The Oculus story

Oculus VR™ was founded in 2012, by Palmer Luckey, a self-described virtual reality enthusiast and hardware geek
In March 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus VR for $2 billion, and the two companies are now working toward releasing a version for everyday consumers
the Kickstarter was an enormous success, raising over $2.4 million in funding from project backers and supporters around the world
That same year, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund development of their first product, the Oculus Rift

The mask contains a large screen (the same display as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 phablet)
Each eye looks through a a different lens at a different part of the screen, which creates a stereoscopic 3D effect
The headset Also comes with two pairs of lenses and screws on the side to adjust the distance between the lenses and your eyes

In order to foster presence, the Rift also needs to track the way your head and body move
The DK2 comes with an external camera that tracks these infrared sensors on the head-mounted display
When these indicators move, the camera can see it and translate it to the game
The headset features a number of infrared sensors that detect tilt and orientation

What’s Next?

Cost remains a barrier to VR's adoption among advertisers • A three-minute VR video can cost more than $1 million to produce
Samsung recently released Gear VR, a virtual reality device developed in collaboration with Oculus VR
Oculus has stated that there will not be a DK3 but will instead release the consumer version next
A consumer-oriented version of the Rift is in development, with the following features:
• Improved head tracking • positional tracking • higher resolution • wireless operation • integrated 3D audio
