President Richard Kaneko’s Message:
Wow! The first year of my term is fast approaching! Nominations are upon us and whom we
think should be in the different positions is another item to ponder. We must take these
nominations seriously and think of the best person for the job. We need to look at the
positions and their descriptions. We need to look at what tasks, roles, and responsibilities each
elected official has to fulfill.
With new officers, we have a clean slate to start with. We need to be operating more
efficiently. In order to do this, we need to become more aware of what we are supposed to be
doing in the day to day running of our club. We need to revisit our by-laws and the job
descriptions of the positions we hold within the club. If need be, we should alter, amend, or
totally change those items that are no longer applicable. We need to include things that are.
The Koko Head Lions’ Club Monthly Newsletter 1/29/2010
page 3 of 11 pages
Our By Laws should be a living document, reflective of what we are doing in and with our club.
Before and above all else, however, we need to take action on the things we say we are going
to do, not just talk. We need to think of and find ways to retain the members we have and
create an atmosphere that would make those who do not participate fully in the present
activities of the club want to. All we need is a few, even as few as three or four, more active
members to make our tasks easier to bear. I challenge all of you to think of things that you
would fine enjoyable to do during meetings or at functions. As Lion Phil says, we need to go to
Maple Garden once in a while so he can bring his home brew to share. Talk to me,
communicate with those you feel comfortable with. Let us all work to make our club GREAT!
Vote to switch to one bulletin per month
This topic was not discussed at the last meeting but it was in the last bulletin.
Any who may have had comments concerning it should have voiced their concerns earlier.
The comments concerning it are reprinted for your convenience.
1. The cost of postage for two bulletins is constantly going up.
2. The amount of NEW information in the second bulletin does not often justify it.
We often do not have enough activities to report on to justify two issues.
3. The amount of information on the title page and the calendars is, for the most part, a
repetition of the first bulletin. We pay for these pieces of information twice a month.
4. We only have one president’s message in the first issue, none in the second.
5. The turn around time between bulletins leaves no time to get all of the information needed
to put out a quality issue.
6. I would rather pay postage on ONE ten page report rather than two of them.
Discussion: MERLO Team and others
Discussion of a request of a member(s) from the MERLO team and others to give us a
presentation about retention and recruitment of new members. We did not get to this at the
general meeting. I have checked with Zone Chair and Secretary of Kaimuki Lions, Karen
Tsukiyama, and she is agreeable to having it at Crane Lodge.
Discussion: Discussion of attendance at PTSA meetings
Each school’s Parent Teacher Student Association meets to discuss issues pertinent to the
school. This is a GREAT time for us to interact with our schools to find out first hand what they
are doing, what they are having problems with and how we can assist. It makes us more visible
in the community and gives us opportunities for recruitment. It would also be a show of
support if Koko Head joined each of these associations as members. Fee is usually $10.
Meeting times are as follows:
Aina Haina School – 1st Tuesday of the Month.
Niu Valley Middle School – 1st Thursday of the Month.
Wilson School – 2nd Thursday of the month.
Zone Project: D50 Lions in Sight Eyeglass Collection
Koko Head, Kaimuki, and Diamond Head combined manpower and
skills to put on our part of the first District wide glasses collection.
Koko Head’s Lion Selvin Chin Chance took pictures from the
literature that was given to all clubs and pictures concerning the
cleaning and dissemination of eyeglasses from our archives to put
together a first class display. This picture of the collection box with a

hand (mine) inserting a pair of glasses into the box became our
focal picture. Others are below.
Kaimuki set up a demonstration of waterless
eyeglass cleaning and the preparation of
eyeglasses for shipment. The members of all
three clubs participated in the cleaning
demonstration. Lion Ted Aratani’s daughter,
a member of one of the churches in Kaimuki,
asked if we could donate our eyeglasses to
her church. They will be leaving on a mission
to American Samoa to distribute the
eyeglasses. The donation was 800+.
We had GREAT participation from the
three clubs, Diamond Head, Koko Head,
and Kaimuki. (Hawaii Kai, our other zone
club member, did their activities at the
malls and shopping centers in Hawaii Kai.)
We enjoyed the camaraderie of our fellow
zone members whom we do not get to see
often enough. If there was a down side, it
was the lack of advertising that we had
expected to have come from the District.
Even without the publicity, we collected
45 pairs! Next year, we will do better.

Club Project: Niu Valley Middle School Career Day
We participated in Niu Valley Middle School’s Career
Day on January 27th. Selvin put together a
presentation for Stan Torricer concerning
welding. Stan Torricer was a welder for 50 years
and he wowed the students in grades 6 through 8
with underwater exploits and down-home things
to make better students of them all.
Although Selvin could not make the presentation,
Stan did the words and I shuffled the overhead.
We made a great team!

Club Project: Request for Parking:
We have a request for parking at the Farrington/Kaimuki/Kalani Complex Middle School
Science Fair. See General Meeting Notes for details and map of this project.
D50 Project: Safe Sidewalk repairs:
The Safe Sidewalk project is starting up again. We will meet shortly before 8:00 am on
Kanekapolei Street near Food Pantry and Perry’s Smorgy Restaurant off Kuhio Avenue. Street
parking will be on Kanekapolei Street. This is a new parking site near Perry’s Smorgy. Parking in
this area will be restricted to the general public to reserve spaces for us. Patch work will be
performed on Nahua, Walina, Kanekapolei, and portions of Kukio and Ala Wai Boulevard. Wear
clothes for mixing and spreading concrete. Shoes are required by OSHA. So are safety goggles
or glasses. For those who still have their fluorescent green shirts, please wear them. Hats are
needed.
Slate of Officers for 201 – 2011
The slate of officers listed is both preliminary and temporary. Others may want to nominate
other members who have expressed an interest in the various positions. Some on the list may
be having second thoughts about their being on the slate. What ever the reason, we all have

until March 3rd, nomination night, to make our final decisions before April 7th, election night.
