was no breed name known as a “Miniature Horse”, prior to the formation of the SAMHBS. In addition, all of this has been accomplished within the lifetime of many of today’s members and owners. Therefore, this becomes a true reason for a celebration of a common core and philosophy to develop a breed. And yes, it has not been easy during these 30 years, there have been struggles and they will continue, but in the end, the decisions about the future of the breed must be made based upon what is best for the breed, not an individual breeder. Each individual breeder must practice genetic selection based upon the qualities of breed type, conformation and movement as a breeding goal. The animal breeder’s philosophy of breeding “the best to the best to yield the best” remains a creed all animal breeders must maintain to sustain the breed into the future. However, owners need to be cautioned about yielding to the motivation of ‘animal multiplication’, believing sheer numbers of offspring is the answer to breeding quality Miniature Horses, wrong! Likewise, the breeders need to expand their scope and vision for participation in the international marketing of their Miniature Horses. Bringing to the market place a high quality Miniature Horse, that can compete successfully in any region of the world while providing reasonable economic return to the breeder. It is important to remember, the future of the Miniature Horse in South Africa remains within the decisions of today’s breeders. The improvement, preservation and the perpetuation of the breed must continue with a strategy developed mutually by the SAMHBS and its breeders. Remembering unlike 30, 50, 100 years ago, we live in a global community. We started the meeting with 20 breeders and 10 guests attending. A quorum consisted of 12 people so tha

t was easily attained.

A very short summary of the meeting :

The Hi-Lo system of judging will be brought back for all our National Championships.

The Board will look into the possibility of having all available show results recorded on Logix as soo

n as possible

Committee – a committee consisting of Ina van Aswegen, Marina vd Merwe, Paul Lubbinge and We

lma Joubert was appointed to look into various different aspect like fine tuning our breed standard

s, identifying the ideal miniature horse and the possibility of having show classes for two types of m

iniatures, training of miniature judges, etc. Two board members to be invited onto this committee.

There will be another auction in April 2015 in Bethlehem with Abrie Beukes driving this initiative on

ce again. A possibility of limiting the number of stallions on this auction to be examined.

Star stallion program to be incorporated in shows where possible. This is to be done separately fro

m the breeding classes and is to be a prestigious event with music where only stallions will be invit

ed to enter.

There was a general consensus that some of the more established breeders will be asked to act as

mentors to the new breeders joining the society.

The mentoring system that was in place to all the breeders by the board members to be implement

ed once again

Maryn Taljaard together with Brigitte vd Westhuizen was volunteered to look into the possibility o

f registering miniature horses as therapy animals.

The inclusion of show classes for handicapped children as well as children with special needs was a

pproved.

The new website of the SA miniature horses was unveiled.

Agrimega and Nampo was approved to again exhibit miniature horses

The weekend concluded in a function to commemorate the 30th year existence of the South African Mi

niature Horse with the handing out of awards as well as the 30th year Commemorative Journal

DNA

Both paternal and maternal DNA is now a requirement for the registration of a foal. This requirement has

been implemented over a period of years starting with the DNA of stallions being a requirement and later

introducing the DNA of mares. This gives certainty as to the genetic makeup of a foal and is important in

giving buyers of horses the comfort of knowing what they are procuring. More importantly it adds value to

our registration papers and ultimately to the value of our horses. If foal recordals are not accompanied by

DNA results from a recognised lab then the registration will become pending and will not be completed till

the required results are received.

There are three laboratories from which the results are recognised.

SAEF EN DIE AANSLUIT BY ONDERSKEIE KLUBS:

Na aanleiding van ŉ besluit van SASCOC 4 jaar gelede, verander die struktuur van perdesport weereens

vanaf ŉ dissipline gedrewe na ŉ mens gedrewe bestuur, waar die mense wat aan die sport deelneem, weer

‘n sê het. Perdesport as erkende sportsoort het 30 dae kans gekry om die strukture in orde te kry aangesien

hulle voorheen hulle eie strukture probeer maak het. Perdesport gaan voortaan deur die SAEF soos alle

ander sportsoorte bestuur word. Om te kan deelneem, moet perd en ruiter:

i. Aansluit by ŉ klub in hulle geografiese omgewing. Die klub is verantwoordelik vir die registrasies van

ruiters en perde by die SAEF;

ii. Die klub vorm deel van ŉ struktuur in ŉ streek (ŉ STREEK is ŉ gedeelte van ŉ provinsie);

iii. Die streek het sy eie bestuur, maar vorm ook deel van die groter provinsie met ŉ oorkoepelende

bestuur;

iv. Die nasionale spanne kan slegs vanuit deelname tussen provinsies saamgestel word.

v. Die voorsitter van elke provinsie se oorkoepelende bestuur is ŉ Raadslid by SAEF – daar is 9 Raadslede;

Die voormalige “assosiasies” (bv. SASA, SASJ, EQSA, ens.) is nou weer saamgegroepeer in ŉ tegniese

komitee wat aan die SAEF rapporteer om die verskillende dissiplines se reëls en regulasies vas te lê. Met

SASCOC se goedkeuring, kan ruiters dan internasionaal deelneem om Protea kleure te kry. Alles werk dus

presies dieselfde as in al die ander sportsoorte en is nie gefragmenteer in afsonderlike dissiplines nie.

THE 30TH YEAR COMMEMORATIVE JOURNAL

The SAMHBS have brought out a journal to commemorate the 30 year existence of the breed society. This

is a glossy magazine of 56 pages which contains adverts, and articles but mostly pages by breeders

promoting their studs and in some cases horses of importance. There are still copies available. If you have

request that for them to be progressed they must be submitted in writing to Sonja Wasserman at Studbook

due to administrative and cash flow pressures.
