This palatial baroque house was built in 1767 by MichaelGerber,latertownmayorofNeckargemünd.Theimpressivebuilding,whichboastsmagnificentarchitecturalstructures,hasamainbuildingfacingthestreetandtwosymmetricallyarrangedadjoiningpartsoverlookingtheNeckarriver.

Overtheyears,the“EliseFoundation”changedhandsseveraltimes until the Walter family donated it to the town ofNeckargemünd.In1881,itbecamehometoagirls’vocationalschool.

TheElisenstraßeleadsfromNeckarstraßetothemarketplace.Housenumber8revealsanicelyhewnarchwaydisplayinganoiljugatitstop.ThiswonderfularchwayresemblestheoneoftheformerKnightHotel.

16 Marktplatz 14

This house, with its opu-lent Renaissance timberframing,datesback to theyear 1588. The trade sealand the elaborate decora-tionallow theassumptionthatacarpenterwantedtodisplayhiscraftsmanship.

17 Market Place (Marktplatz) and Catholic Church “St. Johannes Nepomuk”

Once,thetownhallwaslocatedonthelowerpartofthemarketplace.From1707totheendofthe19thcentury, thebuildingwasusedas theCatholicChurchofSt. JohannesNepomuk.Thenew,enlargedchurchwithitsnaveandtwoaisleswasbuiltin1894/96and can be seen as an example of the Romanesque Revival, abuildingstyle,whichwasverypopularinBadenatthattime.

Neckargemünd Market Place hosts the weekly market onWednesdayandSaturdaymornings.

The18thcenturybaroquebuilding’smaincharacteristicisthedistinc-tiveBaroquewindowframing,ascanbediscoveredonseveralotherhistoricalhousesinNeckargemünd’soldtown.ItwasthefirstCatho-licrectoryinNeckargemündafteralmosttwocenturiesofCalvinism.

22 Town Gate and Waltscher Platz Neckargemünd’stowngateisoftheearlyclassicalstyle;itshows

amphoraeandthetowncoatofarms.Neckargemünd’sinhabitantsbuilt it inhonourofCharlesTheodore,whowasPrince-Electoratthattime.Thetowngate’sarchitectwasF.Ch.Dyckerhoff,theCourtChambercouncillor.

TheLatinepigraphsays:“This gate was not built for the safety of the town but in honour of Prince-Elector Charles Theodore; holy to the citizens of the Palatinate as well as to foreigners, it will stand the test of time.”

Accordingtotheepigraph,thegatewascompletedin1788.

23 Reichenstein Castle

The Reichenstein Castle was built in the 12th century at the northernend of the“Hollmuth” hill. In the 14th century it was acquired by thePalatinate, only to be abandoned one century later.Today, only somewallfragmentsareleft.

Thecastlecomplexhasanalmostrectangularlayoutandisseparatedfrom the mountain ridge by a so-called “Halsgraben”, a moat. Theterracingwasconstructedatthebeginningofthe20thcentury.

18 Kleppergasse

From the market place you can walk througha small alley called Jakobsgasse to reach theKleppergasse, a name probably meaning“narrowstreet”.When,inthe18thcentury,towngates and town walls became less importantfordefence,smalltimber-framedeaveshousesbegantobebuilttightagainstthebacksideofthewall:theKleppergassewasborn.

19 Former Hospital Spitalgasse11

Thisbuildingwasonceahospitalandlaterit wasusedasthetown’srevenueoffice.Todayitisaresidentialhouse.

20 Museum in the Old Townhall / former Lutheran ChurchHauptstraße25

Datingbackto1770/71,theLutheranChurchwasbuiltintheclassicalstyle.When,in1821,theLutheranChurchandtheReformedChurchmergedtobecometheEvangelical-ProtestantChurchofBaden,theLutheran church building was sold to the town of Neckargemündandconvertedintothetownhallbuilding.Itwasusedassuchuntil1984.Today,itishometothemuseumandthepubliclibrary.

24 Menzer Villa DilsbergerStraße2

The Menzer Villa was erected in 1892, a fine example of neo-Renaissance architecture in the style of the“German Gründerzeit“.Its architect was Leonhard Schäfer. Julius Menzer (1845-1917), thewell-knownwinewholesaler,GreekConsuland“Reichstag”delegate,livedhere.

25 High-Water Path, information board 1 InOctober2014thetownofNeckargemündinitiateda“High-Water

Path” running 2.5 kilometres along the rivers Neckar and Elsenz.Ten information boards explain the development of this naturalphenomenonofhighwaterandfloodingaswellastheimpactonthetownofNeckargemünd,situatedasitisrightontheestuaryoftheElsenzleadingintotheNeckar.

Citadel of DilsbergFromthe16metrehighcurtainwalloftheCitadelofDilsberg–fourkilometresfromNeckargemünd–youhaveasplendidpanoramicviewovertheNeckarvalleyandtheregionofKraichgau.Visitingthesubterraneanwell,whosepassagewayleadsyouabout80metresintothemountain–accessibleinthesummermonths–isastunningexperience.

Path of Senses (Sinnenpfad)The2.7-kilometre“Sinnenpfad”offersthevisitorrestingpointstolearn,relaxandreflectonnature,whileenjoyingaforestwalkfromNeckargemündtothehilltopvillageofWaldhilsbach.

1 Hemp Market (Hanfmarkt)

Thefirsthouseswerebuilthere,outsidethetownwall,inthe16thcentury.The“Hanfmarkt” was a part of the“Katharinenmarkt”(foundedin1554)wheretheflaxandhempweresold.

2 Schilder Cottage AmHanfmarkt4

This two-storeyresidentialhousewasbuilt in 1569. It isahalf-timbered Franconian style building, which is named after MrsSchilder,aformerowner.

Other, albeit undated, houses boasting 16th century Franconiantimberframingcanbefoundat:

5 Mariners’ Mast

Themariners’mastwaserectedonthetannerysquarebythetown’smariners club with the cooperation of the Pioneer Brotherhood ofMariners to commemorate Neckargemünd’s traditional marineprofessions,theshipbuilders,raftsmenandfishermen.

6 Neckar High-Water Marks

AtSchiffgasse17,thereisahigh-watermarkonthewallofthehouse,commemorating the exceptional floods of 24 February 1784. At thetime, the Neckar river was also covered with sheets of ice when itoverflowed its banks. Nearby, you will find other houses with high-water marks, for example house number 11. Like several others, itcountsamongthemariners’andfishermen’shousesthatwerebuiltherebetween1767and1770.Furtherhigh-watermarkscanbefoundonhousenumber21inElsenzweg.

7 Neckar Wharf (Neckarlauer)

This is where the wharf and pier for all shipping traffic used to be:ferries,raftsandtransportshipscameandwent.Moreover,thiswasagoodplaceforbuildingships.Today,theshipsofthe’WeißeFlotte‘(Whitefleet)are landinghereontheirdaily trips toNeckarsteinach(upriver)orHeidelberg(downriver)duringthesummerseason.

8 Protestant Parish Church St. Ulrich Hauptstraße

The St. Ulrich’s Church, the protestant parish church of the’Markusgemeinde’ was dedicated to the patron saint of fishermenandmariners.From1720to1728, thesingle-nave, lateGothicedificewasrestoredandextended.Whatisveryremarkableisthatthereisstillawell-preservedburialmemorialon theouterwallnext to theentrance. It dates back to 1640 and commemorates Anna EleonoreGluck,wifeofmayorGluck. TheoldestbellofSt.Ulrich is from theyear1477.

9 Oil-Jug Fountain Hauptstraße

Thisfountainwasbuiltin1932andcommemoratestheoilproductioninanoilmillthatusedtostandbytheElsenzcreek.

10 “Prince Carl“, music school and adult education centre Hauptstraße56

Neckargemündhasbeenhometoagreatnumberofrestaurantswiththeirownbreweriesandthe“PrinceCarl”wasoneofthem.Itsoriginalnamewas“ZumDolken”(TheDagger)andthetradesealabovethesideentranceindicatesthatitwasusedasatanneryinlatertimes.

11 Vaulted cellars of the former Knight Hotel (Knappenkeller) Neckarstraße40

The vaulted cellars were part of one of the oldest hotels inNeckargemünd:theformerhotel“ZumRitter”(KnightHotel).In2003,this magnificent timber-framed Renaissance edifice, was destroyedbyafire.Allthathasremainedaretherichlydecoratedarchway,dated1579,andthevaultedcellarswhichdatebackevenfurther.

12 Former Greek Tavern “City of Athens“ Neckarstraße38

Thisancientbuilding,atypicaleaveshouse,datesbacktothe17thor18thcentury.Itwasoriginallyconstructedasatwo-storeyhousebutin1905itwasenlargedbyathirdstorey.Here,JuliusMenzer,aGreekConsulandwinewholesaler,setupthefirstGreektaverninGermany.The“GriechischeWeinstube”wasalsooneoftheoldeststudentbarsintheHeidelbergarea.

13 Former Guest House “Lamb” Neckarstraße36

Built in 1507, this ancient guest house represents another fineexample of richly decorated timber framing, featuring delicatelycarvedchimaeras.The’Schreckkopf‘(masquewithagrotesqueface),whichcanbeseeninthecentre,wasmadeinthemid-19thcentury.

Haus Kessler, built in 1605, is another fine example of timberframing craftsmanship and also illustrating the style of livingbeforetheThirtyYears’War.

4 Tannery Square (Lohplatz)

This iswhere the tanningpitswere located.Thetanneries’ products were well-known, even farbeyond Neckargemünd’s town limits.This place,where the small river Elsenz enters (mündet in)theNeckar,hasgivenNeckargemünditsname.
