always an opportunity to reflect on the priorities in your life.

This month DJ hopes you will enjoy exploring all the exciting new places in Jeddah – the Courtyard for art, Marcel’s for frozen yogurt treats, and Muse for fine cuisine, to name a few. Even while temperatures soar, there are so many wonderful places to help you keep your cool…the beautiful beaches of the Red Sea are popular this time of year, especially in the evenings when the sun begins to set. Visit an Obhur resort for a week-end or week-long getaway; going in a group al-lows you the opportunity to vacation with friends and family. Or sample each ice cream spot in DJ’s favorites from the “No One Says ‘No’…to Ice Cream” article and let us know which ones met with your approval – we’ll be happy to throw our-selves into more ice cream research if required!

Take the stress out of traveling by planning ahead. We’ve filled this issue with useful travel apps, packing tips, and money-saving ideas to help you enjoy your trip, no matter what your budget is. So, safe journey to all those who are venturing abroad. Jeddah will be bustling with excitement as Ramadan approaches next month. Reader’s FeedbackWe’re always happy to hear from you! Opinions, stories, comments, feedback and suggestions from our readers are what made DJ what it is today.

“Who is that woman?” This is what everybody said as they pointed at me in the first wedding I attended in Jeddah. Not because I was so charming… but because I was the only one who was fully covered in the wedding! I was wearing a decent, fully covered dress with a head cover. I explained to the women at the table, “This is my first wedding I’ve attended in Jeddah.” Also, I came at 11PM and left at 1:30AM coz it was my bedtime, but I left without seeing the bride; she came down about 3AM!!Something needs to be done about these weddings, the timing is horrible, plus it passes bedtime, plus you’ll skip prayer time for sure. Not only that - eating dinner at 4 AM is not healthy at all and poor husbands/ brothers or drivers - they have to be awake to pick up their family.Yours faithfully, Hannoon

Dear DJ, “Bite Into Jeddah’s Best Burgers’ was an interesting survey and a good one in the June DJ. However, if I may provide my thoughts/feedback. I felt that there was one very important criteria that was missed or overlooked. This criteria is Value…value for money…Mohamed

Dear Hannoon,We sympathize with your first wedding experience and hope that you’ll have the opportunity to attend more weddings in future now that you’re aware of Jeddahwi customs. As more people become aware of the inconvenience of late-night weddings, more couples do seem to be trying to schedule earlier weddings - as we pointed out in our May ‘DJ Recommends’.DJ Team

Poorly Maintained Kids’ Play Areas

Now that’s school is officially over, are your kids driving you crazy? You can visit an indoor playland to keep them entertained. But as soon as you approach the rides, what do you find? An exposed wire, sharp edges and torn leather...some rides are so filthy that you can’t tell what its original color was! Not to mention the stained carpets, dusty drapes and the unattended AC filters, which are noticeably filthy. Most amusement parks have suggestion boxes - if a handful of park visitors filled out a suggestion form commenting upon the poor state of the rides, the management may be motivated to start seriously thinking about regular maintenance and repairs for a safer, cleaner, and more attractive environment.

Thumbs down to... Thumbs up to...Outdoor Air Conditioning

The Jeddah outdoor dining scene has so much to offer, but most people are reluctant to venture outside once the temperatures start to soar. But summer heat doesn’t mean you have to postpone the pleasure of dining al fresco in Jeddah - many cafes and restaurants around town are installing outdoor AC’s. Their diners can now enjoy their food and the scenery in air-conditioned comfort. So, Thumbs Up to Nosh Lounge, The Courtyard, Park Hayatt Marina, Al-Nakheel and Balsamico (to name a few) for giving us the luxury of outdoor dining even in the heat of the summer - thank you!

but no one welcomes the associated travel hassles which begin once you step into the airport. From poorly managed traffic in the parking lots (why do taxis have to entirely block three lanes??), to poorly signed airline queues (once a traveler stood in line for over half an hour for a Turkish Airline flight to Istanbul, only to discover upon reaching the counter that he was about to embark on a Nigerian Airways flight to Lagos!), to stressed out airline staff dealing with customer’s overweight luggage – it’s enough to make you want to stay home.

Is there a solution to stress-free travel? While it’s impossible to eliminate ALL potential

trouble spots – there are ways to help travelers and airport/airline staff cooperate efficiently together. First of all, allow yourself enough time; arrive at the airport at least 3 hours early so that you are calm and have enough time to get to your ticket counter, check in your luggage, visit the restroom, pass through immigration, and even treat yourself to a cup of coffee while you relax at your gate. Second, pack light! No one wants to pay overweight luggage fees, so do yourself and the airline staff a favor and keep your bags labeled and light.

Airport staff should remember that their primary job is to assist passengers. They need to smile, answer questions cheerfully and knowledgably, and above all, keep the travelers happy. Airline staff should treat each passenger as a family member and try to accommodate special meal/seating requests whenever possible. Airports should be the first step in a pleasurable trip rather than a necessary evil to be endured.

Everyone loves to travel…

Settling In

Useful Information

Newcomers to Jeddah arrive from all corners of the world. Whether it’s for work, fam-ily, business, or religion – most people have surprisingly similar concerns when it comes to adjusting to life in a new country. While Des-tination Jeddah usually covers the specifics of all issues relating to expats in the ‘Settling In’ section; this month DJ is taking a broad over-view of life in Jeddah. It’s all about connecting with people in similar situations…you may uncover some secrets to making the transition a successful one.

and you’ll soon be the person in the know. Be forewarned that Jeddah is a spur of the moment kind of city – events may only be announced a few days in advance, so keep an eye on your Facebook alerts for the latest updates. Join plenty of expat groups as news spreads fast via different channels – also sign up with your consulate for their cultural events.Understand?

“What does that mean?” If you don’t speak Arabic, then you’re probably going to ask this question at least five times/day. Immerse yourself in your new environment by enrolling in a begin-ner’s Arabic class, then practice what little you know…with everyone you meet. Jeddahwis love to hear visitors try to speak Arabic, and they’re very patient and helpful with your mistakes, so don’t worry. Understanding the conversation of others will gradually make you feel more a part of the city; mastering spoken Arabic is more challenging, but with time you‘ll be surprised at how easily you can communicate.

Helpful Hints

- Trying to find a needle and thread? You don’t need to actually go to the fabric souk – check out the local ‘baqala’ or corner shop for a surprising variety of daily necessities.- Trying to find Scotch Tape/sticky tape? The corner stationary store will carry all your home office supplies.- Trying to find nail polish/nail polish remover? Either a large grocery store or the specialized makeup stores in a big mall will have a good variety to choose from.- Trying to find a specialized international food ingredient? Most of Jeddah’s large grocery stores have dedicated foreign food aisles catering to foreign work-ers from many different countries – check them out!

Information Solutions

“Where can I find…?” This question seems to be the #1 question expats ask about housing, cars, food, shopping – you name it – someone is curious to find something in Jeddah! If you’ve just arrived, chances are that you hardly know anyone to ask. Even if you’ve been here for months, you may still find yourself wondering where to locate that vital ingredient or household item which you just can’t live without. The first step to take when you feel that you are suffering from information withdrawal is to ask – ask your neighbors, your driver, the per-son behind you in line at the checkout, your work staff etc. You’ll never know where to go unless you ask everyone you can think of – you’ll be surprised to discover that your maid may actually be a fount of knowledge, especially if she’s worked for a variety of employers. Read!

“When is that happening?” Another popular ques-tion expats ask is about local events, festivals etc. You want to attend everything and see everything…but you never know when anything is happening! Dear Settling In,

My family lives in Jeddah while I’m in LA. The thing I love MOST about going back home is the food; specifically home cooked meals. Eating in is all I want to do when I’m back with my father and brother.

One of my favorite memories is being picked up from the airport by them; on the way home, they asked me where I wanted to eat. I said, “I want to eat at home, I want molokhia.” My father said there was a great new restaurant that he wanted me to try. “Okay,” I said, how could I say no? So where do we roll up to? Chilli’s! My eyes couldn’t roll back far enough! I don’t even eat at Chilli’s in the States! After dinner, he said we must go and have his favorite dessert in his new favorite place. Although I was tired, I agreed since I can’t say no to my beaming father. We pulled up to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Really, Dad, really?!? I just giggled. I guess they wanted me to feel at home.

Prince Khalid Al Faisal, Governor of Makkah Region, proudly lends his support to initiatives which promote Saudi professionalism. Talented young chefs posed with him along with their proud fathers; the cover of Destination Jeddah’s May issue inspired Prince Faisal to personally request a meeting with these two chefs in particular. Well known for his support of his citizens, Prince Faisal encourages the upcoming generation to pursue their dreams by training in a variety of fields in order to serve their country.

On the same day at the Leylaty Ballroom HRH also attended the Prince Sultan College of Tourism & Hospitality’s first graduation ceremony for a group of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The beaming faces of all the young graduates testified to their pride in achieving this degree. They are now ready to embark on careers in the expanding field of tourism and hospitality around the world. The

“The country is struggling with a poverty of capability.”Initially, this may seem like a pessimistic view of the current issues facing Saudi Arabia. Saudis today fight to change the notions that have been created about them, not only globally, but also on a much more local scale. The above quote is an eloquent perspective on some of these issues by Sheikh Saleh Al-Turki, counted among Jeddah’s foremost business leaders and one of the most respected voices of the community. His perspective is born of humility, experience, and many decades spent in the service to his society. Currently, Al-Turki is the Chairman of the Board of Nesma Holding Group Company. His previously held positions include Chairman of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI), Chairman of Al-Birr Society and various positions on the boards of several prominent Saudi businesses and institutions.

Tomorrow’s Future

Jeddah’s Who’sWho

By Dina Ismail

Business

DESTINATION JEDDAH12

Today, Al-Turki is an imposing figure in his role as a well-respected player in the rapidly changing Saudi economy. But he took his first steps into the world of business through humble means – as a salesman in the clothing store owned by his father, in the Eastern Province where Al-Turki grew up.

“I remember not expecting to go into business when I was young. Like everyone at the time, I hoped to end up with a government position,” Al-Turki recalled over strong tea in a conference room at the stately Nesma Holding Company

Page 15: DJ Issue 30

DESTINATION JEDDAH 13

offices. Al-Turki pursued his expectations of an eventual role in government with a B.A. in Public Administration from AUB in Lebanon and an M.A. in Administration from California State University in the US.

However, business was plainly where he belonged. Al-Turki went on to found some of the most prominent companies in the Kingdom, particularly the Nesma Holding Company which spans a dizzying range of industries including travel, retail, real estate, construction and several others. Al-Turki explains his diversified approach to business as a pragmatic decision to spread potential risk. “I began by focusing on industries that I felt were lacking something. I positioned pillars of those industries as leaders of new businesses (under Nesma Holding) and that’s part of the reason that we’re so diversified today.”

Al-Turki spoke about the importance of the family-owned business (which the majority of Saudi companies are) in social responsibility. “The most important issue is to keep ownership and governance separate,” he offered, as a way through which to implement effective and tangible CSR. One example of just this issue lies quite close to home for the prominent businessman. Al-Turki’s son, Faisal, is currently heading up Nesma Airlines. No danger of nepotism here - Faisal still underwent a strenuous research and analysis process before launching the airline. A commercial airline headquartered in Jeddah, Nesma Airlines operates flights between Europe, Egypt, and the Kingdom. It will soon offer direct flights to the Kingdom’s more remote cities such as Tabuk. Part of the logic behind this is to revitalize those communities through

transportation accessibility and convenience. Indeed, almost every company under the Nesma umbrella seems to produce some positive social byproduct in one way or another.

Nesma is also a well-known provider of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs that create a positive and visible impact on the surrounding community. Al-Turki described how Islam plays a role in directing CSR but how ultimately,

“We live in a community, not a vacuum. Everyone has the chance to improve their capabilities and it is the responsibility of all to contribute to this society.”

DESTINATION JEDDAH 13

corporate social responsibility and charity are two very separate entities. “The principles of Islam (e.g. zakat) support philanthropy,” he commented. “However, the creation of an affluent society requires a CSR policy of great effort, resource availability, and creativity.”

A fierce proponent of the ideal of the qualified Saudi employee, Al-Turki aims to to provide today’s generation with the skills and capabilities to lead successive generations. The Nesma Training Center and other skill-building initiates hosted by Nesma intends to eliminate what Al-Turki calls the “poverty of capability” that exists in Saudi Arabia today. By training Saudis in key areas such as English and computer skills as well as technical professions, the Nesma Training Center, to great success, provides Saudi youth with the tools needed to fill the gaps in the employment market. In one center today, over half of the current 140 employees were initially trained at the Nesma Center.

Page 16: DJ Issue 30

DESTINATION JEDDAH14

Al-Turki’s colleagues also speak highly of his vision and unique perspective on the problems facing Saudi Arabia today. Mazen Munshi, Marketing Manager of Nesma, recalled one of Al-Turki’s eloquent analogies of the current difficulties for young Saudi job-seekers. “He said, ‘Water, water, everywhere/Nor any drop to drink’.* It always stuck with me how he put it. All these opportunities in the Saudi economy and Saudis themselves are having difficulties in securing employment.” Al-Turki is deeply committed to the concept of Saudization through the implementation of training programs that produce qualified Saudis to fulfill the needs of the labor market. He stated that, “Companies who do not implement Saudization will not be successful in the future. Certain habits and perspectives have grown over the past thirty years starting from the oil boom in the economy. Simply, these habits and perspectives need to be changed and improved.”

However, can these deeply ingrained mindsets really be swayed? If so, the question of how this lofty goal can be accomplished inevitably arises. Al-Turki begins by setting the much needed foundation. Through training, motivational programs, and an understanding of the great need to create a corporate culture that is conducive to bringing out the productivity in every type of employee, Al-Turki reaffirmed his commitment to supplying today’s youth with the tools required to succeed tomorrow. “In partnership with the government, the private sector needs to take the lead on this issue,” he commented. Indeed, Nesma seems to be at the forefront of this struggle to revitalize the talent pool of Saudi employees. Part of this includes Al-Turki’s continuous efforts to contribute to his society

through numerous initiatives and programs.

Nesma was the first corporate donor of scholarships to the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST). The Nesma Tatriz initiative is a non-profit organization which employs females, particularly those who are hearing-impaired or orphaned, to be intensively trained in embroidery and sewing.

The proceeds from their work go back into helping the hearing-impaired and those with other disabilities. Nesma has constructed and maintained parks for public use in the Al-Safa districts in an ongoing effort to beautify Jeddah. The Al-Birr Society, a charitable foundation chaired by Al-Turki, was recently involved with the January 2011 flood relief efforts through food and first aid distributions, post-flood renovations for damaged houses, and other support initiates. Nesma Holding Co. is a regular sponsor of career days at local women’s universities/colleges such as Dar Al-Hekma and Effat University. In short, there are few areas that aren’t in some way or another, impacted by the consistent philanthropy and tireless efforts of Al-Turki and his commitment to improving his country.

Today, Al-Turki is a striking example of how an individual can be successful not only in his business but also in his philanthropy. In the hope of ending this inspiring interview with hope and optimism, it is not difficult to imagine that with the support and vision of the uniquely singular Sheikh Saleh Al-Turki, perhaps Saudis can one day enjoy a tremendous “wealth of capability”.

On employment opportunities for Saudis:

‘Water, water, everywhere/Nor any drop to drink.’

Jeddah is a city of people who enjoy food, art, and socializing. Al-Mathaaq Company combined all of these into unforgettable event - the Courtyard Urban Art Show, which opened on 7 June and will continue for six weeks.

Some of Jeddah’s most prominent personalities gathered at the inaugural exhibition to enjoy the work of local Saudi artists and delicious nibbles at the stunning Courtyard location in Bin Sulaiman Center. Partnering with LEXUS (Abdul-Latif Jameel) and SABB Premier, Al-Mathaaq Group is planning a series of exhibitions over the next several months to showcase the work of budding young artists.

“With this project, we aim to create a unique venue for entertainment through art and dining, introducing the Urban Art Exhibition concept

to a wider audience, creating a link between culture, art and food to showcase the talent of these young artists,” said Bandar Al-Sulaiman, Managing Director of Al-Mathaaq. “We also want to help direct the talent of Saudi artists towards benefiting their country and community by providing a new medium in the Kingdom - ‘The Courtyard” for artists to exhibit their work. One of the best advantages of living in Jeddah is the close proximity and easy access of the beautiful coastline. Picturesque beaches are dotted up and down the coast and there is one to suit every type of person: from professional beach bum to frolicking families, DJ brings you the best of Jeddah’s beaches.

Jeddah’s coastal area, Obhur, is well-known among residents as offering some of the most beautiful beaches this side of the Red Sea. It’s definitely worth the 20-30 minute car ride up the coast - those in search of sun, sea, and sky will find several beach resorts, diving centers, and private beach houses all throughout Obhur.

Quick Getaways: Obhur’s Beach ResortsThere are several resorts which offer day and weekend use open to the public - these are perfect for family gatherings and family beach mini-breaks. It’s simply

a matter of calling up one of the many resorts that offer rentals and making the time. Many of these resorts, such as Al-Nakheel and Coral Beach offer chalets at all different levels - ranging from simple 1 room/1 bath to villas fully equipped with kitchenettes, balconies, and multiples bedrooms and bathrooms. Most of these resorts have differing policies regarding beach and pool use for males and females - make sure to check what’s appropriate before jumping in! The popular resorts such as Rimal and Durrat-Al-Arous offer expansive boardwalks with outdoor seating, several popular fast food

branches, and even game arcades. Chalets are also available for long-term rentals, however there is usually quite a waiting list for these.

Other resorts do not offer open rental policy but rather offer their services only to their members and guests of members. These more exclusive resorts, such as Silver Sands, Salhia, and Fal, are more difficult to gain entry to; if you are not a member, then you may have to rely on one to sign you in. Many of these private resorts are highly in demand and rent out chalets as well as lockers (basically a shower/storage area) on a yearly basis, again with quite the wait list. Restaurants, pool areas, and water sports are also usually available.

If you’re in Jeddah on a temporary stay at a hotel, be sure to check with your hotel whether they offer use of their beaches to guests - many of the big hotels such as Intercontinental and Sheraton have beach resort counterparts located in Obhur.

Diving CentersIf you’re looking for less of a beach bum experience, then Obhur’s many marinas and dive centers do not disappoint. Many of the diving centers such as Desert Sea Divers, Dream Divers, and Marsa Al-Ahlam offer boat rentals, diving lessons and packages and even island getaways for the adventure-bound. Be sure to check out DJ’s Resorts directory for more information and our regular contributor and Red Sea expert Hans Sjoeholm is a great source of information on diving in Jeddah.

Private HomesMany Jeddah families are fortunate enough to have private beach residences in Obhur. This is a great way to experience the coast in a very personal way - with family and friends in a beautiful and private environment. If you’re lucky enough to know someone who will invite you along, don’t hesitate - it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Attention, Beachers! The Obur beach scene is a world unto its own, with its own lingo and considerations. Keep the following in mind:

- Many resorts are usually packed on Thursdays and Fridays (with Friday being the traditional family day.) For a more secluded beach experience, try to make a trip during the week if you can find the time off work!

- Some beach resorts have restrictions upon entry. These range from nationality, number of guests you can ‘sign in’, and certain days of the week. Save yourself a long car ride for nothing and be sure to check policies in advance.

- Obhur is home to many popular restaurants and mini-markets. You’ll definitely be able to grab some coffee or suntan lotion along Obhur Road so don’t worry too much about bringing extra supplies with you.

- There are so many beach resorts in Jeddah and all have different policies regarding swimming, appropriate clothing, sunbathing, gender-specific areas, etc. Don’t be afraid to ask if you’re unsure - better safe than sorry!

- Be sure that you’re swimming in an area of the beach which is safe - stay on the lookout for slippery rocks, surprise undertows, etc.

Yorghos Kontaxis:A Master of Visual Art

The Yorghos Kontaxis Photography Exhibition recently held at the Athr Gallery was a tribute to this multi-talented visual artist. Acclaimed “as one of America’s most masterful visual artists,” this native of Greece (1947-2010) was an accomplished actor, photographer, screen-writer, and documentary filmmaker.

Kontaxis also worked with directors Sergio Leone and Alan Parker and producer Dino De Laurentis as a production-still photographerfor movies and television. He was head of the photography department at the Stamford Museum in Connecticut from 1975 until 1982.

During his 37 years of art practice, Kontaxis’ work was shown in more than 25 solo and 15 group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Greece. Mahrajan Al-Hareed:The Festival of Parrot Fish

Our last adventure took us on an amazing trip to experience one of the most unique festivals in the world: Mahrajan Al Hareed - The Parrot Fish Festival. Five of us drove south along the coastal highway until we reached Jizan. It’s an 800km trip which took us from 9pm until 5:30am the following day, so make sure you have enough snack food, lively playlists for your iPod, and some good company on the journey, like we did.

We arrived at Jizan’s seaport at 5:30AM where we embarked on a felucca, a small sailing boat which can seat approximately 15 intrepid travelers, for the short trip to Farasan Island. We usually take the free ferry that is provided by the government, a state-of-the- art ferry which carries cars as well as passengers; you have to book your place one or two days in advance. The ferry is a quick one hour ride, but since the sea was calm, we felt like enjoying the more authentic, old-fashioned ride aboard a felucca for only SR50 per person.

When we arrived at Farasan Island, a friend of ours, Ali Al-Absi, was waiting to greet us. After a quick stop at his house where we freshened up and had breakfast, we continued on to the beach where all the action lies. An area called Hasses, about 10km from Farasan, is where the actual Parrot Fish Festival is held. The organizers had set up three huge tents to shelter visitors from the sun; people were mingling and enjoying the party atmosphere, some with faces painted in the colors of parrot fish! Everyone was anxious to start the race to

Page 37: DJ Issue 30

the fenced-in area where the parrot fish were gathered. On the 14th, 15th, and 16th of the lunar month during high tide, parrot fish flock to this area for an annual migration. Organizers gather the fish into off-shore pens for this unique, hands-on, fishing competition. The whistle went off at 10:30am and a huge number of people rushed into the water, jostling each other for prime fishing locations. The most popular method of catching the fish was by hand with a small net that looks like a mini-basketball net, but some people were literally catching the fish with their bare hands! People shoved the wriggling fish down their shirts and into their pant pockets – what a scene! Although I was only a spectator at this year’s competition, I do know one thing for sure… next year I will be joining the fun with the other fishermen.

It was so breath taking to witness the finale of the event. The winner was the person who caught the most number of parrot fish in the designated time. What a great experience; truly a must-see, one-of-a-kind competition for all those who enjoy water, fishing, and great adventures.

Do you remember Bruce Lee’s famous 1-inch punch? With a hand movement of just an inch Bruce Lee was able to knock down an opponent. Well, the Red Sea has its own cast of martial artists with expertise in both offense and defense, seriously!

Mantis Shrimps, Gobies and ShrimpsThe reef and seafloor are full of holes, nooks and crannies; these provide shelter for some, and a place to search for a meal for others. Hovering motionless near the sea floor or along a reef wall allows a buoyant diver a vantage point to spot these benthic denizens.Enter the ShrimpThe Mantis Shrimp is a heavily armored shellfish that can grow up to 38cm long. The Club mantis may reach 10cm, but is seldom seen since it is well camouflaged and buries itself in holes on the sea bottom. The mantis has decorated armor plating along its body and on its appendages; once inside

its burrow, it cleverly uses these plates to hold back the sand while it disguises the entrance to its shelter, making it invisible to even the most experienced diver. Mantis shrimp are ambush predators; they rely on keen eyesight to spot prey. They can see objects with three different parts of the same eye, and the eyes can move independently of each other. The eyes themselves are on stalks extending upwards like a submarine periscope which allow the mantis shrimp to size up prey, predators and competition from the comfort of their burrow.

Mantis Shrimp are most famous for their powerful forearms which they use to strike

prey into submission. When scaled to size, the force of the blow equals the force of a rifle bullet! These large raptorial claws are forward folding like the arms of a praying mantis, and are designed for either smashing or spearing prey or adversaries. Skeletons from rival mantis are scattered around their burrows along with fragments of smashed crab/snail shells. The mantis shrimp forelimb strike is one of the fastest movements known in the animal kingdom – they can even crack the glass in aquariums! Get too close with an underwater camera and you may end up with a broken lens port. They are also known as thumb splitters, so keep a respectful distance; these underwater

tough guys will defend themselves if they feel threatened.

The TaiChi Shrimp and its Amazing Energy BlastSnapping Shrimps, also known as Pistol Shrimps of the family Alpheidae are characterized by their asymmetrical claws, the larger of which is capable of producing a loud snapping sound. They are one of the loudest sea animals. Their claws contain a pistol-like feature made of two parts which allows the «hammer» part to lock backward into a right-angled position. When released, it snaps forward, emitting an enormously powerful energy pulse capable of stunning prey.

ICE-CREAM

Beat the Heat with

As temperatures soar around the city, Jeddahwis reach for their favorite ice-cream concoction to help them keep their cool. Ice cream has been available in the Middle East for hundreds of years. Originally introduced to the Hijaz by the Ottomans, it was called ‘dondurma’, which means ‘freezing’ in Turkish. It was in the mid-1960’s that modern ice-cream was introduced to Jeddah and locally made versions quickly gained a following. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that Baskin Robbins, Movenpick, and other international brands flooded the marketplace.

Jeddahwis are spoilt for choice in today’s crowded ice-cream scene – there’s sorbet, gelato, frozen yogurt, gourmet creations, and ‘make-your-own flavor’ to select from! As exotic flavors such as pistachio, rose, and gourmet concoctions became popular, people embraced the custom of going out for a weekly ice-cream treat with the entire family. Frozen yogurt, gelato, and non-fat versions are also becoming widespread amongst Jeddah’s foodies. Frozen yoghurt, in particular, was extremely popular in the 80s and early 90s before giving way to classic ice cream. However, with the advent of a more health-conscious society, frozen yoghurt is making a delicious comeback in a big way. Whatever your choice is, all ice cream lovers will agree - there’s nothing more refreshing than strolling along the Corniche enjoying a cooling ice-cream treat. Check out DJ’s deliciously cold favorites!

Gelato: More flavor and less fat than regular ice-cream, with 24 yummy flavors including all the Italian favorites, plus local specialties with honey, dates etc.

Al Muhannad: Traditional milk-based ice creams in fresh fruit flavors. Wonderful soft ice cream!

Haagen-Dazs: Rich, gourmet ice cream in a dazzling variety of flavors, especially chocolate concoctions.

Baskin Robbins: An oldie, but goodie, with the familiar flavors of your childhood.

McDonald’s: An old favorite, McDonald’s sundae ice cream is unbeatable, even in terms of price!

Jeddah’s gourmands are familiar with Lallo, the premiere Italian which remains an old favorite and cherished experience. Lallo has remained at the top for over a decade - their commitment to quality has remained of paramount importance. In addition to the regular menu, a special Tasting Menu is updated on a regular basis to reflect seasonal ingredients and new dishes. Offering such temptations as the Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli with Pomodoro Sauce, the Jumbo Shrimp Sardinia, and the Spaghetti with Clams, the tasting menu ensures that every visit to Lallo is an experience bursting with new flavors. With homemade bresaola (dry salted beef) on offer, die-hard bresaola fans have long counted on Lallo (the only restaurant in the Kingdom that prepares bresaola itself) as a consistent supplier of what is regarded as an Italian restaurant staple. Pasta is also produced by Lallo in its specialized pasta factories and is supplied to local Italian restaurants and five star hotels. Customers even have the added bonus of being able to purchase some of Lallo’s famous pasta to prepare at home (although recreating the succulent Black Pasta with Lobster may be a long shot). The breadbaskets are also filled with warm fresh bread clearly fresh out of the oven (which luckily, is also sold in loaves!). Along with imported clams and oysters from Holland and fresh produce bought on a daily basis, it’s not difficult to see how Lallo maintains its strict standards of quality and taste.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Restaurant Manager Abdul Razak Said Alavi prides himself on knowing regular customers personally and treating every visit like a warm dinner between friends. The

ebullient Master Chef and Operations Manager, Chef Alaa Edin Abdelhai, is a fixture both in the kitchen as well as the dining room. Greeting customers, offering recommendations, Abdelhai is the Arab version of the jolly Italian chef and a pleasure to be around.

For fifteen years, Lallo has been a fixture in the rapidly expanding Jeddah restaurant scene. For an authentic Italian experience in a singularly inviting atmosphere, Lallo should be at the top of every discerning diner’s ‘must-visit’ list.

Be Inspired By MuseThe Muses of ancient Greek mythology were the goddesses who inspired the creation of literature and the fine arts. Fast forward two centuries to Muse, the new French-inspired restaurant near the Park Hyatt on the Corniche. With an adventurous twist on many classic dishes, Muse succeeds in offering delicious food in a lovely sea-side setting.

By Dalia Najim

The modern, contemporary interior decor, complete with high ceilings, dangling chandeliers, and granite stone walls, sets an elegant tone to the ambience. A stunning glass wall along one side of the restaurant allows a spectacular view of the Red Sea and Marina. Owner and Head Chef, Badr Fayez, expresses creativity in his artful plating of food and will have you experimenting with new textures

and flavors. Crowd pleasers such as Caesar Salad and Tomato Mozzarella are available, as well as novel creations such as Bouillabaisse Cappuccino. It’s actually a sumptuous seafood bouillabaisse which is topped with foam to make it look like a cappuccino – imaginative! The Tomato Gazpacho is served with a scoop of mustard ice cream; a perfect complement to the cold soup – refreshing and different.

Both the chef’s adventurous touches and the high quality of the ingredients ensure that your meal will become an experience. Muse is one of the few restaurants which presents a refreshing ‘palate cleanser’ between courses - a small glass of frozen, minty Moroccan Tea served with a drizzle of pomegranate molasses. Amongst their winning entrées is the well executed Naajil, which comes out perfectly cooked and elegantly presented on a bed of purple cabbage. The Filet Mignon steak is a thick, juicy, well-seasoned portion surrounded by roasted potatoes and served with a side of mustard.

The creativity of the Chef truly continues with the desserts which include some surprisingly

non-traditional flavors of homemade ice cream such as Ginger, Rhubarb, Passion Fruit and even Yoghurt. The Lemon Tart is beautifully deconstructed, placed in a large glass, and served with a side of strawberry and rose flavored mousse artistically garnished with white chocolate and a meringue.

Definitely not your grandma’s home-cooking, Muse is inspiring and adventurous. Prices are a little steep, but given the high-profile location and superior quality of ingredients, it’s still reasonable for a fine-dining evening by the sea.

I’m sure you’ve all experienced this… you have an all-time favorite place to eat, but then a few years pass and the overall quality of food goes down. Fortunately, this wasn’t the case when I revisited Il Gabbiano’s, one of the staples in Jed-dah’s fine-dining Italian food scene.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was re-minded of a random hotel lobby; border-line cheesy with all the painted seagulls on the wall, (‘gabbiano’ is Italian for ‘seagull’.) We settled on a three-course meal; appetizers of carpaccio and grilled calamari, main course of pizza and fish, and then dessert. We were given a basket of various breads accompanied by olive spread and fresh tomatoes soaked in balsamic vinegar, which we nibbled enthusiastically as we waited for our order. The calamari arrived char-grilled with mustard dressing drizzled lightly over it, while the carpaccio had parmesan shavings on a bed of arugula. Both items were visually appetizing and delicious. The beef was fresh and thinly sliced while the calamari was smoky and rich.

Our main courses of Napoletana pizza and Tarabani fried fish came out piping hot. The pizza was thin crust, crispy and perfectly cooked; slightly salty from the anchovies, but that’s how my

Location: Near Al-Nawras roundabout in North Corniche

family likes it. I had never ordered the Tarabani fish before, but when the waiter mentioned that it was the most popular dish, I went for it. It came on a bed of mashed potatoes garnished with mussels and lemon sauce. The fish was perfectly fried, flaky, and tender and the sauce was a perfect complement to the flavor.

We finished the meal with tiramisu, home-made lemon sorbet, and crème brule. Generally, I stay away from tiramisu because I find it either has too much cake or too much cream… however this one was enjoyable as it wasn’t too sweet. The lemon sorbet was refreshing after the big meal, and although slightly heavy, the crème brule was large enough to share.

Overall, it was a pleasantly surprising experience because not too many local restaurants have stood the test of time, plus it’s reasonably priced for fine-dining and conveniently located. If I have one complaint about the food, it would be that there were too many capers on the Napo-letana Pizza. Now there’s a complaint I can live with…it’s not often you’re faced with too much of a good thing.

Il Gabbiano, still flying! Il Gabbiano’s

Prayerful Play or Playful Prayer? Combining play with prayer may seem like a contradiction in terms, but any Muslim with children, especially toddlers, will immediately relate to the following question:

How do you interact with your children when they disturb your prayers?

1. They don’t disturb me because I lock myself in my bedroom (or lock them in their rooms when I’m praying.)2. I smack them so now they keep their distance and wait till I’ve finished.3. I allow them to mimic my actions or climb on top of my back while I’m praying – it doesn’t distract me at all.

The ideal answer is #3 because it will inculcate and inspire a love of prayer, one of the most visible aspects of Islamic practice, especially in the home. Children are naturally curious and wonderful imitators, so what better way to teach them how to pray than by observing their parents in prayer? Instead of insisting that they sit quietly and observe the prayer ritual, let them participate to the best of their ability. As they grow older, they will naturally assume the correct postures and gestures to accompany the prayer. Allowing children to associate prayer time with love and patience will ensure that they view their prayers with the peacefulness of spirit which embodies the essence of prayer.

It was narrated that Shaddad-bin-Aws, May Allah be pleased with him, said:“One day, the Prophet, PBUH, came in at the time of one of the evening prayers, carrying Al Hassan or Al Hussein. Then, the Prophet went forward, laid the small kid aside, and he started praying. During the prayer, he made one of his prostrations so long that I raised my head up. I found the small kid mounting on the back of the Prophet. So, I lowered my head down again. After the

Prophet ended the prayer, the companions asked: “Messenger of Allah, we have noticed that one of the prostrations was so long, that we thought there was something unusual, or that you were receiving revelation (of Qur’an).” “All that did not happen”, was the Prophet’s reply, adding: “My grandson was mounting on my back, and I did not like to rush the kid before getting enough of what he likes.”

Indulge YourSelf While You Travel…and STILL Save Money!

- Do your homework before you land. Does your destination have an extensive metro/subway system which makes it unnecessary for you to have to rent a car? Look into 3-day or 5-day travel passes for the best values.

- It may be worth paying a premium for a centrally located hotel – think of all the taxi fares you’ll save if you can simply walk to the attractions and restaurants every day. Remember to pack comfortable shoes.

- Make sure you read notice boards/bulletin boards in grocery stores for local news & announcements. Try to head off the beaten path and eat where the locals eat.- Visit a grocery store for drinks and sandwich supplies – you can pack a picnic lunch in order to splurge on dinner.

It can be done – going on holiday doesn’t have to mean that you’ll be on a strict budget for months after you’ve returned home. Assuming that you shopped around for the best airfare, there are still many ways to stretch your hard earned

savings when you’re on vacation so that you still enjoy yourself. Going on holiday should be a relaxing, exciting adventure – following a few of these tips can ensure that you don’t stress over the bills at the end of the journey.

- Check museum timings for late afternoon/evening admission ticket discounts.

- Take advantage of student/senior discounts – when in doubt, don’t be shy to ask for a group discount etc.

- It’s worth buying a city-guide or weekly entertainment guide for up-to-date info about festivals, shows, restaurant openings etc. Try to catch street fairs for local flavor – they’re full of arts & crafts, snack food stalls, and authentic sights and sounds.

- Wander the side streets to discover little boutiques off the beaten track – they may be more willing to bargain in order to make a sale.

How to Maintain Great Skin this Summer

We regularly transform our wardrobe or rearrange our homes, but how about our skincare routine? Living in the hot, humid climate of the Middle East exposes our skin to UV rays and dusty weather conditions, therefore a protective, proactive skincare regime is a must!

Check out these top 5 useful tips from the skincare experts at Pond’s:

Unwind along with your skincare routine… after a long hectic day in the office or running errands, your body and your skin needs to relax. Having a reliable, restorative skin cleansing routine helps your pores breathe and re-energizes your skin. It also achieves blemish-free skin and resolves mysterious acne problems – so find a routine that works for you and stick with it on a daily basis.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! Using a face and body moisturizer twice a day should be a crucial part of your daily routine, even if you have oily skin. Not only does moisturizing prevent your skin from looking rough, it also delays skin aging signs and problems.

Eyes are the windows to the soul….if your eyes are the first thing other people

notice when they meet you, make sure they get as much attention

as the rest of your face! Add an eye cream to

your daily skincare routine; for the ultimate eye-therapy treatment, try Pond’s Duo Eye-Therapy UV Eye Cream, a unique formula with double the impact: collagen upper eye cream reduces lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet and lower eye cream with ‘chamomile’ extract to reduce puffiness and brighten dark circles after a big night.

Don’t forget to slather on sunscreen with a high SPF. To make your daily skin care routine easier, opt for a day cream that has at least SPF 15 to protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays. Try Pond’s Gold Radiance Day Cream with SPF 15 or Pond’s Age Miracle, Daily Resurfacing Cream with SPF PA++ containing the unique Advanced CLA4 Complex – a new generation combination of powerful anti-aging ingredients CLA technology designed to help reduce unwanted age spots & wrinkles – fast!

H2O is the way to go! Drinking a healthy amount of water (amount differs for each individual, however 8 glasses a day is usually recommended) is essential for your skin. Water also helps your organs in absorbing the nutrients such as vitamins like C and A that your skin needs to look healthy and radiant, especially after sun exposure. So keep a large bottle of water on your desk at work, at the gym for that workout, in the car when running errands, or at home – stay hydrated and stay healthy!

*Caution: Before embarking on any weight loss program, it’s important to check with your doctor.

Day One:Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Consume only soup and fruit for the first day. Drink as much unsweetened tea, cranberry juice and water as you desire.

How To Lose 4 Kilos in 1 Week

Try the popular Cabbage Soup Dietif you’re trying to lose weight quickly for that special occasion. It’s cheap, easy to prepare, and easy to follow, plus the low-fat, high-fiber combo packs a powerful punch to kick-start more sensible, long-lasting weight loss regimens. Keep in mind, however, that all diets are rendered more effective when done in addition to a healthy exercise regimen.

Caution: This diet should only be followed for 1 week at a time - allow 2 weeks before resuming it again.

Summer vacations, family reunions, parties… for whatever reason, most of us are eager to lose those unwanted kilos which seem to creep up on us every winter. If you need to lose weight quickly in order to squeeze into that special gown or custom tailored suit, follow these tips and watch the kilos drop off. The basic rule of consuming fewer calories than you expend on a daily basis is the cornerstone of any weight loss program, so try to avoid diet pills, fad diets (although some are fun to try on a short- term basis), or surgery as your first option.

Day Two:Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed full of fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Drink as muchsoup as you want. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat any fruit today.

Day Three:Combine Day One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want, but sorry, no baked potato with butter today!

Day Four:Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat up to eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you like, plus as much soup as you desire. This day is supposed to lessen your cravingfor sweets, so stay from the sugar!

Essential Items1. Buy attractive exercise clothes to inspire you to workout – check out these local gyms for a wide variety of exercise classes including yoga, aerobics etc.

2. Visit some gourmet grocery stores for low-calorie nibbles to prevent a late night Al Baik visit. 3. Diet books which itemize sensible menus and fat-burning exercises can help you structure your weight loss regiment. Jarir has a good selection in stock if you don’t have time to order online.

Day Five:Beef And Tomatoes: Eat 10-20 ozs. of beef and up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water to flush the uric acid from your body. Dinrk your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).

Day Six:Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart’s content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables, but no baked potato. Drink at least one serving of soup.

Day Seven:Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to have atleast one serving of soup today.

Directions:Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.

Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time – two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Keys to Success- Follow the diet religiously.- Drink at least 4 glasses of water per day.- Keep in mind that it’s only seven days.- Supplement the diet with a good multivitamin tablet.- Cut out the daily diet instructions so you can easily refer to it.

- Eat plenty of soup – as much as you want! - Do not try to starve yourself or you’ll probably cheat and break the diet.- Try different spices to liven up the soup and add excitement to your taste buds.

Organic Beauty: Munat Al Barkaka

Walk, rent a bicycle, or take public transportationAll of these options are more eco-friendly than driving, plus walking/cycling will also give you some exercise.

If you are renting a car, choose a hybrid These can help you save money on fuel costs and will also reduce the carbon emissions your produce while driving.

Eat locallySeek out local restaurants that source their foods from local farmers. You will get better tasting, fresher food and you’ll be supporting the environment (and local economy) at the same time.

Buy local souvenirsBuying keepsakes from local artists who have local products will give you something that is truly reminiscent of your vacation destination. Buying locally also supports a reduction of emissions because you aren’t purchasing items that shipped from some far away location.

Ana Special Mall is home to several little boutiques and stalls that offer some of Jeddah’s best beauty products that are also well-kept secrets. One of these gems is Munat Al-Baraka, an organic stall located on the ground floor of the mall (under the escalator). Offering completely organic food items such as oils, pickles, jams and herbs, every would-be chef needs to pay a visit to this stall to add a kick to every day meals. Another great product line is that of Raynadi, a series of beauty products including hair masks and concentrates made with the spectacular argan oil. Produced from kernels of the argan tree, they have outstanding anti-aging and nourishing effects on the skin. Argan oil also has exemplary culinary qualities. For any health-conscious readers interested in injecting a little “green beauty” into their beauty regimen, this stall is truly a great find.

Summer’s travel time for the most people,

and its always difficult to know what to pack

and what to bring, so here Ellie Rountree has

a few tips on tech and traveling. Keep in mind

some basic guidelines which can save you

money on data/roaming charges on your cell-

If you enjoyed The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, then you should definitely add his follow-up The Lost Symbol to your summer reading list. While it gets a little theoretical at times, it’s still an adventure novel filled with the secrets, codes, and mysteries which Dan Brown is famous for.

This time around, his hero Professor Robert Langdon finds himself exploring Washington, DC. If you’ve ever visited this city, then you’ll doubly enjoy this book and may even find yourself booking the next flight over as the adventure will make you want to reexamine your vacation photos for any hidden clues! As usual, there’s a romantic love interest, as well as the elusive identity of the villain which is only revealed at the climactic conclusion.

Books like this are much more than popular entertainment because Dan Brown likes to throw out fantastic ideas which will get you thinking…and The Lost Symbol is no exception. Without giving away too much of the plot, it’s safe to say that this book will have you pondering some of the mysteries of the universe and the nature of religion. As serious as these topics are, you’ll still enjoy reading about them because Dan Brown succeeds in humanizing the challenges normal people face when confronted with questions of good vs. evil.

Useful Arabic Words& Pronunciations

Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary by country and region.

Arabic words are constructed from three-letter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. Addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.

lemon līmūn citrus fruit. The lemon was ليمونfirst recorded in literature in a 10th century Arabic treatise on farming, and was also used as an ornamental plant in early Islamic gardens. The cultivation of lemons, limes, and bitter oranges was introduced to the Mediterranean Basin by the Arabs in the Middle Ages.

Hijazi ProverbWant to spice up your Arabic with a proverb? Wrap your mind around this:

“Esaal mijarrib wala tisaal tabeeb.”

Meaning: It is the Arabic version of the English proverb “Experience is the best teacher” and basically means “Ask he who has experience and not a mere doctor”.
