The release of the iPhone 5s included the addition of Apple’s M7 motion co-processor to collect, process and store motion data

• Even if the device is asleep

The Apple M8’s (iPhone 6/6+) functionality remains largely the same as last's year M7

Addition of a new sensor to the iPhone 6: a barometer, measuring air pressure

• when combined with the accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope, it allows the M8 to monitor elevation changes

privacy/security

22

Developers must provide a privacy policy for any app that uses the HealthKit framework

The Health app cannot make direct health diagnosis or recommendations

HealthKit data is stored locally on the user’s device

Any third-party device that measure health data must have FDA approval

• For example, a glucose-monitoring device that connects to a smartphone app needs to get approval just like any other glucose meter

Accessories

24

Apple is supporting some Bluetooth accessories natively in the Health app

• accessory manufacturers are able to skip the process of developing a companion app for their product and instead allow HealthKit to automatically connect to the device itself

HealthKit automatically connects with Bluetooth devices in range

There are fitness bands, blood pressure readers, scales, blood sugar readers, sleep trackers, and even a Bluetooth fork

APPS

26

Along with the inclusion of the Health app in its 8.0.2 update, Apple also created a new section of the App Store dedicated to health-related apps

behind the scenes

28

Once the data is shared, an app can register to be notified when that data changes

In many cases, an app can modify its metrics or advice based on the additional information from HealthKit

• For example, a training app could suggest a post workout snack based not only on the number of calories that the user has burned but also on the type and amount of food he or she has eaten so far that day

Developers have control over when their app is notified • For example, they could request that their app be notified whenever

the user takes his or her blood pressure, or be notified only when a measurement shows that the user’s blood pressure is too high

partnerships

30

Apple is partnering with the Mayo Clinic, to integrate with HealthKit so, for example, a patient's blood pressure reading is automatically compared with expectations and, if anything is amiss, their doctor is immediately alerted for follow up

Apple is also partnering with Epic Systems, a health care software company, which holds the medical records of almost half the patients in the U.S., so that patients at many major institutions can use Health to share their information with their doctors

Apple watch

An intelligent health and fitness companion

Apple Watch measures more than just the quantity of your movement, such as the number of steps you take. It measures the quality and frequency as well

Over time, Apple Watch can use what it learns about the way you move to suggest personalized daily fitness goals and encourage you to achieve them
