Improving Lives 1 Million People at a Time, a Career in Industry The goals of this presentation are to discuss the engineer’s role in industry and how the
skills and talents developed in a doctoral or research program translate into an industrial
career. The presentation will focus on the product development process, the development
team, and stakeholders involved in the commercialization of medical devices. Concepts of
value and engineering economics will be discussed along with regulatory science, quality
engineering, and clinical research organizations. Finally, industrial recruitment of
technical talent and career pathways will be reviewed. After this presentation, attendees
should recognize potential roles for academic researchers within industry and how
industry views the roles and responsibilities of those with research and academic
