The work of the Scottish architect, designer and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh is today celebrated internationally.

Mackintosh was one of the most sophisticated exponents of the theory of the room as a work of art, and created distinctive furniture of great formal elegance.

In Glasgow, you will see the finest examples of his buildings and interiors and examples of his creative collaborations with his wife, the accomplished artist and designer Margaret Macdonald.

Welcome to the Sixth Mackintosh FestivalWelcome to the sixth Mackintosh Festival. Join us as we celebrate the life and genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh through a series of events taking place across the month of October. This year’s programme features over 40 events, many of which are free. We are delighted to have Kelvin Hall as a new partner venue in the festival programme for the first time - they will have activities and workshops for all ages.

The Glasgow Art Club will be taking tours of the building and there’s a chance to see their Autumn art exhibition, meet the archivist and a lecture on Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh. There’s plenty for all the family and during the October schools week: Glasgow Museum Resource Centre, Kelvingrove Museum and Scotland Street School Museum have a range of FREE family workshops which are suitable for all ages and abilities. The Glasgow School of Art will host their very popular walking tours and Mackintosh at the GSA tours, a family workshop and you can enjoy a Whisky Mack cocktail in the Vic Bar throughout the month. Festival goers can tour The Mackintosh House at The Hunterian and see the re-assemblage of Charles and Margaret’s interiors from their Glasgow home.

House for an Art Lover have a packed month of events including: a murder mystery dinner, workshops, tours, classes and lots of activity for young people including The Spook School and storytelling. The Lighthouse have a series of shows by Sonica and Cryptic called Chozumaki, tours of the building, the Mackintosh Centre and an exhibition celebrating the relationship of Charles and Margaret called Illuminating Letters.

In Helensburgh, you can tour The Hill House, Mackintosh’s masterpiece and The Mackintosh Club on Sinclair Street has an exhibition of Japanese textile crafts, including kimonos and embroidery. Mackintosh Queen’s Cross have a full range of events including their recently launched walking tours, an exhibition of Mackintosh chairs, the chance to hear artist Avril Paton talk about her art and the very popular Lids Open Day - the chance for members of the public to play their Steinway grand piano. Following on from last year’s very successful The Big Rose, Elisabeth Vigiue Culshaw is back with her stencils to create The Big Banner Project – a recreation of a banner designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Willow Tea Rooms in 1904. Elisabeth invites the public along to free and paid-for workshops - at various Glasgow Mackintosh venues - to help her recreate the banner which will then hang in The Lighthouse throughout the festival. We are delighted to be working with our festival partners: Glasgow Women’s Library who will host their Glasgow Girls of Garnethill walk; Glasgow Restaurant Association who are running their The Big Mack Dinearound; St Enoch Centre has an exhibition of art work by secondary school pupils, part of an annual Glasgow Mackintosh competition called Mackintosh the Innovator. Our annual photography competition with Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival will run again and the winners will appear online throughout the festival.

We hope you enjoy this year’s festival! Glasgow Mackintosh

Commissioned by local businessman, Wenham Bassett-Lowke, it is the only CRM designed house in England. One hour from Birmingham and London with easy train and air links to Glasgow, it is one of Northamptonshire’s hidden gems.

We are delighted to be holding our annual photography competition with Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival. We want you to photograph the buildings you visit, the tours you go on and the events you take part in during Doors Open Day and share on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
