Today’s Readings—The story of David and Saul in today’s First Reading functions almost like a parable. Showing mercy to his deadly foe, David gives a concrete example of what Jesus expects to become a way of life for His disciples. The new law Jesus gives in today’s Gospel would have us all become “Davids”—loving our enemies, doing good to those who would harm us, extending a line of credit to those who won’t ever repay us. The Old Law required only that the Israelites love their fellow countrymen (see Leviticus 19:18). The new law Jesus brings makes us kin to every man and woman (see also Luke 10:29–36). His kingdom isn’t one of tribe or nationality. It’s a fami-ly. As followers of Jesus, we’re to live as He lived among us—as “children of the Most High” (see Luke 6:35; 1:35). As sons and daughters, we want to walk in the ways of our heavenly Father, to “be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Grateful for His mercy, we’re called to forgive others their trespasses be-cause God has forgiven ours. In the context of today’s liturgy, we’re all “Sauls”— by our sinfulness and pride we make ourselves enemies of God. But we’ve been spared a death we surely deserved to die because God has loved and shown mercy to His enemies, “the ungrateful and the wicked,” as Jesus says. Jesus showed us this love in His Passion, for-giving His enemies as they stripped Him of cloak and tunic, cursed Him and struck Him on the cheek, condemned Him to death on a cross (see Luke 22:63–65; 23:34). “He redeems your life from destruction,” David reminds us in today’s Psalm. That’s the promise, too, of today’s Epistle: that we who believe in the “last Adam,” Jesus, will rise from the dead in His image, as today we bear the image of the “first Adam,” who by his sin made God an enemy and brought death into the world (see 1 Corinthians 15:21–22). Family Preparation for Sundays Sunday, February 24—Jesus continues to chal-lenge us by saying to love our enemies. It’s easy to love those who love us, but difficult to love those who don’t love or even like us. Do it anyway. It can be painful but Jesus promises our reward will be great, not in this world but in heaven. Aim for heavenly treasure and love everyone. Sunday, March 3—It’s so easy to see the sin in others yet we justify the sin in our own lives. If you want to truly be a disciple of Jesus, first weed out sin in your life. Others will not listen to your advice on being a good Christian when they see you liv-ing in disobedience to the faith.

The Order of Malta is pleased to sponsor this Mass for Catholics of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, with priests from both dioceses concele-brating. Archbishop Naumann will be the Principal Celebrant and Bishop Johnston will deliver the homily. This Mass with anointing of the sick, simi-lar to celebrations in Lourdes, France, will be at 10 am, Saturday, March 23, at Curé of Ars Church, 94th and Mission Road, Leawood. Church is espe-cially accessible for those with mobility concerns. Prior to Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 8:45 to 9:30 am. What Great News! Veronica Fernandez of the Catholic Charities Food Pantry contacted our parish Chairperson for the Food Drive, Paula Frost, recently with great news! Our parish collected 2,094 pounds of food which is really amazing for a parish of our size! She also thanks everyone for organizing and sort-ing donations which saved them time. The Food Truck will return April 6-7. Let's beat this record!
Runnin’ Revs Game March 4
All are invited to cheer on their favorite priest at the Runnin’ Revs vs. Serra All Stars basketball game played at Bishop Miege High School at 7 pm on Monday, March 4. The Revs will challenge 8th grade and high school youth from our Catholic schools in this exciting game of basketball. Bring family and friends to enjoy this fun event with cheerleaders, a pep band and concessions. Dona-tions collected will benefit seminarians.
