Course description
This course employs a blended learning approach (uses ANVILL as the course
management system; course name: CLS_Shanghainese) that combines 11-hour face-to-face instruction with two-week online self-study. The student will be practicing basic
conversational Shanghainese on a daily basis through extensive listening and speaking
exercises. The student will also be exposed to the unique and intriguing Shanghai
culture.Course objectives
By adapting and adopting a variety of authentic materials in this course and by
interacting with the instructor, who is a native Shanghainese speaker, by the end of the
course, the student will be able to:
Understand Shanghainese within certain contexts Carry on basic daily conversations in Shanghainese Understand and discuss some aspects of Shanghai culture Utilize strategies and resources to study Shanghainese independently
Assignments and Assessment
1. Recordings (dialogue performance & self-study audio notes)
Youre required to submit recordings that document your learning progress. You can
read the transcript of the dialogues introduced in the class, write your own transcript
and then record it, and/or compose an audio note for the self-study videos
recommended by the instructor. The requirements (e.g., number of recordings, format
of audio notes) will be negotiated between the student and the instructor.
2. ShanghaiMatters Project
You can choose some Shanghai-specific topic to explore and then write an essay
and/or do an oral presentation to introduce your findings in Mandarin Chinese to
someone you think might be interested in that topic. Please bear in mind that when you
write and/or present, try to think of some real audience and make your project as

meaningful as possible. Just ask yourself: why am I doing this project? I will put in my
best effort to facilitate the completion of your project.
3. Weekly reflection and self-assessment
Youre required to finish the online weekly reflection questions by Friday noonevery
week. Please make sure that you submit your reflections on timesince your reflectionswill be very informative for me in terms of preparing for the following classes. By the
end of the course, you also need to complete a self-assessment instrument, which helps
you reflect on the learning experience and set goals for further study.
Note: At the end of the course, I will complete a narrative assessment based on your
performance in the class. I will also give you recommendations for future learning.
