Hay muchas imitaciones pero la original Feria de Bodas y Quinceañeras está de regreso.

El evento se llevará a cabo el 4 de marzo, de 12 p.m. a 5 p.m., en el centro comercial Great Mall de Great Plains ubicado en 20700 W. 151 St., Olathe, Kan.

Traída a ustedes por el Grupo Reyes Media, el evento de este año ofrecerá a las futuras novias y quinceañeras la oportunidad de conocer a diferentes vendedores y obtener información para organizar la fiesta de sus sueños.

“Éste es uno de los eventos más populares para la comunidad y esto da a Reyes Media una oportunidad para seguir brindando información y exposición a los negocios para conectarlos con la comunidad”, comentó Lisa Martínez, organizadora del evento.

La exhibición ha atraído a miles de habitantes de Kansas City durante los 6 años que ha sido organizada, ofreciéndoles la oportunidad de ver los servicios relacionados con bodas y fiestas de quince años del área. U.S. president Barack Obama insists he remains “fully com-mitted” to reforming the country’s immigration system.

During an interview with piolin Sotelo on the show “piolin por la Manana” (“Mañana in Spanish), which aired Feb. 22 on La Gran D (1340 AM), piolin asked the president about immi-gration reform, something more than 12 million undocumented immigrants are depending on to help them achieve better lives for themselves and their families. The head of state said he hasn’t been able to produce immigration reform legislation because of a lack of commitment from the U.S. Congress.

“I still have five years to go; we are going to get this done,” said Obama, who requested the Latino community’s support in the 2012 presidential election. “The only way … we are going to get this done is by getting the Congress to do its job.”

Immigration reform has been a controversial political issue, even for the Republican candidates hoping to squash Obama’s bid for a second term. As major news agencies have reported recently, the candidates’ opposition to the proposed Develop-ment, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act has stirred up protests among voters, particularly Latinos.

El Jefe de Estado contestó que no ha podido producir la legislación de reforma migratoria debido a la falta de compromiso del Congreso estadounidense.

“Yo todavía tengo cinco años por delante; vamos a hacer esto”, dijo Obama, quien pidió el apoyo de la comunidad latina en las elecciones presidenciales del 2012. “La única forma … en que vamos a lograrlo es haciendo que el Congreso haga su trabajo”.

La reforma migratoria ha sido un asunto político controversial, aún para los candidatos republicanos que esperan echar por tierra la tentativa de Obama por un segundo período. Ohio shooting leaves three people deadBy Lilia Garcia Jimenez

On Monday (Feb. 27), a shooting took place at Chardon (Ohio) High School, resulting in three deaths.

The students who died were Russell King Jr., Daniel parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin. According to The New York Times, parmertor died Monday, and King and Hewlin died Tuesday.

According to many witnesses, a student came inside the school’s cafeteria and started shooting a group of students who were seated. Immediately, chaos reigned over the cafeteria as students started run-ning and trying to hide.

“I looked up and this kid was pointing a gun about 10 feet away from me at a group of four kids sitting at a table,” a student told CBS News.

CBS News reported that some students ran outside, others ran into a nearby middle school and others locked themselves in a teacher’s lounge.

parents and people outside the school learned about the incident through text messages students were sending to keep people updated.

The FBI reported the suspect was arrested a half-mile from Char-don. The shooter is allegedly a student at Lake Academy, a school for at-risk students.

The name Mary Anderson doesn’t appear on any written driver’s or

pilot’s tests, but her revolutionary contri-bution to motor vehicle operation demands recognition.

A n d e r s o n forever changed t h e d r i v i n g experience for motorists, pilots and passengers by making it safer and easier: She invented the windshield wiper. In 1903, she patented her fan-type “window clean-ing device for electric cars and other vehicles to remove snow, ice or sleet” from the windshield’s exterior surface while remain-ing inside the vehicle.

The top exec-utives of major U.S. companies laughed when Marion Dono-van pitched her invention to

them in 1949, so she started her own company to make reusable diaper covers of waterproof material. In 1951, she sold Donovan Enter-prises for $1 million and took her invention a step farther by replacing cloth diapers with disposable absorbent paper.

Donovan revolutionized infant hygiene.In 1991, U.S. President Bush awarded Ger-

trude Elion, a Nobel Prize laureate for physi-ology or medicine, with a National Medal of Science for her work that had “transformed the world.” Elion developed drugs to treat such conditions as AIDS, bacterial infections, gout, herpes, high blood pressure and heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcers, and immune suppressants to overcome rejection of donated organs in transplant surgery.

It’s impossible to calculate the number of lives and disabilities saved by chemist Stephanie Kwolek. In 1965, Kwolek invented poly-paraphenylene terephatalamide. The ultrastrong, ultralight, flameproof fiber is best known by its brand name: Kevlar. It’s the material used to make life-saving, bullet-resistant vests, combat helmets and about 200 other products, including reinforced walls for storm shelters. Top leaders of the world’s militaries have called Kwolek’s invention revolutionary and one of the most significant in history.

Credit Ruth Graves Wakefield if the aroma of chocolate chip cookies baking has ever tempted you and you’ve tasted their gooey, warm sweetness. In 1933, the Toll House Inn owner invented the chocolate chip. Then, using the chocolate morsels, she created the famous Toll House cookie recipe still printed on Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate chip pack-ages. Wakefield’s culinary delights were renowned in Massachusetts, especially the deserts she served at the inn.

Grace M. Hopper was the first woman to receive the National Medal of Technology on her own – and undeniably, she earned it. The mathematician helped invent the COBOL computer programming language. A rear admiral, she standardized the U.S. Navy’s computer programs and languages. She worked on the Mark I, a calculating device that helped lead to electronic computers. Computer industry leaders and scientists lauded her pioneering work in data pro-cessing.

We also have Hopper to thank for computer “bugs.” She coined the term when a moth trapped in a computer was discovered to be the cause of a circuit malfunction. Hopper’s revolutionary work “opened the door to a significantly larger universe for computer users,” her technology medal citation read.

These inventors offer a few contemporary examples of the long-lasting, far-reaching, grand-scale impact of women on society since prehistoric times. They illustrate why the myriad of women’s contributions worldwide and throughout time belong permanently in the regular course of studies, not only during Women’s History Month.

On Feb. 16, Kansas Rep. Louis Ruiz intro-duced a bill into the Kansas Legislature

as a call for responsible immigration reform resulting from respectful, humane dialogue: the Kansas Compact.

The compact is an outgrowth of the Tequila Party movement. Founded during the summer of 2011, the Tequila Party emerged as a response to growing public and legislative anti-immigrant sentiment. The non-partisan group seeks to empower Hispanics through initiatives such as increasing voter registration and the compact, which details principles to guide the legislature in writing laws that affect undocumented immigrants.

“Tequila spearheaded this (compact) for several years (by) trying to initiate differ-ent states to introduce it,” Ruiz said. “We tried to introduce it last year, but it didn’t go anywhere.”

Readers will probably remember 2011 as the year of the Kansas voter identification law and the potential repeal of in-state tuition for undocumented students. The controversial laws are followed this year by a bevy of new immigration legislation, including a mandate forcing all employers to use E-Verify and another law intended to turn Kansas law enforcement officers into immigration officers, a la Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070.

Ruiz believes the public has had enough.“With (Kansas Secretary of State Kris)

Kobach and people seeing the effects of his legislation, they’re looking for moderation,” he said.

A major reason the discussion on immigra-tion has become tumultuous is that Gov. Sam Brownback has yet to provide clear leadership on the issue, according to Ruiz.

“The governor has sidestepped and walked away from any and all immigration dialogue,” he said. “He said he would not support any

In the absence of a clear path from Brown-back, the compact lays out guidelines for crafting subsequent legislation. Although it’s non-binding, the compact urges legislators to work in a way that keeps families together and encourages economics contributions from all of society’s members. Most notably, it asks that state legislatures refrain from modifying national immigration law and requiring the local police to enforce it.

“It’s pretty excellent, to me,” Ruiz said. “But some people are going to hate it. I mean, I actually heard someone say, ‘This doesn’t mean we’re giving them rights, does it?’ How hateful.”

“You have to make an educated, informed decision – not let your religion guide you – (on this) issue,” he also said. “It’s sad that people come here with a lot of hate in their eyes.”

Discussion on the compact is set to begin soon within the Kansas House of Representatives.

On Feb. 21, La Gran D (1340 AM) hosted a remote broadcast for H&R Block at the

Argentine Community Center located on 2810 Metropolitan Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

During the broadcast, tax experts helped around 75 people file their taxes. According to Sharon Jobe, marketing coordinator, what distinguishes H&R Block from other tax services is skill level.

“We are experts,” Jobe said. “All our tax pre-parers take continuing education classes for tax preparation.”

To recognize its customers and improve cus-tomers’ tax knowledge, H&R Block is hosting a free second-look review through March 10 at its various Kansas City area branches. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.

There are two immigration-related bills under consideration in the Missouri Gen-

eral Assembly.There’s also a movement in Missouri – par-

ticularly among Hispanics – to keep them from getting passed.

One bill is Senate Bill 590, which would require Missouri schools to document the students’ legal status and that of their parents. It also would require law enforcement officers to request docu-ments from people they suspect to be unlawfully present in the country.

The second bill is House Bill 1186. Already passed by the House, this bill would require that the driver’s license test be give in English only and would deny non-English-speakers access to a translator or interpreter while taking the test.

To stop the bills from being passed, the Missouri Immigrants & Refugee Advocates has organized an Advocacy Day on March 6. That day, people will travel to Jefferson City to speak out against the proposals.

“People are invited to go and explain why this is wrong in Missouri,” said Lynda Callon, a Kansas City-based organizer for the event. “We need to explain that we don’t support these bills.”

People also will have chances to visit different elected officials in Jefferson City.

“We are going to receive instructions, so we know how to act and what to do whenever we see our representatives,” said Jose Mejia and Raiza, another Kansas City-based organizers.

They encourage permanent residents, legal residents and citizens to go with them.

“It is very important that people who are legally in the country go and support the movement,” Mejia said. “We need to explain why we think this is wrong.”

Organizers also have requested the support of students and business owners.

At press time, the movement had two full buses going to Jefferson City. However, people who want to go may contact Mejia at (816) 289-2144.

“Se invita a la gente a que vaya y explique por qué esto es malo para Missouri”, dijo Lynda Callon, organizadora del evento en Kansas City. “Necesitamos explicar (a los congresistas) que no apoyamos estos proyectos de ley”.

Las personas también tendrán la oportunidad de visitar a diversos funcionarios electos en Jefferson City.

“Vamos a recibir instrucciones, para que sepamos cómo actuar y qué hacer cuando veamos a nuestros representantes”, informaron José Mejía y Raiza, otros organizadores de Kansas City.

Demián Bichir: ‘Nos toca ganar’

Oscar nominee Demian Bichir: “It is our time”

Editor’s note: The following column was dis-tributed shortly before the Academy Awards

ceremony Sunday (Feb. 26) in Los Angeles. At the time of its distribution, Demian Bichir was a nomi-nee for the Academy Award for Best Actor. French actor Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) won the Oscar for in that category.

Mexico’s Demian Bichir knows great actors don’t take fame too seriously; they’re usually nonchalant and unaffected.

Bichir spent a lot of time joking when we met for two interviews recently. But as I asked about his chances of winning the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday (Feb. 26) for his work in the critically acclaimed film “A Better Life,” he became serious.

“We are going to win this Oscar – and we have to say this across Latin America: It is our time to win,” he said.

On Sunday, Bichir will join fellow nominees – George Clooney (“The Descendants”); Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”); Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”); and Gary Oldman (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) – at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles to find out who will be taking a statue home. In “A Better Life,” Bichir, 48, plays Carlos Galindo, an undocumented immigrant in East Los Angeles working as a gar-dener and trying to raise his son. Bichir gained 25 pounds for the role and learned how to be “invis-ible,” as so many undocumented immigrants in this country tend to be, as they evade detection and deportation while trying to build a life here.

Bichir, the son of Mexican actors Alejandro Bichir and Maricruz Najera, was an immigrant once, moving to New York from Mexico at age 22 to study acting and learn English. To make ends meet, he worked at a Mexican restaurant. “I became the king of guacamole,” he told me, smiling.

He eventually moved to Los Angeles, then back to Mexico after a few years, where he became a star. Bichir has appeared in more than 60 movies, among them the director Steven Soderbergh’s two-part film “Che,” in which Bichir portrayed Cuban leader Fidel Castro; and “Sex, Shame and Tears,” a film that established Bichir as one of his generation’s greatest actors.

(It’s worth noting that there’s a vibrant film industry in Mexico, a troubled country suffering from the effects of drug violence and poverty. Mexican actors, writers, producers and techni-cians often collaborate with the world’s best filmmakers – and this isn’t happening by chance.)

Playing Carlos Galindo in “A Better Life” was fitting for Bichir, who, as with many Latin American artists, is frank about his political views. I asked him if he thought art could affect reality. Might a two-hour film such as “A Better Life,” which realistically depicts the struggles of millions of people in this country, alter the anti-immigrant mood that pervades the United States?

“One hopes that what you do would be beneficial to other people,” he said.

In fact, Bichir explained that he and director Chris Weitz would like to screen the film at the White House.

“It’s important that it be seen by the people who make decisions – and who hold political power,” he said.

Bichir agreed that an opportunity to create immigration reform was squandered in 2009, when Democrats controlled Congress and the White House, leaving about 11 million people in the United States in limbo.

“(President Barack Obama) says he is on our side, but he has ignored us for the last three years,” he said. “He promised a solution – it was a priority in his agenda – yet it hasn’t been accomplished.”

All the attention surrounding Bichir’s Oscar nomination also has amplified his voice regarding politics in Mexico, which is holding presidential elections later this year. Bichir didn’t hide his disappointment with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, whose military-led tactics against the drug cartels have resulted in almost 50,000 deaths.

“It’s evident that this strategy has failed – and the numbers are staggering,” he said.

Speaking about Mexico’s presidential candi-dates, he said “it’s fantastic” the National Action Party (PAN) selected a woman, Josefina Vazquez Mota, to run for president. However, he also agreed it was difficult to explain how Enrique Pena Nieto, the hopeful from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), is leading in the polls, despite his weaknesses and recent missteps. Bichir, however, expressed support for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the candidate from the Party of the Democratic Revolution.

“The people of the PRI already had their chance – and they had it for too many years, as did those of the PAN,” he said. “Now, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador deserves an opportunity.”

As for his own candidacy for the Oscar, Bichir doesn’t hide his inclinations; he wants to win.

I pointed out that Clooney has described Bichir’s performance as “marvelous” and Pitt said Bichir’s acting had been “incredible.” “I bribed them with tequila,” Bichir said with a laugh.

While on the topic of tequila, Bichir joked that he planned to prepare a flask filled with white tequila to take with him to Sunday’s Academy Awards. But will he also be preparing an accep-tance speech, perhaps to be delivered in English and Spanish, just in case?

En dos entrevistas recientes, se la pasó bromeando. Pero no fue broma cuando me dijo que sí creía que podía ganar el Oscar en la categoría de Mejor Actor por su labor en la cinta “A Better Life”.

Eso, para él, es un cambio de actitud. “Lo que pasa es que sí vamos a ganar”, me explicó. “Y hay que decirlo por toda Latinoamérica: nos toca ganar”.

El 26 de Feb., se unirá a sus colegas nominados -- George Clooney (“The Descendants”); Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”); Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) y Gary Oldman (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) -- en el teatro Kodak Los Ángeles, para saber quién será el que se lleve la estatuilla a casa.

En una entrevista, Bichir, con la agilidad de un jardinero trepando palmeras, brinca del cine a la política. Más que un juego, está en su naturaleza y en esa saludable tradición latinoamericana que invita a los artistas a opinar de los políticos.

¿Pueden dos horas de cine cambiar el clima antiinmigrante que vive Estados Unidos? ¿Puede el arte cambiar la realidad?

“Uno desea que lo que hagas sea bueno para otra gente”, respondió. “Queremos llevar la película a la Casa Blanca y que la vean las personas que toman decisiones”.

Bichir sabe que se desaprovechó en el 2009 la oportunidad de legalizar a millones de indocumentados, cuando el partido Demócrata controlaba el Congreso y la Casa Blanca.

“(El presidente Barack Obama) dice que está de nuestro lado, pero nos ha ignorado tres años”.

Con su nominación al Oscar, Bichir se ha convertido en la punta de lanza y orgullo de un nuevo grupo de mexicanos triunfadores. Sabe, también, que esa visibilidad multiplica su voz en otros temas que le duelen. Y México le duele.

Al hablar acerca de los candidatos presidenciales en México, dijo que “es fantástico” que el Partido de Acción Nacional haya seleccionado a una mujer, Josefina Vázquez Mota, para postularse a la presidencia, aunque también estuvo de acuerdo en que era difícil de explicar por qué Enrique Pena Nieto, el aspirante presidencial del Partido Revolucionario Institucional encabeza las encuestas de popularidad, pese a sus debilidades y tropiezos recientes. Bichir expresó, por otra parte, su apoyo para Andrés Manuel López Obrador, el candidato del Partido de la Revolución Democrática.

“Yo tengo que insistir que ya tuvo su chance la gente del PRI y por muchísimos años, también, los del PAN. Ahora merece su oportunidad Andrés Manuel López Obrador”.

¿Cree que el candidato de la izquierda, López Obrador, perdió las elecciones del 2006 por un fraude?

“Yo creo que hubo un ataque mediático muy poderoso que, efectivamente, hizo cambiar de parecer a la gente. Y creo que cambiaron el destino de los votos”.

Sobre el presidente Felipe Calderón tampoco se calla. “Es evidente que la estrategia (contra los narcos) falló y los números son muy crudos”.

Bichir no esconde sus preferencias políticas. Pero es duro para recibir halagos. George Clooney dijo que Bichir está “maravilloso” en el film, y Brad Pitt añadió que su actuación había sido “increíble, increíble”.

Bichir no cayó en ese juego. “Los soborné con tequila”, me dijo, riendo.

Ah, y ya que entramos en ese tema, sí, está pensando llevar una anforita de tequila blanco a la ceremonia de los Oscar este domingo.

“No un garrafón”, aclaró con una mueca. Y está preparando un discurso “para cualquier cosa que pase”.

Quizá -- amenazó -- hasta suelte unas palabras en náhuatl.

Hola:Me llamo Ximena. Les escribo porque tengo

una prima que está en muchos problemas. Ella ha tenido varios tickets por velocidad y ha tenido dos choques de tránsito, pero en el último choque la arrestaron y se la llevaron presa. La familia tuvo que pagar una fianza para que pudiera salir pero después de eso le dieron Corte. Ayer tuvo que presentarse y el abogado que llevaba cerró el caso; y entonces a mi prima le dieron la opción de salir del país y ella la aceptó, pero voluntariamente.

Hoy tenía que volver a la Corte para averiguar qué día y a qué hora tenia que salir del país, pero en ese mismo momento la detuvieron y le pusieron un grillete. Luego la dejaron irse para la casa, pero lo que nosotros queremos saber es si después de todo esto y de haber firmado la orden de deportación se puede hacer algo--si se puede detener la deportación o si se puede apelar y pedir un perdón.

Ella es de Colombia y entró con visa de turista y lleva más de 10 años en el país y tiene una niña de 9 años nacida aquí. Sus padres y hermanos tienen asilo político, pero a ella no la pudieron incluir porque ya

Que lástima que su prima firmó documentos sin hablar con un abogado d e i n m i g r a c i ó n . Parece ser que ella tenía un abogado criminal que no sabe mucho sobre las leyes de inmigración.

Me parece que su prima puede calificar para cancelación de deportación por tener más de 10 años aquí y una hija

norteamericana. También, entró con visa y si tiene novio que es norteamericano, puede legalizarse casándose con él.

On March 23, 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama

signed the Affordable Care Act to offer Americans better healthcare.

In 2012, Americans are still debating its benefits – and problems.

Some components took effect in 2010; however, the implementation of the entire law won’t take place until 2014. Components that are

already established include a 50 percent discount for brand-name drugs covered by Medicare Part D, a provision to allow children to stay on their parents’ healthcare plan until age 26 and insur-ance plans that offer new options for people with pre-existing conditions who’ve been insured for six months or more. In 2014, the pre-existing condi-tion insurance’s policy clause will be eliminated.

Those who support the legislation include Mayra Alvarez, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services director of public health policy. According to Alvarez, the legislation “will allow the expansion of health insurance, (be able) to set ground rules in healthcare matters and to expand the Medicaid coverage.”

Alvarez believes the law will be particularly beneficial to Latinos.

“Latinos are facing some of the toughest (health) challenges – and this law makes healthcare more affordable (for them),” she said.

In addition, Alvarez believes the legislation will make “an impact in health disparities” between Latinos and non-Latinos. Several reports have indicated that Latinos tend to be less conscientious about taking care of their health than other ethnic groups, prompting Latino healthcare activists to stress to the Latino community the importance of getting preventive checkups and to educate the community on healthcare matters.

With the implementation of the law, 54 million people have received access to free preventive services, including 6 million Latinos. The preven-tive services are in keeping with a goal the federal government hopes to achieve.

“We are trying to reform healthcare by taking care of patients as a whole,” Alvarez said.

On Feb. 9, the Duchesne Clinic hosted a reception to honor contributions from both

individuals and organizations to Caritas Clinics.Caritas is a community healthcare organiza-

tion servicing primarily low-income communities through Duchesne in Kansas City, Kan.; and St. Vincent in Leavenworth, Kan.

Amy Falk, executive director; and Curt Sulley, board chairperson, presented this year’s hon-orees: Tom White, Leavenworth Commissioner Clyde Graeber, Providence Medical Center and Hallmark Cards Inc.

White received the Sister Rosalie Mahoney Award. During his tenure as chairperson, he helped the executive director fulfill the clinics’ mis-sion and assisted in coordinating the volunteers, although he couldn’t say when he had started helping out.

“I know I stepped down in 2010, but I couldn’t tell you when I started,” White said. “It’s been some time.”

Beginning as a Caritas volunteer, White’s commitment to the clinic grew after watching the organization work.

“They do a terrific job,” he said. “There’s a certain magic in it. Even though sometimes employees will feel underappreciated or we’ll

feel worn out, when the time comes to actually fulfill the mission, the volunteers and staff will always come together and work wonderfully.”

Since stepping down as a chairperson, White has been absent because of his wife’s death. However, he’s looking forward to getting more involved in the coming months.

Graeber won the Community Servant Award. His numerous contributions to Caritas include spearheading the push to enter a new building.

The winners will officially receive their awards during the annual Caritas Cel-ebrates gala, which will be held April 14 at the KCI Expo Center.

The Caritas Clinics have operated for 25 years. Although only a handful of staff mem-bers work at the clin-ics full or part time, the clinics are sup-ported by a robust group of volunteers, who collectively serve a 3,000 patient load during their roughly 18,000 visits. The clinics specialize in treating chronic disease. Most of their patients seek attention for diabetes and high blood pres-sure.

Descripción: Un buen caso para la coestrella Dwayne Johnson haciendo más números musicales.

Aproximadamente a la mitad de esta película familiar de acción inconsistente, Johnson canta “What a Wonderful World”, el clásico popular que hizo famoso el fallecido cantante y trompetista Louis Armstrong. Presentado con una gracia suave y relajante, es quizá el mejor momento de este relato de un padrastro (Johnson) que acompaña a su hijastro Sean (Josh Hutcherson), a un piloto de helicóptero (el puertorriqueño Luís Guzmán) y a la hija del piloto (Vanessa Hudgens) a una isla remota que es una mezcla de los mundos representados por los autores Julio Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson y Jonathan Swift.

Es tentador menospreciar a Johnson como un artista debido a su constitución imponente y a su pasado profesional en las luchas. Pero claramente, los golpes cuerpo a cuerpo y el saltar de las cuerdas no son las únicas habilidades de Johnson. Quizá debería hacer una comedia musical.

En lo que respecta al resto del filme, nuevamente, es un golpe y error. En el lado positivo, se establece rápido el ritmo y tiene unas líneas agradables. Además, Sir Michael Caine es un gozo como el abuelo de Sean, una aventurero de toda la vida que vive en una isla remota del Sur del Pacífico.

Por otro lado, los efectos especiales desiguales hacen difícil el permanecer absorto en un mundo isleño donde la ciudad perdida de Atlantis existe, donde las abejas son del tamaño de los elefantes y donde los elefantes son del tamaño de los Chihuahuas. Adicionalmente, la trama de amor y odio entre Hutcherson y Hudgens se siente forzada porque no hay química entre ellos. Y Guzmán se merece algo mejor que interpretar a un compañero asustado.

¿Debería verla?: Solamente como una matinée. Debido a las fallas antes mencionadas, no vale la pena pagar un precio superior para verla. Pero vale la pena verla por Johnson, quien conduce “Journey 2”.

También vale la pena verla por el corto animado antes de ésta: “Daffy’s Rhapsody.” Presentando imágenes generadas por computadora del pato Daffy y Elmer Fudd, “Daffy’s Rhapsody” posee un ritmo increíble, música alegre y el humor de los dibujos animados clásicos de Warner Bros.

Hey, tal vez Dwayne Johnson debería trabajar con Daffy y Elmer alguna vez – dado que canta y baila.

Movie: “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (rated PG).

Describe it: A good case for co-star Dwayne Johnson doing more musical numbers.

Roughly midway through this inconsistent family action film, Johnson sings “What a Wonderful World,” the pop classic made famous by the late singer and trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Performed with a smooth, soothing grace, it’s easily the best moment in this tale of a stepfather (Johnson) who accompanies his stepson Sean (Josh Hutcherson), a helicopter pilot (native Puerto Rican Luis Guzman) and the pilot’s daughter (Vanessa Hudgens) to a remote island that’s a blend of the worlds depicted by authors Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jonathan Swift.

It’s tempting to underrate Johnson as an entertainer because of his imposing build and professional wrestling past. But clearly, body slams and jumping off turnbuckles aren’t John-son’s only skills. He has a solid feel for comedy, as he has shown as a guest host of the TV show “Saturday Night Live” and in supporting roles in such movies as “Get Smart” and “The Other Guys.” And he has a nice singing voice, as he shows in “Journey 2” (look for some of his “Saturday Night Live” clips on Hulu.com to see further evidence of his knack for being a song-and-dance man). Maybe he should do a musical comedy.

As for the rest of film, again, it’s hit-and-miss. On the positive side, it’s briskly paced and has some enjoyable one-liners. Moreover, Sir Michael Caine is enjoyable as Sean’s grandfa-ther, a longtime adventurer who lives on the remote South Pacific island.

On the other hand, the uneven special effects make it difficult to stay engrossed in an island world where the lost city of Atlantis exists, where honeybees are the size of elephants and where elephants are the size of Chihuahuas. In addition, the hate-to-love subplot between Hutcherson and Hudgens feels forced because there’s no chemistry between the two. And Guzman deserves better than playing a scared sidekick.

Should I see it?: Only as a matinee. Because of the aforementioned flaws, it’s not worth paying a premium price to see it. But it’s worth seeing because of Johnson, who carries “Journey 2.”

It’s also worth seeing because of the ani-mated short before it: “Daffy’s Rhapsody.” Featuring computer-generated images of Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd, “Daffy’s Rhapsody” pos-sesses the amazing pacing and spirited music and humor of the classic ink-and-paint Warner Bros. cartoons.

Hey, maybe Dwayne Johnson should work with Daffy and Elmer sometime – provided he sings and dances.

Los Comets golearon en su último partido de la temporada regular con una gran actuación del delantero mexicano

Byron Álvarez quien fue la estrella del partido tras sumar 6 goles y un total de13 puntos ante su próximo rival en semifinales, la Ola de Milwaukee.

Milwaukee, el actual campeón de la MISL (Liga Profesional de Salón) abrió el marcador con dos goles, por parte de Oliveiro y Greenfield.

Los Comets empataron el encuentro por producto de Álvarez quien anotó 2 goles a pase de Geison Moura, líder de puntos de la liga.

El único tanto del segundo cuarto lo hizo el defensa de los Comets Stokic, por lo que los locales se fueron al descanso arriba en el marcador, 6 a 4.

Los Comets iniciaron el tercer cuarto con 3 goles en 5 minutos, 2 de Álvarez y uno de Geison Moura. Esta actuación comenzó a marcar una ventaja de 12 a 4 a favor de Kansas City sobre Milwaukee, ventaja que eventualmente se convertiría en goleada.

Milwaukee trató de volver a la acción y apretar el partido con un gol de Oliveiro, pero Neto acabó con las esperanzas del campeón cuando consiguió dos goles al final del tercer cuarto y al inicio del último, con lo que los locales ya llevaban una ventaja de 16 a 6.

Los Comets cerraron la temporada regular con un récord de 15 partidos ganados y 9 perdidos, jugarán las semifinales de la liga en una serie de dos partidos ante Miwaukee, primero en el Centro de Eventos Independence el próximo 9 de marzo; y el partido de vuelta será el 11 de marzo en Milwaukee.

REAPARICIÓN TRIUNFAL DEL “TRAVIESO” ARCE

El “Travieso” Arce reapareció y cumplió en su primera pelea del 2012 tras noquear al venezolano Lorenzo Parra.

Jorge Arce aseguró que saldría a buscar el nocaut y cumplió su palabra en Mexicali al vencer a su adversario en el quinto round.

En base a sus combinaciones a las partes blancas el “Travieso” forjó su triunfo y en dos ocasiones mandó a Parra a la lona en el tercer round cuando parecía que el combate llegaba a su fin.

El boxeador argentino Sergio “Maravilla “ Martínez quiere pelear con el mexicano Julio César Chávez Jr. y quitarle no sólo su marca invicta sino exhibir sus limitaciones porque considera que es un boxeador mediocre.

Claro y directo como acostumbra, Martínez se quejó de tantas vueltas para concretar este combate que ha sido declarado obligatorio por el Consejo Mundial de Boxeo.

“Hay algo que está claro: Chavez no quiere pelear conmigo. Su promotor Bob Arum no quiere que peleé conmigo, ni su entrenador Freddy Roach lo desea.
