Why Are We Here Today?

•  To become familiar with EPRI Smart Grid research and associated technology demonstrations

•  To become familiar with SMLC Smart Manufacturing (SM) platform and associated test beds, their roles and objectives as well as their ongoing demonstration efforts

• Discuss possibilities of bringing these two system-wide platforms together for (1) modeling purposes and (2) for actual deployment

Why Be Involved?

An opportunity for electric utilities to understand the impact of advanced manufacturing.

• Understand new advanced loads, processes and their characteristics as related to novel manufacturing

• Prepare required infrastructure to accommodate these new loads

• Promote sustainable manufacturing and growth through innovative technologies

• Contribute to regional economy by retaining/bringing in jobs in companies that are better positioned for global competition

Workshop Objectives

• To exchange information leading to understanding of key strategies in areas of design, development and implementation of smart factory technology platform and to search for ways to synchronize them with utility-led smart grid activities

• To agree on what organizational and coordination approaches to partnerships are needed to move Smart Grid/Smart Manufacturing Infrastructure forward? What are the specific roles for: EPRI, SMLC, Private sector, Government?

Questions to Discuss Today: • What are the critical technologies, practices, and standards needed to knit and orchestrate together the smart grid and smart manufacturing infrastructures?

• How SM platform can contribute to productivity improvement, energy efficiency improvement?

• What is needed from utility and manufacturing sides to optimize synergies and outcomes? E.g. what are required combined infrastructure, policies, technologies, needed methods/best practices/standards, and outreach.
