As director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences from 1974 to 1993, Ruth Kirschstein MD was the first woman institute director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Throughout her career, she has worked as an administrator, fundraiser, and scientific researcher, investigating possible public health responses in the midst of crisis and conservatism.

NRSA Review Criteria•Candidate:
•previous academic and research performance•potential to become an important contributor
•Sponsor and Training Environment: •quality of the training environment •qualifications of the sponsor as a mentor
for the proposed research training experience.
•Research Proposal: •merit of the scientific proposal•relationship to the candidate's career plans.
•Training Potential: •value of the proposed fellowship experience as it relates to the candidate's needs in preparation for a career as an independent researcher.
The K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award
For clinically trained persons to pursue research careers in basic or clinical sciences.
Must apply within 3 years of clinical Training (residency +1 year of clinical fellowship)
