SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMSHonors Program for highly-motivated students with high levels of academic achievement. Freshman-year program for all new freshmen to help them make the transition into university life. Center for Learning Resources offers free tutoring for students seeking extra help with their studies.
INTERNSHIPSOur location in New Haven and proximity to New York City and Hartford allow us to offer internships with a wide variety of busi-nesses, government, and non-profit agencies, including ESPN, MTV, Disney, FBI Crime Labs, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, Unilever, and United Technologies Corporation, among others.
RESIDENTIAL LIFEMaking you feel at home is a priority at UNH. Our on-campus hous-ing is available in eight residence halls. Residential Life staff mem-bers live in each hall and help promote an atmosphere conducive to study and social interaction among students. Residence Hall Councils, composed of students elected by their peers, plan social and recreational activities and serve as representatives for students living in each hall. Room accommodations range from traditional residence halls (equipped with a fitness room and campus conve-nience store) to multi-bedroom, apartment-style residences.

assistantfortheFairfieldUniversitywomen’ssoccerteam.Duncanwas responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program,recruitingandgame-dayandpracticecoordination.
WhileatFairfield,theStagsweretwicecrownedtheMetroAtlanticAthletic Conference (MAAC) Champions (2005& 2008) andadvancedtotheNCAADivisionITournament.Duncanalsomentoredtwo MAAC Players of the Year for the Stags.
A2005graduateofCentralConnecticutStateUniversity,Duncanwas a four-year letterwinner for the BlueDevils. AftergraduatingfromFairfieldin2010withasamajorinMarket-ingandaManagementminor,FrobeyplayedwithAskerFKinNorway.

2012 SEASON OUTLOOKAfter being left out of the Northeast-10 Conference Tour-namentbyasinglepointinthestandingslastseason,theNew Haven women’s soccer team takes the pitch this fall eyeingareturntothepostseasonandtoprominenceasaregional power.
LauraDuncan,thefirstheadcoachinprogramhistorytopostawinningrecordineachofherfirsttwoseasonswiththeChargers,hasassembledagroupof18returnersandsevennewcomersforherthirdcampaignonthesidelinesatKayoField.
Offensively,theChargerswelcomebackfiveoftheirtopsixpointscorersfromlastseason,includingsophomoremidfielderAmberSimms,wholedtheclubwithsixgoalsand14totalpointsin2011.Simmswasrecognizedregion-allyasaNEWISADivisionIISecondTeamAll-NewEnglandhonoreeinadditiontoconferencelaurelsasaThirdTeamAll-Northeast-10andAll-RookieTeampick.
NEWISADivisionIIFirstTeamAll-NewEnglandselectionLucyFranciscoandSecondTeamchoiceMonicaYanez,whoalsoearnedaThirdTeamAll-Northeast-10distinction,willreturntothefrontline.Franciscoscoredfourgoalswith10totalpointslastfallandentersherseniorcam-paignranked11thall-timeincareergoals(16)and13thincareerpoints(41)inprogramhistory.Yanezwastheteamleaderwithfiveassistsinhersophomoreseasonandalsoscoredthegame-winninggoalintheChargers’1-0blank-ingofBentleyduringconferenceplay.
MidfielderNicolePacapellinotchedthreegoalsandstartedall 17 matches as a freshman, while classmate Courtney Marraaddedtwotalliesaswellasanassistduringherrookiecampaign.JuniorsTamiVargasandAlexaSeidenfeldalsofoundthenetlastseason.
TheattackwillbesupplementedbyjuniorAlyssaZargosandincomingfreshmenAshleyDawson,MarisaGarciaandEmily Hoffman.
TheChargers’backrowboaststhreedefenderswhostart-edall17matcheslastseason:seniorsDanielleIaconoandLaurenPrimovicandjuniorHeatherTimmons.FellowjuniorAmandaHathawaystarted16matchesontheNewHavendefensiveend,andgraduatestudentAliEspañolhastakenthe pitch for 55 career matches in a Charger uniform.
SpellingthedefensivestartersinboththebackrowandthemidfieldwillbereturnersHannahAllen,ShelbiGui-mondandJennDobrodziejaswellasnewcomersKaylaBrewer,BeccaSierejko,MirandaSmithandTaylorSzyarto.
Thebiggestvacancytobefilledwillbebetweentheposts,as Duncan looks to replace goalkeeper Kim Taylor ’12. Taylor,whoplayedeveryminuteinnetfortheChargersineachofthelasttwocampaigns,graduatedrankedsecondinprogramhistoryincareergoals-againstaverageandgoalkeeperminutesplayed.
NatashaPurchlaandMoriahSaidel,bothsophomoreswhospentlastseasonbehindTaylor,willcompeteduringthepreseasonforstartinggoalkeeperduties.
TheroadthroughtheNortheast-10ConferencecontainsasizeableroadblockinSaintRose,thedefendingNationalChampions who return the NSCAA National Player of the Year,CarmelinaPuopolo.AdditionalNE-10foesMassachu-setts-LowellandMerrimackbothqualifiedfortheNCAATournament in 2011, while non-conference opponent Dowl-ingalsoadvancedtothenationalpostseason.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division IIconference thatwasestablishedin 1979. The NE-10 consists of 16 member institutions that are located throughoutthe Northeast including Connecticut,Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York andVermont.
The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.),American InternationalCollege (Springfield,Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), FranklinPierceUniversity(Rindge,N.H.),LeMoyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), MerrimackCollege (NorthAndover,Mass.),University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College(Easton, Mass.).
The 16member institutions are spreadgeographically from Syracuse, New York to Boston,MassachusettsandfromBurlington,VermonttoLongIsland,NewYork.Manyofthemembersare located inor around themetropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, New Haven,Worcester,andNewYork.
TheConferencemostrecentlywelcomedtheUniversityofNewHavenin2008andAdelphiUniversity in2009, adding to thepowerfulunion of strong academic and athleticcollegesanduniversities.
The Northeast-10 has evolved into amembership committed to competitiveathletics programs that emphasize theeducationonandoffthefieldofitsmorethan5,500studentathletes.
Countedamongthemanyaccomplishmentsof our institutions are NCAA Division II National Championshipsinwomen’sbasketball,fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse,
men’s soccer,women’s track& field, andmen’sandwomen’sswimming&diving.
This past year, 47 teams representing the Northeast-10 saw their name on NCAA selection days as Division II nationalchampionshipfieldswereannounced. The47 teams represented fourteen differentinstitutions.
During the 2010-2011 academic year,twoNortheast-10 teams claimednationaltitles,asUMassLowellwonthefieldhockeychampionshipandAdelphiwonthewomen’slacrossenational crown. Indivudally,NewHaven’sShannonGagnewonfivenationaltitles at the indoor andoutdoor trackandfieldchampionshipmeets,Stonehill’sCoreyThomas was the national champion in the high jump, and Southern Connecticut’sAmandaThomastookhomethegoldmedalinthe200-yardindividualmedleyattheNCAASwimmingandDivingChampionships.
The Saint Rose women’s soccer team also claimed its first national championship in2011.
Fromthefieldofplaytotheclassroom,theNortheast-10honoredanumberofstudent-athletesfortheiracademicaccomplishments.Theconferencehonoredcloseto200student-athletesthroughouttheyearthatexcelledatahighlevelonthefieldandintheclassroomasmembersoftheacademicallconferenceteams.Additionally,2,917student-athletesrepresenting each of the sixteen schools earneda3.0GPAorhigherandwerenamedto the Commissioner’s Honor Roll last year.
Today’sNortheast-10Conference remainsfocused on complementing the academicintegrity and missions of the memberinstitutionswithacommitment toabroad-basedchampionshipprogram,asevidencedby the 23 sports the Conference offers in championship play, the most of any Division II conference.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation
Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSincebecoming president ofthe University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D.hasledtheUniversityofNewHaven througha periodof remarkable growth anddevelopment. In thepast fiveyears alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduateand graduate students,who
hailfrom35statesandsome45countries.Full-timeundergraduateenrollmenthasgrownby59percentandapplicationshaveincreasedby176percent.Duringthistime,theUniversityhascompletedover$100millionin construction projects andhas launched15newacademicprograms.
UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universitiesintheNorthandboastsnationallyrankedprograms in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, andthe liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of hiscontributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan wasnamed “Businessmanof theYear”byBusinessNewHavenmagazinein2008.
PresidentKaplanalsowasawardedthe2011WilliamM.BurkePresidentialAwardforExperientialEducationby theNational Society for Experiential Education.Theaward recognizesPresidentKaplan’s efforts tomakeUNHanationalleaderinexperientialeducation,requiringeveryundergraduatestudenttocompleteaninternship,anacademicservicelearningexperience,international study or a faculty-mentored research
projectbeforegraduation.
Previously,Dr.KaplanwaschancellorandprofessorofEnglish at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginiaandoneofthenation’sbestpubliccolleges,accordingtoU.S.News&WorldReport.
Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at theUniversity ofMaryland,EuropeanDivision. From1985-1989, he servedasVisitingLecturerinAmericanStudiesatEberhard-KarlsUniversität, Tübingen,Germany–oneof theoldestandmosthighlyregardeduniversitiesinEurope.Aftercompleting his doctoral studies at Eberhard-KarlsUniversität, he returned to theU.S. to teachEnglishattheUniversityofSouthernColorado.Withinthreeyears,hewasmadedepartmentchair,servinginthatcapacity for two years before becoming Director of the CenterforInternationalStudies.
Dr.KaplanalsoservedasdeanofArtsandHumanitiesatSUNYCollegeatBuffaloandasDeanoftheCollegeofLiberalArtsandSciencesatButlerUniversity.
In addition to earning his Ph.D. in ComparativeLiteratureat Eberhard-KarlsUniversität,Dr.KaplanholdsaMasterofArtsdegree(withaconcentrationinphilosophy,GermanandEnglish)fromEberhard-KarlsUniversität andaBachelor of Arts degree from theUniversity of California at Los Angeles.
Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction,publishedbytheUniversityof
SouthCarolinaPress;andananthologyofinternationalwar stories, published by the University Press ofColorado.Healsohaswrittenanumberofscholarlyessays.
Dr.Kaplanandhiswife,AnemoneSchweizer-Kaplan,are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroomdance,hikeanddownhillski.Theyshareagreatloveforthevisualandperformingartsandhavetraveledtomore than 30 countries during their 35 yearstogether,includingTanzania,wheretheyhikedupMt.Kilimanjaro.Theyhaveasonandthreedaughters.
Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe storeownerandanactress-comedienne.Hesaidhisstepfather,IrvingGlovin,taughthimtoloveideasandappreciate thecontributionsweallneed tomake togoodcauses. IrvGlovinwasagood friendofOskarSchindler,was instrumental in getting the story outin book and film form (hewas associate producerof thefilm),and isPresidentof theOskarSchindlerHumanitarianFoundation.Dr.KaplanalsoservesontheboardoftheFoundation.
Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in SouthwestGermany.SheholdstheequivalentofanAmericanM.A.inSecondaryEducationandtaughtataGermanhighschool.SheisaceramicsartistandtaughtGermanandpotteryasanadjunctfacultymemberinColoradoandVirginia.
Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athleticsin1993,andcurrentlyoverseesadepartmentwhichsponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsitysports.Shewaselectedto the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 andwaspromotedtoAssociateVice President, Director of
AthleticsandRecreationin2010.
UNHAthletics has enjoyed a high level of successacrosstheboardduringChin’s tenureasDirectorofAthletics,advancingtoNCAAtournamentover50timesin17-plus years.UNHhas recentlymadeanumberof capital improvements toathletic and recreationalfacilities,includingtheconstructionofthemulti-milliondollarDavidA.BeckermanStudentRecreationCenter,a$1.3millionsyntheticturfrenovationofKayoField(soccerandlacrosse),aswellasinstallationofstate-of-the-artblueandgoldsyntheticturfatthenewRalphF.DellaCameraStadium.In2007,Chinspearheadedefforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and findUNHanewathletics conference that bestfits the institution’s long-termacademicandathleticaspirations. Both goals were accomplishedwhenUNHannouncedonNovember13,2007 that ithadbeenacceptedasa fullmember of theprestigiousNortheast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-yearhiatus, theChargerfootballteamreturnedtothegridironin2009,andhavesincewonback-to-backconferencechampionshipsandadvancedtotheNCAAQuarterfinals.
A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975,ChinbeganherUNHcareerasCoordinatorofWomen’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coachingvolleyball,tennis,basketballandsoftballintheearlyyears.Chineventuallysurrenderedallheadcoaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she waspromotedtoAssociateDirectorofAthleticsin1979.
Amongher numeroushonors, Chinwasnamed theNACWAANCAADivisionIIAdministratoroftheYearin2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presentedChinwith theGoldKeyAward, thestate’stop sporting honor which recognizes significantcontributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99andwasawarded theNACWAA Josten’sDistrictIAdministratorof theYearAward in1997.Chinwonthe National Association for Girls andWomen inSports Presidential Award inMarch1997andwasthe Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chinhasalsoearned theU.S.VolleyballAssociationMeritoriousServiceAwardand theYMCAWomen inLeadershipAward. In2010,shewashonoredasanElmCityLegend,aneventwhichrecognizesthegreaterNewHaven region’s best in sports and communitydedication.
Asheadwomen’svolleyballcoach,ChinfashionedaHallofFameresume-literally-earninginductionintothe American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of theConnecticutVolleyballHallofFame (Inducted
October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April,1999), and theAthleticsHall ofFameatheralmamater,SUNY-Cortland.
Ina19-yearcareer(1975-93)asheadcoachfortheChargers,sheposteda578-179record(.764)andwasatthattimeonlythefifthDivisionIIcoachtowin500careermatches. TheChargersmade10 trips to theNCAAtournamentduringChin’sreign,reachingthetopfivefourtimes.HerawardsincludesixAVCANortheastRegionCoachoftheYeardistinctionsaswellaseightNewEnglandCollegiateConferenceCoachoftheYearhonors.ChincoachedtheChargerstotwelve30-winseasons,includingsixstraight.Sheisalsorecognizedinternationally as a top volleyball clinician.
Asanadministrator,Chinhasservedonover30nationalandregionalcommittees.Inadditiontohermostrecentposition as Chair of the Division II Management Council, herresumeincludestermsaschairpersonfortheNCAADivision II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), andtheNACDAJohnMcLendonMinorityScholarshipCommittee(1999-present).SheservedfouryearsontheNACWAABoardofDirectors(1993-96),andactedas the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special OlympicsWorldGamesheldinNewHaven.
A graduate of SUNY-Cortlandwith a Bachelor’s ofScience in Physical Education, Chin earned herMaster’sofSciencedegreeinPhysicalEducationfromUNC-Greensboro.

Themissionofthedepartmentofintercollegiateathleticsistosupportthemissionoftheuniversityandtointegrateintercollegiateathletics intohighereducation so that theeducational experienceof the student-athlete isparamount. Thedepartmentwillprovidegrowthopportunitiestoachieveinanationallycompetitiveintercollegiateprogramthatattracts,nurturesandgraduatesstudent-athleteswhoundertheguidanceofaqualitystaff,representtheUniversityofNewHavenwithcharacterandintegritywhileachievingacademicexcellence,servingthecommunityandpursuingexcellenceintheirrespectivesports.
DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHYHighereducationhaslastingimportanceonanindividual’sfuturesuccess.Forthisreason,theemphasisforthestudent-athleteexperienceattheUniversityofNewHavenisacomprehensiveprogramoflearninganddevelopmentinapersonalsetting.AsanNCAADivisionIIprogram,ourapproachprovidesgrowthopportunitiesthroughacademicachievement,learninginhigh-levelathleticcompetitionanddevelopmentofpositivesocietalattitudesinservicetocommunity.Thebalanceandintegrationofthesedifferentareasoflearningopportunityprovideourstudent-athletesapathtograduationwhilecultivatingavarietyofskillsandknowledgeforlifeahead.
TheUniversityofNewHavenseekstoprovidetheworldwithleaderswhocanmakeapositivedifferenceinaglobalsociety.Student-athletesareaffordeduniqueopportunitiesforleadershipbecauseofthevisibilityprovidedthroughathleticscompetition.UNH’sintercollegiateprogramprovidesopportunitiesforitsstudent-athletestodevelopmoralvirtues,suchascourage,self-confidence,andintegrityandtolearncommunicationandteamworkskillsassociatedwithoutstandingleadership.ThustheDepartmentofAthleticshelpstheUniversitysatisfyitsprimaryaspiration,whichistopreparestudentstoleadpurposefulandfulfillinglivesinaglobalsocietythroughexperiential,collaborative,anddiscovery-basedlearning.
TheDepartmentofAthleticsiscommittedtodeliveringintercollegiateathleticsprogramsthatareconsistentwiththeUniversity’smissionandgeneratesthetrustandsupportofitsvariousconstituencies.ThegoalofthedepartmentistofieldsportsteamsthatcompetesuccessfullyagainstotherNCAADivisionIIteamswhileupholdingtheacademicstandardsoftheUniversityofNewHaven.Thedepartmentisalsocommittedtoconductingitsprogramsinstrictadherencetothepolicies,rulesandregulationssetbytheUniversity’sadministration,BoardofGovernors,theNCAAandtheNortheast-10Conference.
Throughitsprograms,thedepartmentgivesitsstudent-athletesofdifferentgenders,races,religions,nationaloriginsandsexualorientationopportunitiestoparticipateinintercollegiatecompetition.TheintercollegiateprogramwillfunctionfreeofdiscriminationwithaUniversitycommitmenttotheadherencetoTitleIXandtheOfficeofCivilRightsguidelines.AmajorgoaloftheDepartmentofAthletics istohelpstudent-athletesrealizethefullpotentialoftheirathleticabilitieswhilealsoincreasingtheir intellectualcapabilitiesandprovidingthemameaningfulopportunitytoearnabaccalaureatedegree.Thedepartmentwillnotcompromiseitscommitmenttoeducateandgraduateitsstudent-athletes.
DepartmentofAthleticspersonnelareexpectedtorepresenttheUniversityinamannerconsistentwithUNH’sprinciplesandvalues.Allpersonnelareexpectedtoperformtheirresponsibilitieswiththehigheststandardsofintegrity,ethicalbehaviorandsportsmanshipatall times.Coachesandstaffareexpected to treatstudent-athletes fairlyandwith respectand to facilitateleadershipthathelpsthemmaturephysically,intellectually,emotionallyandsocially.
DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS•TheUNHwomen’svolleyballteamhasreachedtheNCAASweet16eighteentimessince1983,andadvancedtotheNCAAEliteEight11times,includinganEliteEightappearancein2008.•BaseballhasconsistentlybeenrankedasoneofthewinningestDivisionIIprogramsinNCAAhistory.BaseballCoachEmeritusFrank“Porky”Vieiraretiredafterthe2006seasonasDivisionII’sall-timewinningestcoachbypercentage,andlogged1,127careervictories.Theteamhasappearedin17CollegeWorldSeriesandmade32Regionalappearances.Baseballhasalsoproducedninemajorleagueplayers,includingformerCyYoungwinnerSteveBedrosianofthePhiladelphiaPhillies.•Women’sBasketballwontheNCAADivisionIINationalChampionshipin1987.•ThefootballprogramhasappearedinfiveNCAAplayoffs,earningrunner-upstatusin1997.Thattitle-gameappearancemadeUNHtheonlyfootballteamintheStateofConnecticuttoevercompeteforanationaltitleandthesmallestschool(intermsofenrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship.•Women’strackandfieldhasproducedarguablythemostsuccessfulindividualstudent-athleteinChargerhistory.ShannonGagnewonfivenationalchampionshipsduringthe2010-11academicyearandhelpedbringtheprogramafourthplacefinishatthe 2011 National Championship meet.•TailbackRogerGrahamwonthe1993HarlonHillTrophyasthetopDivisionIIFootballPlayerinthenation.
