Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a worldwide organization committed to serving people, changing one life at a time.

Our diverse ministries attract a wide variety of participants and supporters, from single parents needing

help to dedicated volunteers seeking meaningful outlets for service to philanthropists and charitable

foundations wanting to contribute to their community.

The Salvation Army works every day to make life better for countless people in your community. Your gift

can enable us to serve nutritious meals to older adults, shelter homeless families, help men overcome

addictions, provide after-school tutoring and recreation, and send inner-city children to summer camp.

In the event of a local or national disaster, The Salvation Army sends pre-trained, pre-approved volunteers

to the disaster site for a two-week deployment, which includes 12 full working days and approximately 2

travel days.

Operational needs normally include, but are not limited to:

• Soup Kitchen

• Customer Service

• Family Store

• Finance

• Administration – data entry and communications

Sexual Assault Resource Agency

The mission of the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) is to eliminate sexual violence and its impact by

providing education, advocacy, and support to men, women, and childern.

Our vision is a community free from sexual violence.

There are opportunities to help SARA:

• Hotline advocate

• Outreach volunteer

• Office volunteer

• Bring us to your workplace or civic group to teach bystander intervention skills

• Help us convince school administrators to let us conduct lessons and train teachers in your local

schools

StreamWatch

StreamWatch is the Rivanna Watershed’s local stream monitoring organization. We are a 501(c) 3 non-

profit. StreamWatch engages a broad spectrum of the community to develop data and information

credible to all. We are advised by a partnership composed of local governments, resource management

agencies, and non-governmental organizations. We engage citizens to help us collect data, we work with

science experts to help us analyze our data and convert it to understandable information, and we present

our findings to planners, managers, elected decision-makers, and, via the media, the general public.

Through this inclusive and comprehensive involvement, we help facilitate community consensus on the

status of our streams and rivers. We believe that when diverse sectors of the community share

fundamental agreement on the condition of the resource, the chances of sound, collaborative

management are enhanced.

Stream monitoring is a key component of successful stewardship of the watershed because responsive

management requires the environmental feedback – the data – that monitor supplies. Government

agencies do not have sufficient resources to monitor as comprehensively as needed, and “official”

resource managers are increasingly turning to volunteer monitors to help fill data gaps.

StreamWatch is fortunate to have a strong team of dedicated volunteers to help monitor and assess the

health of the Rivanna watershed streams. Collectively, our volunteers donate more than 1200 hours of

their time each year! These citizen scientists have been instrumental in StreamWatch’s water quality

monitoring since 2003.

Many of our volunteers monitor benthic macroinvertebrates, the bugs found on the bottom of streams.

Volunteers also help with bacteria monitoring, habitat surveys, other stream projects, office work,

outreach, and more.

Here are some ways to volunteer:

• Benthic Macroinvertebrate Monitors

• Bacteria Monitors

• General Office

• Public Outreach Coordinator

• Newsletter Editor & Email Communications

• Graphic Design & Computer support

variety of special events. We also maintain a research library and a Center for Historic Plants. Our staff

includes 130 volunteers who serve in a variety of departments across the Foundation, both with the

visiting public and also in our offices “behind-the-scenes.”

We are seeking friendly, energetic, and engaged volunteers to help us serve our guests in the Visitor

Center and around the mountaintop. Volunteers are needed to:

• Greet visitors

Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

The VIPS Program mission is to provide support and resources for agencies interested in developing or

enhancing a volunteer program and for citizens who wish to volunteer their time and skills with a

community law enforcement agency.

The program’s ultimate goal is to enhance the capacity of state and local law enforcement to utilize

volunteers. The VIPS staff shares information and resources with law enforcement agencies that want to

expand their programs, increase the use of volunteers in existing programs, help citizens learn about and

become involved in VIPS program.

President George W. Bush created USA Freedom Corps (USAFC) to build on the countless acts of service,

sacrifice, and generosity that followed September 11. When he announced USAFC in his 2002 State of the

Union address, he called on all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves. Citizen Corps was

created to help coordinate volunteer activities to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared

to respond to any emergency situation. It provides opportunities for people to participate in a range of

measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from threats of crime,

terrorism, and disasters of all kinds. Citizen Corps partner programs build on the successful efforts in place

in many communities around the country to prevent crime and respond to emergencies.

Volunteer training information is available from the Sheriff’s Office in Fluvanna.

The Volunteer Fluvanna! fair may be just right for you.

Have you ever wished you could give some time to a worthy cause?

Have you wanted to hook up with a group doing work you believe in but didn’t know where to start?

The goal of the fair is to match groups in need of volunteer help with Fluvanna citizens eager to donate

some time to a cause they care about.

“We’re hoping people will see the organizations and say, hey, I might want to join them,” said John Down,

FLDP class member. He and his classmates are expecting up to 50 non-profits and volunteer organizations

at the fair.

Some non-profits will have door prizes, said Jackie Bland, another FLDP class member, and the high school

band boosters will have food for sale.

“Many folks don’t realize how meaningful it is to these non-profits [to have] a volunteer who can help –

even if it is for as little as an hour a week,” Bland said. “And there are all sorts of roles to fill that match a

volunteer’s talents.”

The Fluvanna Leadership Development Program is a six-month course dedicated to teaching Fluvanna

residents about the inner workings of their county. Usually FLDP students choose their own final project,

but this year the steering committee decided class members would all work together to put on this fair.

“Over the past few years we saw a recurring theme of comments that suggested that…the projects were

not really fulfilling a true need,” said Rudy Garcia, member of FLDP’s executive committee. “The steering

committee brainstormed ways to provide more value to the class in the project phase while still meeting

our core requirement for the projects – allowing the groups to work together with relatively unknown

partners, replicating what happens on a county board or commission.”

Fluvanna Partnership for the Aging (PFA) is one of the non-profits participating in the fair, and it needs

help. “The purpose of PFA is to advocate for and raise awareness of the needs of 55-plus citizens and their

caregivers and to develop partners and community volunteers to work together to make Fluvanna County

the best place to age,” said Deborrah Foreman, PFA chair.

The Columbia district seat on the PFA is open, said Foreman. She hopes the fair will spark interest to “raise

awareness about PFA and the many volunteer opportunities to serve aging citizens in the county.”

Adele Schaefer of the Fluvanna Arts Council hopes that the fair will help her connect with Fluvannians

interested in the arts. “We need volunteers for helping with the shows, marketing, fundraising, and

whatever is needed to help keep the Arts Council continuing to provide entertainment for the

community,” she said. “I hope I find those volunteers at the fair!”

Garcia thinks the fair has the potential to do good in the county. “We hope that we will succeed in

matching community members who have a desire to serve with organizations that they are passionate

about,” he said. “We hope that our non-profits will have a chance to tell their story to a new audience and

that the outcome will be more community engagement in the non-profits serving the county.”

“I see the fair as a way to come out of the cold dark winter and celebrate Fluvanna,” said Stephanie Davis,

FLDP class member. “Even the smallest effort…makes a difference. Take pride in your community – find

out who needs your help and who is ready to help you.”
