The alcohol is key.Last year when the good folks here at The Daily

Nonpareil asked me to do the Diva Night fashionshow (AKA drag show), I initially jumped at thechance.

Then I got nervous.Could I go through with it? What would be my

talent? Do my thighs look big in this outfit?I arrived at the Mid-America Center with trepi-

dation, but then I saw the bar. Free booze? Well, yeah, how ‘bout a little something to help loosenme up.

I went out there, strutted as best a tall, awk-ward man can in a blouse and tight pants and jug-gled my heart out during the talent portion. Funtimes.

This year a lineup of men from Council Bluffswill entertain the crowds with a catwalk, speechand talent portion, with audience reaction and atrio of judges – previous contestants Mike’l Severeof radio station 1620 the zone, PottawattamieCounty Attorney Matt Wilber and local attorneyChad Primmer – will determine the winner.Another former contestant, Crash Davis, willemcee the event.

I’m here to introduce you to the contestants forthis year’s event. My No. 1 question? “Have youever cross-dressed before?” The results were sur-prising.

Heartland Properties Realtor Jay Kathol isexcited to compete.

“I’m ready to show off my sweet tight skirt andblouse body,” he said.

The homeseller’s “talent” is singing – he coppedto not carrying a tune well – with him lip-synchingto a song to be chosen later. He’ll compete for Habi-tat for Humanity, which “does a lot of good thingsin the community.”

“Being in real estate, it lines up, just makessense,” he said.

And about past dress-wearing?“Oddly enough I did for another charity event.

The Association of Realtors had an event where Iended up in a dress,” he said. “This is not my firstcross-dressing experience.”

Buffy of restaurant Dixie Quicks sees the con-test as a way to be creative, a chance to be differ-ent.

“And have some fun,” he said. “I’ve produceddrag shows in the past, I know how well they goover with crowds. It’s not the ‘same ‘ol thing.’”

A quality singer, he’ll croon for the masses atDiva Night, though he’s unsure which song justyet. He’ll compete for the Rainbow OutreachResource Center, a LGBT organization based inOmaha.

“I hope I’m able to let people know the center isthere for anyone,” he said.

He too has cross-dressed before, for a “turn-about show” (girls wear guys clothes, guys weargirls clothes) in a society he’s a member of.

Taking my place as Nonpareil newsroom repre-sentative is reporter Kirby Kaufman. He’s compet-ing for Support Our Local Animal Shelter(SOLAS). His talent will be a comedy routine.

“Animals are a remedy for loneliness. They takecare of you, and in return, need your care. It’s partof being a family – giving them a home. They love

you unconditionally, and it’s your responsibility asan owner to do the same,” Kaufman said.

He’s never worn women’s clothing before, but, “Iwas in theater all through high school. I used towear eyeliner.” So there’s that.

And he had a message to the competition:“The other Divas won’t be able to keep up with

this heat.”Geoff Hubbard with Council Bluffs Parks and

Recreation was on a competition jump-rope teamin middle and high school while growing up. He’llstir up the echoes on Diva Night with a vintageperformance, set to the tune of “Sexy and I KnowIt” by LMFAO.

“I’m supposed to jump rope for three to fiveminutes, hope I can last that long,” he said with alaugh. “My youthful endurance isn’t there any-more.”

Hubbard will compete for TeamMates, a men-toring program founded in part by formerNebraska Cornhusker head coach Tom Osborne. He once cross-dressed for the polar plunge in SiouxCity.

“About 20 guys and I dressed as Miss Americacandidates and jumped in the water,” he said. “It’samazing what you’ll do for charity.”

Other contestants will be Jim Lovely, co-ownerof Peak Fitness in Council Bluffs, competing forChildren’s Square; Dr. Ty Dworak of Bluffs FamilyChiropractic competing for the Loess Hills chapterof the American Red Cross; Mills County AttorneyEric Hansen competing for the Phoenix House;and Bob Wahl, owner of Wahl Optical, competingfor Promise 4 Paws Dog Rescue in Council Bluffs.

Broad shoulders, height and ahefty bust might spell doom forDiva Night contestants. Espe-cially being that they’re mendonning formal wear.

“That’s the most difficultthing about fitting a man in adress,” said Kay Hilgenkamp, senior director of retail for Good-will stores in eastern Nebraskaand southwest Iowa.

Goodwill saved the day for oursultry models. The nonprofitdonated bodices and skirtsgalore for the contest’s sevenmale participants.

Event organizers visited theGoodwill in Council Bluffs, 1850Madison Ave., and Reserve, 13th

and Howard streets, Omaha, which features vintage and mod-ern apparel.

Hilgenkamp said men don’tpull off formal dresses becausemany are sleeveless.

“It’s too much upper bodyexposed,” she said.

So a different style is needed.Reserve offers higher end and

formal items compared to otherGoodwill stores. The store alsooffers a selection of jewelry, vin-tage clothing and other acces-sories. People are drawn toReserve for a budget alternate toprom, homecoming and weddingdresses.

“There’re key pieces that letyour style stand apart,”Hilgenkamp said. “By shopping

at Goodwill, you create your ownstyle.”

Amidst the sparking blue andbridesmaid dresses, organizersfound a brown gown.

“It’s unique as it can be,”Hilgenkamp said of the dress.

Hilgenkamp said Goodwill isa great starting place to build anew wardrobe. The stores are“seasonless.” Inventory items areon the sales floor whether rain orsnow.

“You start from one treasureand you build from it,” she said.“The sky’s the limit.”

Goodwill stores aim to pro-vide affordable, good-lookingattire while helping out the com-munity. It all goes back to thenonprofit’s mission to change

lives and strengthen communi-ties through education, trainingand work.

Less is more as this season’sfall makeup takes a spin towardindividualism and neutral col-ors.

“It’s not a particular color orstyle,” said Margaret Freemanof Council Bluffs, an indepen-dent beauty consultant for MaryKay. “You can do what youwant.”

Freeman said a better alter-native to caking it on is to usesubtle colors such as brownsand greens, which excel at show-casing natural beauty. Andwhen people don’t notice themakeup, you’re doing it right.

“There’s such a wide varietyof makeup,” Freedman said.“What lasts is the classic style.”

Compliment, not contrast. It’s the goal for accentuatingbeauty with makeup. Brightenup either the lips or eyes – not

both – with neutral colors.“Either your eyes are really

flashy, or it’s your lips,” she said.“You go one way or the other.”

Neutral colors can also com-pliment almost any outfit. Grayis the new black this year, butit’s best to find a neutral color tomatch your skin tone.

As for skin cream and mois-

turizers, they should matchskin, cheek and eye tones.

Freeman said there are twoprimary makeup styles – workenvironment and nightlife. Gen-erally, the two don’t mix, butwhen neutral colors are used, the two become interchange-able. When hitting the barscene, it’s better to use neutral

colors to stand out in shadowyareas.

“When you glam up at night, you just don’t see color,” Freed-man said.

In addition to makeup,Freedman suggested jewelry toadd finesse to any outfit.

Keep the adornments andbaubles in the armoire becausethis season is about all thingssloppy. Take any jewelry andtoss it together.

“It’s not about the pearl neck-lace anymore,” Freeman said.“It’s really fun now.”

“We feel it’s important to beinvolved in this kind of thing,”said owner Scott McMullen.

Without an admission fee, last year’s event “blossomed intoa very big event,” he said.

Also like last year, McMullenwill showcase cars at the event. There will be three 2013 Fordmodels at Diva Night that arepredicted to be hot sellers, andthey’re especially appealing towomen who seek fuel efficiencyand loads of safety features, hesaid. Focus is one of Ford’s top-sell-ing brands and while it under-went a major redesign last year,2013 brings a high-performancemodel as one of its choices.

Jean shopping just became less stress-ful.

Kara Chapman, an independent fash-ion consultant for Vault Denim, will have120 pairs of authentic designer jeans forsale at Diva Night ranging from sizeszero to 22.

The 23-year-old Council Bluffs womanlearned of the Utah-based companywhen she attended a Vault Denim homeparty.

Vault Denim sells jeans for up to 50percent less than retail pricing. The com-pany also provides women with theopportunity to earn extra money sellingjeans.

“They’re cheaper than you can getthem in high end stores,” Chapman said.“They’re really happy with their decision.”

In August 2012, Chapman became anindependent fashion consultant for VaultDenim because hours were flexible.

Designer jeans from Vault Denimrange from $48 to $92. A changing roomwill be available at Diva Night for cus-tomers to try on jeans.

Vault Denim doesn’t charge its consul-tants for product, but instead provides theinventory. The company purchases jeansin bulk after the current fashion seasonends. Customers receive the products dur-ing home parties instead of placing anorder and waiting for it to be shipped.

Home parties are becoming increas-ingly popular, Chapman said, because of agrowing client base.

“When we do home parties it’s a per-sonal shopping experience,” she said.

Among popular items are jeans withrhinestones also called “bling jeans.” Thecompany also offers more traditional vari-eties as well as lace and leopard prints.

Getting the hair cut you wantis not always as easy as closingyour eyes and visualizing it. Ifyou’ve ever left the salon lookingdifferently than you planned, you know how frustrating abotched cut or dye job can be.

“Style satisfaction actuallystarts long before your stylistpicks up the scissors,” saysMatrix Global Artist FrancoDella Grazia of New York’s Cut-ler Salon. “Communicationbetween you and your stylistshould start the moment youwalk through the salon door.”

Here are some indispensabletips for anyone seeking to getthe most out of that next trip tothe salon:

■ Expect a full and free con-sultation. A thorough consulta-tion is the best way for a stylistto learn about you and yourhair. Most reputable salons willoffer free consultations to newclients. It should last about 10minutes – time well spent if youconsider how long it takes a badcut to grow out!

■ Don’t keep secrets! Themore you share with your styl-ist, the more information yourstylist will have to create a lookand styling plan that’s right foryou. So offer full disclosureabout the botched color job thatyou covered up at home, or thecowlick that springs to life inhumidity! Share the good, andeven more importantly, the badso can set goals to be successfultogether.

■ Be yourself. If you’re visit-ing a salon for the first time, make an effort to wear the outfitthat best sums up your flavor. This will help your stylist createa look that harmonizes withyour taste and style.

■ Describe your daily rou-tine. Do you shampoo daily? Areyou willing to blow dry yourhair, or are you always runninglate for work or school? Do youexperiment with different looksand products, or do you prefer asingle style that goes from deskto dinner party? A recount ofyour routine helps your hair-dresser design a look you canduplicate at home.

■ Know what should stayand what has to go. “I love whena client knows what she likesabout her hair and what shewants to change,” says Matrix

Artistic Director Patrick McIvor.“Don’t worry about communicat-ing in stylist-speak. Just keep itsimple.”

Do you like your length, yourbangs, or the fact that it takestwo minutes to do your hair inthe morning? Do you dislikeyour frizz? Is it too red? Too fine?

Hairdressers claim it’s actu-ally more helpful to understandwhat a client doesn’t like, sothat they can avoid going downthat road. Bring photos of bothdos and don’ts, and be preparedto talk about them.

More helpful tips on commu-nicating with your stylist can befound at Matrix.com.

Remember, time heals allhair cut blunders. But if youdon’t feel like waiting, you cantake proactive steps to get itright the first time.

It’s a common misconception among women that in order to look yourbest, you need to devote ample time in front of the mirror each morning. However, looking your best from head-to-toe is much simpler than it sounds.Polly Blitzer, founder and editor in chief of BeautyBlitz.com, has teamed upwith Crest 3D White to offer a few beauty shortcuts to help you create a vir-tually flawless look!

Instant Beauty Pick-Me-Up During the Work WeekStill recovering from the busy holiday season filled with travel and cele-

brations? With just a few quick fixes in the morning, you can easily appearmore rejuvenated and refreshed. All it takes is a pop of color on your face –whether it is on your eyes, cheeks or lips – to give your overall beauty look acomplete boost. My personal secret beauty weapon for a more energized lookis a bright lip color, particularly cherry red or fuchsia.

Put Your Best Face Forward With a Bright SmileTransforming your smile to one that is brighter and dazzling can literally

make heads turn, and a simple way to update your beauty look is to whitenyour teeth. From the No. 1 whitening brand recognized by top beauty maga-zine editors, Crest 3D White is a staple in my beauty routine. I recommendusing Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips along with Crest 3DWhite Vivid Toothpaste and other products in the 3D White collection (Crest3D White MultiCare Whitening Rinse and Oral-B Pulsar 3D WhiteAdvanced Vivid Toothbrush), to start to see noticeably whiter teeth after justone day!

Create An Effortless Smokey Eye to Transition From Day toEvening

When running from the office to cocktails with friends, we don’t alwayshave the time to seamlessly transition to an evening look with a fullmakeover. However, just a few swipes of eyeliner, shadow and mascara canhelp you achieve a show-stopping smokey eye in little to no time at all! To getthis look in a hurry, rim your lash line with black or gray eyeliner. Then dustbrown or gray shadow all over your lid and crease, making sure to blend thecolor up and outward. Lastly, to complete your hassle-free dramatic eye look, apply two coats of black volumizing mascara and you’re out the door!

And Of Course, Don’t Forget to Stay Hydrated! The best tip I have for always looking your absolute best? Stay hydrated

by drinking at least eight glasses of water each day. This can sometimes bechallenging when you’re on the go and find yourself reaching for a hot cup ofjava to keep pushing through the day. To help increase the amount of wateryou’re drinking, I recommend squeezing fresh lemon into the glass for arefreshing taste.

For more information on these tips, visit 3DWhite.com or beautyblitz.com.

Popularity ofeyebrow threading

Visit any spa or salon – or even take a walk through the mall – andthere is a good chance you will come across practitioners of eyebrowthreading. The popularity of threading has grown so quickly thatmany people may wonder about its benefits.

Threading must be done by an experienced professional. A cottonthread is twisted around the hairs set to be removed and then tugged.Hairs are pulled out at the follicle level. Because entire rows of hairscan be removed at the same time, it is easier to get straight, more dis-tinctive lines than with tweezing.

When handled by an experienced stylist, eyebrow threading isessentially painless and less damaging to the skin than waxing, whichtends to pull at the delicate area around the eye. Waxes may causeskin irritation or even burn if improperly applied.

Threading removes these risks and is done more slowly to achieveprecise results. Because threading targets only a few hairs at a time,it’s less likely to cause unsightly red patches of irritated skin, whichcan happen after waxing. Threading is also hygienic because nothingbut clean strands of the cotton come in contact with the face. Thosewith sensitive or aging skin find threading is less likely than waxingto cause wrinkles or skin pulling.

Women often find that threading is also effective at removing strayhairs on the chin and upper lip also. It is very reasonably priced.Salons or free-standing threading kiosks charge roughly $6 for a stan-dard session.

Women are increasingly turning to threading as their method of eyebrow shaping.

The rising cost of consumerproducts or services has leftmany budget-conscious peopleat a loss as how to enjoy them-selves, especially when planninga party. But fun does not need tobe sacrificed in the name of fru-gality. Just recreate some ofyour favorite activities at homefor a fraction of the cost of goingout.

Analysts at Goldman Sachsestimate that the global skincare beauty industry is worth$24 billion, while the make-upindustry is worth $18 billion.Haircare products generate $38billion annually, and the $15 bil-lion perfume industry is grow-ing as much as 7 percent eachyear.

Many people routinelyengage in beauty and personalgrooming procedures, includingmanicures, pedicures, massagesand facials. As a result, the con-cept of hosting spa parties hasbecome more commonplace. Butinstead of venturing out toexpensive salons and day spas, agrowing number of people areattempting to hold the party athome in an attempt to savemoney. These pampering partieshave become quite the rage withboth adults and young girls whowant to experience the sameamenities as their mothers.

Most homes can be trans-formed into relaxing oaseswhere guests are treated tomany different self-indulgentprocedures. Here’s how to holdyour own spa party at home.

■ Set the tone of the party byhaving pre-soaked andmicrowaved face towels setaside in a bowl to hand out toarriving guests. Keep the towelswarm by covering the bowl inplastic wrap. Add a few drops oflavender oil when heating sothat the towels smell fresh andinvoke feelings of relaxation.

■ Have a set amount of inex-pensive flip-flops set up forguests to wear. Use a permanentmarker to personalize the shoeswith guests’ names so that thesandals do not get mixed upwith someone else’s. You mayalso want to purchase terrycloth robes or wraps for theguests or request on the invita-tion that guests bring their own.

■ Establish the mood of theevent by investing in some NewAge or relaxing instrumentalclassical music. Set up your mp3

player in an inconspicuous areaof the room so that the musicbecomes part of the backgroundand does not overwhelm guests.

Candles are often an integralpart of setting a relaxing scene.Keep lights dim and placescented candles in a sandal-

wood, lavender or vanilla aromaaround the space. This willentice the senses of vision andsmell.

■ There are a few differentoptions regarding who will per-form the spa services on guests. If the number of people attend-ing is small, you may want to dothem yourself. Otherwise youcan pair up guests to do them onone another, which is possiblefor manicures and pedicures.Think about setting up differentspa stations around the room soguests can take turns treatingthemselves. Still, you can findout how much it would cost tohire one or two professionals tocome into your home and per-form spa services. This may bemore comfortable if the partyinvolves massages or facials.Check with a local cosmetologyschool to find out if studentswould be willing to serviceguests at your party. This may

be a more affordable option.■ Create calming center-

pieces of natural elements. Thiscould simply be a small con-tainer with some catnip growingor a vase with water and reflec-tive beads. Don’t choose itemsthat are too loud. You want theatmosphere to be quiet andcalming.

■ Provide light and refresh-ing snacks and beverages. Lookto fruit skewers or small fingersandwiches. Choose non-alco-holic drinks like punches orsparkling waters, which won’tdehydrate. Bite-size items workwell so guests won’t be ham-pered by dishes or cutlery.

■ Provide guests with littletake-away bags full of samplesof the items that were used atthe party. This way they cantake home not only memories ofa relaxing event, but continuethe pampering at home.

Winter brings with it manythings, including snowy days, chilly nights and the propensityfor irritating beauty issues. Colddry air outside and warm dry airinside can result in moisture lossfrom both the hair and skin. Notonly can this be uncomfortable, but it can be unsightly as well. There are also other beautyissues that come up, like whichproducts to use this time of year.

Revamping a health andbeauty regimen for winter com-fort takes just a little effort. Hereare 11 tips that will benefit youand your appearance all seasonlong.

1. Adding moisture to yourenvironment is one of the singlebest ways to combat winter skinand hair issues. This means pur-chasing a humidifier that willput moisture to the air. Evenboiling some water on the stoveand allowing the steam to seepinto the air can alleviate a dryhome.

2. Dry skin can feel tight anditchy. It may or may not flake offas well. Dry skin that is consis-tently scratched could becomeirritated or even infected if bac-teria gets into the skin. Moistur-izers applied all over the bodycan help the skin retain mois-ture and alleviate the itchiness.Creams with menthol could pro-vide a cooling effect that alsotames itchiness. But watch outfor products that also containalcohol. The alcohol might seemcooling at first, but the alcoholcould eventually dry out the skinwhen it evaporates.

3. Experiment with yourhome’s thermostat to find anindoor temperature that is morecomfortable for your dry skinconditions.

4. Very hot showers maychase away the chill from out-doors, but they can strip the skinand hair of moisture as well. Tryshowering in lukewarm waterinstead, and slather on a mois-turizing body lotion right after-ward.

5. Relying on an electric hairdryer to dry your hair afterwashing can compound dry, frizzy or unruly hair. It may beunwise to step outdoors on a coldday with wet hair, so leave ampletime in your schedule to showerand allow hair to air dry when-ever possible.

6. Licking dry lips just exacer-bates the situation. Instead, usea moisturizing lip balm spar-ingly. Even rubbing a little oliveoil over the lips can help mois-turize and prevent cracking.

7. Choose nonfoamingcleansers for the face and bodywhen washing up. This way thesoapy layer doesn’t strip awayessential moisture from the lipidbarrier of the skin.

8. Be sure to continue to applyan SPFproduct every day beforeheading outdoors. Ultravioletrays are still present during thewinter, albeit in less concentra-tion.

9. Avoid frosty eye shadows inthe winter because they tend tomake most people look washedout, especially when the glow ofsummer skin has waned. Simi-larly, avoid overdoing bronzerduring the winter months, which

can seem out of place and makethe skin look artificially orange.

10. Revamp hair color tobring out golden hues during thewinter months and keep youlooking vivacious. Avoid high-lights that are white or ashy.Don’t go for more than twoshades lighter or darker in anydirection for a whole-head color-ing.

11. Hat head is almost asdreaded as a bad hair daybrought on by dry winter air. Hathead occurs when damp hair hasbeen allowed to dry under a hat, which then causes flatteningand denting. Allow hair to drycompletely before donning a hat.And consider parting your hairthe opposite way before puttingon the hat, so it will have volumewhen the hat is removed andhair falls naturally back in place.

When the weather is nice, many people get the urge toentertain just a little more fre-quently. Interior design expertand TV personality GenevieveGorder says the best approachto warm-weather entertainingis to make your space shinewith a comfortable, approach-able style.

Gorder has partnered withMirassou Winery to helpbrighten up entertainingspaces for sharing good timesand making good memories.

Try one of her easy enter-taining ideas to make yourhome feel warm and welcom-ing - putting your guests atease as they raise a glass toyour hosting skills:

■ Create a home bar on anysurface of your home. Arrangebeautiful wine bottles on avintage silver or brass tray, add wine glasses and twotaper candle holders. With abit of mood lighting, glasswareand beverages, a bar is justthat simple and guests knowthey can pour their own wine.

■ Put every surface to usewhen entertaining largegroups, such as stacking coast-ers on the mantle to expandyour typical entertainingspace. Add a pop of color, suchas the bright yellow sun on abottle of Mirassou wine, soguests know they can use themantle as a gathering place.

■ The next time you haveguests over for wine andcheese, create a buffet tablethat works your guests alongthe line visually. Start at thehighest point with flatwareand rolled linen napkins intall vessels, then use caketiers for flatbreads and crack-ers, followed by cutting boardsfor cheeses and accompani-ments at the lowest point inthe middle. Move the eye lineback up again at the finishwith vases of nuts and bottlesof wine.

■ Don’t be afraid to mix ele-ments on your dining table tomake your presentation reallyshine. Think about mixingmetals like brass and silverwith white glass to create apowerful triad. Then use mis-matched plates and chairs tobring a homey and casual feel-ing to a gathering.

■ A fun activity is hosting

an at-home wine tasting. Askguests to bring a bottle of wine

from the same region – such asCalifornia – and then spend

the evening trying differentwines and learning which youlike best.
