FOREWORD

The publication of this bibliography on "Women" is an appro-priate event in that it *closely follows the passage of thelaw which for the first time permits women to enter the Unit6dSf:ates Military Academy in its 173 year.history:

Over 500 titlas are presently extant in the USMA Library col-lection on the subject of Women, representing woman's role inthe past and present. Women are depicted in all walks of lifeincluding.the military. The importance of women in differentcountries and diverse cultures is discussed throughout theliterature and the arts. Emancipation, suffrage, physical andpsychological factors pertaining to women are all reflectedin the writing presented in this bibliography. Finally the .

history of the legal and political rights of women is covered infull. :

You will find books by and about.Susan B. Anthony, HarrietBeeCher Stowe, Jane Addams, Julia Ward.Howe, Simone de Beauvoirnargaret Mead, Germaine Greer, betty Friedan, and many othersincluded in this list. The range of feminist literature coveredby this bibliography reflects the Military Academy's long standinginterest in and concern with the activities of women. The ,

--military history of our nation bears a strong relatiOnShiP-tothe social and economic history of our country. The strengthof women .has added to the evolutiOn of the American way of lifethroughout history and the Army has long recognized the con-tribution they have cede. The current women's movement is alogical progression in the history of our society.'
