Gough Objective Create a set of policies and recommendations for a mobile phone design that: a) Prioritizes in hypoglycemia intervention and emergency assistance. b) Serves as a useful convenient tool for Type I diabetic patients to improve their glycemic control. Frequency to send BG value to phone: • BG > 70 mg/dL, Every 10 min. • BG ≤ 70 mg/dL, decreasing slowly, Every 5 min. • BG ≤ 70 mg/dL, decreasing 3 – 5 mg/dL per 5 min, Every 2 min. 2. Blood Glucose Meter Finger stick calibration for a reference BG value. 3. Insulin Pump Holds specific amount of insulin for injection. 4. Mobile Phone Serves as main command center. • Receives BG value from glucose sensor. • Sends personal command to pump to inject insulin. • Records received and inputted data. • Synchronize data with online database server. • Assists individual with step-by-step instructions in times of emergency. 5. Aside from the cell phone industry, Abbott’s FreeStyle Navigator® is a CGM device that measures BGL continuously with directional arrows and alarms that warn users ahead of time that they are falling into hypoglycemia. There has not yet been a device that can allow diabetic individuals to monitor their BGL continuously and receive remote assistance in times that they are unconsciously falling into hypoglycemia. Significance • Parents can monitor their diabetic children’s condition from work or when they are not near. • Children snoozing pass their hypoglycemia alarms will alert their parents or emergency contacts for backup. • Individuals will be warned ahead of time to be aware of an emerging hypoglycemic episode to avoid possible complications. • Physicians will always have an updated version of one’s diabetes profile, so adjustments and recommendations can be made at any time.
