FROM THE DIRECTORWelcome to the 2015-2016 Season presented by the Doudna Fine Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University! We are pleased to offer a diverse roster of touring artists performances as well as productions, performances, and exhibitions from the EIU Art, Music, and Theatre Arts Departments and collaborative exhibitions with the Tarble Arts Center.

The Doudna Fine Arts Center also hosts the EIU Center for the Humanities presentations, the Lions in Winter Literary Festival, and the EIU Dancers shows. With any publication, this brochure includes details of those events available at the time it was printed. Updates, new events, and changes to any event can be found at our website (www.eiu.edu/doudna) and we encourage you to check there often so you don’t miss anything.

Check out page 26 of this brochure for more information about the Center and what to expect when you attend any event in the building. There’s something else you should know in preparation for attending --- we encourage you to bring some cash along, especially when you attend one of our Premier touring artists events. The artists often have merchandise available for purchase and we wouldn’t want you to go home empty handed. Also, we’re hoping to offer concessions during some of these performances, which will be available on a cash-only basis. The availability of light food items, desserts, and something refreshing to drink has been on ongoing request from our audiences; we’re working on it.

We appreciate your feedback on anything related to your attendance at a Doudna Fine Arts Center event. It’s easy to do, and here’s how: 1.) Find me or any of our Center staff at the event and speak with us personally; 2.) Call my office at 217.581.8513; 3.) Email me at [email protected]

Thanks for your attendance at, and support for, Doudna Fine Arts Center events. We’ll see you soon!

THE MOOREBROTHERS BAND

Most folks are taken aback when they first see Jacob (mandolin, banjo, and fiddle, 17), Daniel (bass, 21) and Isaac (guitar, 12). Don’t let their fresh faces fool you; this trio means business. Together, they weave a musical tapestry that honors tradition and welcomes progress…melding a love of tone and harmonies with a fiery stage energy that wins over even the most jaded listeners, while keeping music lovers on the edge of their seat.

The Moore Brothers Band features a combination of bluegrass, gospel, country, and even a touch of the blues. In the short time they’ve been together they’ve recorded two cds and played MerleFest, Midnight Jam, the MAAC, Dollywood, Martin Guitar Company Showcase at Robert’s Western World in Nashville, The NAMM Show, OBX Bluegrass Festival, IBMA

showcase and countless other shows across the Southeast, averaging about 50 shows a year. They were recently featured in a Pam Tillis video and performed at a CMA awards night after party with Collin Ray and John Berry.

POWER GOESTHE SELDOMS

Wednesday, October 7, 2015Pre-Show Presentation6:30 – 7:15 p.m.Lecture Hall (Free, no ticket required)

Mainstage Performance7:30 p.m.The Theatre$15/$12/$7

“Power Goes,” a new multidisciplinary work by The Seldoms explores the nature of political power and its relationship to social action and change. The piece draws upon the figure of President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) as both a subject and metaphor for a broader inquiry about power and its meaning throughout history. “Power Goes” positions the protest culture and back-door maneuverings of LBJ’s America with today’s social and political gridlock through the Seldoms’ signature ensemble work of gestural precision, humor, athleticism, and sheer force.

Pre-Show presentation: “How To Get Power: The Seldoms Dance with LBJ” by dramaturg Michael J. Kramer, Visiting Assistant Professor, History and American Studies, Northwestern University.

www.theseldoms.org

The presentation of “Power Goes” by The Seldoms was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additinal support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET THEATREDIRECT FROM MOSCOW, RUSSIAIN A PRODUCTION OF SWAN LAKE

Monday, January 18, 20167:30 p.m.The Theatre$15/$12/$7

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with more than 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception.

JASON MARSALIS AND THE VIBES QUARTETOPENING THE 57TH ANNUAL EIU JAZZ FESTIVAL

Friday, February 5, 20167:30 p.m.The Theatre$15/$12/$7

Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and Ellis comprise New Orleans’s venerable first family of jazz, and earned a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award in 2011. Jason is well known for his prodigal drumming. Working with his father’s group, as well as the great pianist Marcus Roberts, he has fine-tuned his playing in two of the most demanding trio settings in modern jazz. However, with the release of 2013’s “In A World of Mallets”, and his recognition as the 2013 rising star winner in the Downbeat Magazine’s annual critics poll, listeners are recognizing Jason for his unique sound on the vibraphone.

The concert features an opening set from the EIU Jazz Ensemble and a full performance by Jason Marsalis and the Vibes Quartet.

Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade. Folk Roots magazine has rightly termed them an “Irish music dream team.”

In Tim O’Brien’s music, things come together. O’Brien’s presence - be it as a bandleader, songwriter, mentor, instrumentalist or vocalist - has been strongly felt not only in his own rich music, but in the many recordings of his songs by such artists as the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Kathy Mattea, the New Grass Revival and the Seldom Scene, and in his recorded collaborations with Steve Martin, the Chieftains and innumerable others. Most recently, O’Brien has been performing before capacity crowds in the band of Mark Knopfler, who described O’Brien as

“a master of American folk music, Irish music, Scottish music - it doesn’t matter; a fine songwriter and one of my favorite singers.”

2015-16 TARBLE HUMANITIES EXHIBITIONEDGAR DEGAS: THE PRIVATE IMPRESSIONIST - WORKS ON PAPER BY THE ARTIST AND HIS CIRCLE Aug. 15 – Nov. 1, Main Galleries, Tarble Arts Center

RECEPTION & GALLERY TALKWITH MARY CAROLINE SIMPSONFriday, Oct. 9, 6-8 p.m., Tarble Arts Center Co-sponsored by the Academy of Lifelong Learning

Featuring drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs from a private collection, this exhibition endeavors to illuminate the background and personality of Degas as an individual, while also presenting his genius as an artist. The subject matter of the works is often personal: in addition to three rare self-portraits, the collection includes depictions of family members and friends. Works touch upon three notable themes within his oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and the ballet. Enriching the exhibition are a selection of more than forty works on paper by well-known artists, many of whom were friends of Degas, including Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Gustave Moreau, Alfred Stevens, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

The exhibition was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA in association with Denenberg Fine Arts, West Hollywood, CA. This exhibition is made possible by the Tarble Arts Center Major Art and Artists Exhibitions Endowment in the EIU Foundation. As the 2015-16 Tarble Humanities Exhibition, Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist is presented in cooperation with the EIU Center for the Humanities.

He has been awarded residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, The Chateau in Rochefort-en-Terre, France, Spiro Arts in Park City, Utah, and the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico. October 1, 2, 3 • 7:30 p.m.October 2, 3, 4 • 2 p.m. Black Box Theatre, $12 / $10 / $5

Over the course of a 90-minute parent/teacher conference, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher engage in a fraught conversation about the tragic suicide of Gidion, the mother’s son and the teacher’s student. for Gidion’s act as well come to terms with their excruciating feelings of culpability.

“a particularly eloquent study of people caught between the competing demands of reason, morality and family…harrowing…a narrative that is as elegant as it is chilling.” - Washington Post.

Gidion’s Knot is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York

October 2 matinee performance is in support of the EIU-BVC Bullying Prevention Conference.

There will be an audience talkback immediately following the October 2 evening performance.

THE DOUDNA – A SHORT HISTORYThe Doudna Fine Arts Center was named for Quincy Doudna, President of EIU from 1956-1971. The original Doudna Fine Arts Center served the Music, Art, and Theatre Departments for many years until a stunning renovation re-opened it in 2008. It now boasts nearly 250,000 square feet of fine arts space with four performance venues, a lecture hall, various rehearsal spaces, faculty offices, practice areas, classrooms, and much more. Designed by architect Antoine Predock (www.predock.com) , the new Doudna Fine Arts Center stands as a commitment to the arts and to the people of east central Illinois. Watching over the Doudna is Attendant Spirit by Ruth Duckworth, the sculpture inviting all to partake in the glory of artistic creation and presentation.

NEW + EMERGING ARTISTS SERIESWith the new Doudna Fine Arts Center emerged a new programming fund called the New + Emerging Artists Series (NEAS) Endowment fund. Infused with substantial local contributions, the NEAS has expanded the abilities of the Doudna and its departments to attract diverse educational and performance opportunities into the center. Guests funded by the NEAS endowment fund are indicated throughout the brochure. The NEAS endowment fund is an open fund, available for anyone to contribute to it at anytime. For more information on the fund and how to participate, contact Dwight Vaught, Director at 217.581.8513 or email [email protected].
