One of my earliest memories is of kneeling next
to my grandmother in her church, where I was
warmed by the light of her faith. I was not raised
Catholic, so I paid close attention as she clasped the black
and silver rosary in the palm of her right hand and held it
to her forehead during Mass. Outside of church, I would
occasionally see her pause to
slip her hand in the pocket of
her apron to fi nger those same
beads. I knew she carried a
great sadness from losing
two sons in World War II; I
knew, too, she found solace
when she connected to God
through her sacred beading.
Nine years later, when she
was diminished and frail
from colon cancer, she drew
strength as she silently and
privately thumbed her way
through the rosary.
When my grandmother
died, I inherited her rosary.
Thus began my collection
of sacred prayer beads.
Greek worry beads and
Native American beads
were soon added and, as it
became fashionable, I began
making my own. More than the string of colors and
the connection to something larger than myself, it was
the repetition and inward movement I loved. I was an
active child, quick of mind, and the only time I could
sit still without fi dgeting was when I concentrated on
my beading. It was an act of ceaseless prayer, my fi rst
journey into the Silence.
Circle of Life
“Most of the world’s spiritual traditions use prayer
beads as a tool to link the inner and outer realms and
provide a focus for settling into prayer at depth; prayer
beads are a tangible reminder of the divine circle of life
of which you are a most treasured part,” says Rev. Pam
Douglas-Smith, senior minister of Unity Church of Port
Townsend, Washington, who recently gave a talk on
“Rosary and Luminous Mysteries.”
“Whether you use
Catholic rosary beads,
Buddhist mala beads, Islamic
masbaha beads, Hindu
aksamala beads, or simply
a strand you make that
emerges from your creative
spirit, I encourage everyone
to consider incorporating this
practice,” says Smith.
Prayer beads have long
been a pathway to meditation
and spirituality and are used
in many faith traditions.
According to Gray Henry
and Susannah Marriott in
their book Beads of Faith:
Pathways to Meditation and
Spirituality Using Rosaries,
Prayer Beads and Sacred
Words, the etymology of the
word bead is signifi cant,
deriving from both the
Sanskrit buddh, which refers to self-realization—Buddha
being the Enlightened One—and from the Saxon word
bidden, which means “to pray.”
Although the type, number and grouping of beads may
differ among traditions, many of the rituals are universal.
A mantra or prayer is often repeated as one moves the
beads through one’s hands. Like concentrating on the
breath, this helps the individual center the mind and
escape the mindless chatter of the brain, moving into the
center of the heart to connect with the divine.
Author Elizabeth Gilbert divided her book Eat, Pray,
Love into 108 sections to represent the 108 beads of the
