This year’s Rice Design Alliance Architecture Tour commemorates the 40th anniversary of RDA and the
Centennial celebrations of Rice University and the Rice School of Architecture. Dubbed the Centennial Tour,
the ten significant Houston residences featured were designed by Rice School of Architecture faculty
throughout the school’s 100 year history. These captivating homes were designed by educator-practitioner
architects, including William Ward Watkins, Anderson Todd, and Nonya Grenader. According to Rice Design
Alliance, the homes on the tour are a testament to the enduring impact that the school has made on the
residential community in Houston. Spanning 10 decades, tour attendees are given a unique opportunity to
reflect on the changes and evolutions—from the traditional to the avant garde—that architecture has under-
gone over the past century, as interpreted by local talent. The tour is open to RDA members and their
guests. Information: (713) 348-4876 or ricedesignalliance.org.

that would not matter to buyers. Since the previous house sold quickly andI had worked with you before, I really trusted your recommendations andknew what to expect.”

Hilton Head, SC. Happily, they found one on a tree-lined street. “Afterquickly selling our house we again called you to get objective feedbackon our ideas and to decide what furniture to keep and what to let go.You came out the day our slab was being jack hammered and didn’t missa beat!” Sheryl recalled.
Her husband Charlie had already begun the process by tearing outsheetrock, widening the living room entrance, framing out the mediacabinet and was about to level the toe stubbing entry floor (“an accidentwaiting to happen”) when Sheryl’s ideas reached an impass. “The prob-lems started with walking into a closet door and directing guests into thekitchen rather than the living room,” Sheryl explained, “and went onfrom there.” By relocating the entry closet they created space for a table, lamp, Century Furniture mirror, accessories, not to mention a newmahogany front door from BMC.
The awkward, L-shaped liv-ing room definitely needed afacelift and floorplan. After lis-tening carefully to their needs,I suggested that they add swiv-el mechanisms under twoexisting club chairs near the TV to create a comfy but practical grown upsitting area near the kitchen. The floorplan allowed the couple to create aseating arrangement where guests could swivel to see the TV or talk toguests in the living room without adding another eating area, which theydid not want, or another typical sofa seating area. “I have followed yourHouston House & Home Before/After column for years and called youseveral years ago to help us sell our other house and was pleased withyour suggestions,” Sheryl said. “I liked your philosophy of using things

we already own to create the rooms we want,” shesaid.
TIP: This living room needed an update. When indoubt, be consistent with hardware, flooring, walland trim paint colors (Benjamin Moore “SandyWhite” matte walls and Satin Impervo Acrylic LatexEnamel in #314-01 “White”) and you will be correct.
“When we met, you were very helpful in suggest-ing that the hearth jutted into the room and limitedfurniture placement. Sheryl felt comfortable enoughwith my recommendations to hire a brick mason tofinish the brick fireplace and Charlie built a whitemillwork fireplace surround, added recessed can light-ing from Carol’s Lighting and removed the popcorntexture off the ceiling to pull the room together.“Thanks to you, the living room has the comfortablefeeling that is consistent with entertaining large andsmall groups and yet still has the casual, light andopen look that I wanted,” she said.
TIP: Don’t be afraid to recycle existing furniture tosuit your needs. Just because a piece of furniture hasalways been in one room does not mean it cannot berelocated.
Sheryl’s favorite part of the living room is the light, bright, consistent feeling the room has. The couple(as well as their friends and family) loves the finalresult and recommends people get professional helpto transform an ‘ugly ducking house’.

Dear Plantophiles, A star performer in our gardens at thistime of year is the camellia. This group of shade-loving woody plantsgraces us with spectacular floral display for a nine-month period fromSeptember into May.
There are over 119 different species of camellia, all evergreen shrubsor trees hailing from Asia. They prefer acid soil, but the good news isthat most of them can be easily grown in our heavy, neutral to slightlyalkaline, soils—just ensure that they stay moist, but not soaking wet.
Nearly every camellia seen in our gardens primarily derives fromtwo species: Camellia sasanqua, which blooms from autumn throughmid-winter, and Camellia japonica, with blooms from winter throughspring. Their floral diversity is dazzling: shapes resembling anemones, carnations, peonies and lilies range in size from small, one-inch, but-tons to eye-poppers over seven inches across. Colors in solid, streaked, spotted and splashed patterns occur in white and countless shades ofpink and red. A rarely-seen group of tropical yellow-flowered speciesmay one day be the parents of a hardy yellow-flowered hybrid.Fragrant varieties that exude delicate notes of candy, spice, roses, mintand tea also exist.
Those gardeners who always seem to find reasons to complain(I collectively refer to them as “misery-guts” and suspect theywere never taken to the circus as children) say that, architectural-ly, the camellia is a boring green blob of a plant when not inflower. The solution to their gripe: look for new introductions ofspecies and specialty-hybrid camellias, whose habits includecolumnar, weeping, spreading, and even contorted, with leavesfrom one-half inch to over seven inches long. They can resembleprivet, leucothoe, laurel, gardenia and magnolia, in sizes fromtwo-foot high dwarfs up to 40-foot trees with striking, smooth, orange, brown or silvery bark.
Camellias have been grown in this country for over 270 years, but we are mere novices, as they have been cultivated in Chinafor nearly 5,000 years beginning with the tea plant, Camelliasinensis. The next time you tip back that glass of sweet tea, knowthat you are drinking the essence of camellia!
Keep on Growing!

Wear, weather extremes, poor upkeep and just plain age can takethe sparkle out of a backyard pool. How has your pool enduredover the years? From a minor touch up to an extreme makeover, the possibilities for fixing up and existing pool are almost endless, but seeing those dreams realized requires a plan that fits yourbudget and skilled professionals who will get it done right.
We asked pool construction and renovation experts for theiradvice on making over a weary pool. Here’s what they had to say.
OPTIONS FOR UPGRADES An existing pool can benefit from sprucing up the surfaces, as wellas many functional and visual upgrades.
“Options for a pool remodel depend on many variables, such asthe age of your pool,” says Berry Pools owner John Berry, who hasbeen in the pool construction business since 1978. “Some poolowners choose to simply refresh the interior surfaces, while manywant to add a spa or second skimmer to their pool. Another areaof consideration is energy efficiency. Many pool owners are look-ing to reduce utility bills by changing out their pump equipment.” Berry points out that pools not remodeled since in the past severalyears will need to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pooland Spa Safety Act of 2007, which applies to pool drains. (Seeinfo on p. 30.)
Return to ParadiseYour pool makeover can go swimmingly with smart planning and the right contractor
Today, homeowners can consider converting an existing pool to a natural swimming pool. This type of pool employs nature’s methods of water filtration to provide clean, chemical-free water. Photo courtesy of BioNova Natural Pools.

ON THE SURFACEFor decades, white plaster was the industry standard for pool interi-ors. This material, consisting of cement, marble dust and aggregates, provides the smoothest possible finish, but holds up for an average ofonly 8-10 years. Longer lasting materials, such as plaster blendedwith quartz pieces, tiny pebbles or glass beads, are not quite assmooth, but can last for 15 to 25 years.
CHEMICAL-FREE POOLSNatural swimming pools are an alternative to traditional chlorinepools. Alan Weene, head of marketing and technical support forBioNova Natural Pools explains that any traditional pool can be con-verted into a natural swimming pool in a few different ways.
“The formal aesthetics of a traditional pool can be preserved, or itcan be made to look more like a pond,” says Weene. To do so, hesays, new plumbing, mechanical, and filtration equipment will berequired. Also, an additional area (approximately equal in size to theswimming area) must be dug out for the new regeneration zone.
Rock walls and stone accents remain popular for decking and water features. Photo courtesy of Adams Tile & Plaster.

“This area can be excavated around the perimeter of the existingpool or completely separate in its own contained vessel,” saysWeene. “The easiest way to perform a conversion (and most eco-nomical) is to build within the walls of the existing swimmingpool by installing a retaining wall to separate the swimming areafrom the regeneration zone.” For this, he explains that the poolowner must be willing to sacrifice 50 percent of their existingswimming area for the latter option.
When asked about mosquito issues, Weene cites that BioNovahas built natural swimming pools in more than 30 countries, in allclimates from hot/dry to cold/wet and everything in between.
“The aquatic plants will be carefully selected based on the client'sclimate zone,” says Weene. “Mosquitoes are not an issue becausethe water is always circulating, and mosquitoes prefer to lay theireggs in stagnant water.”
Weene suggests that if your pool is in poor condition, it is bestto approach the project as a new construction rather than a con-version. Also, the size of the property will dictate what type of nat-ural swimming pool conversion will be most appropriate.
CAREFUL PLANNING“Finish other major projects around your house first,” says JohnBerry of Berry Pools. “You don’t want a roofing job or house addi-tion going on after your pool project is complete.
It’s very important to truly know your budget before you start aproject, Berry insists. “It’s also best to interview at least three poolcontractors before deciding on one. Ask to see a Release of Lienand Affadavit of All Bills Paid. If the contractor doesn’t have these, then the homeowner may be held responsible for paying subcon-tractors.”
Adding a spa to an existing pool is a significant splurge, but adds year-roundenjoyment to your pool. Photo courtesy of Reflection Pools & Spas.

Recent Pool Safety RegulationThe Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act is a federal law (putinto effect in Dec. 2008) that requires anti-entrapment drain coversand other devices be placed over pool drains to prevent seriousinjuries and accidental deaths. To learn more, search for “pool safetyact” at www.houstontx.gov.
Choosing A Contractor• Take your time interviewing possible contractors. Ask keyquestions to make sure you hire a contractor who candeliver the pool of your dreams, not leave you with a night-mare.
• Make sure the company is experienced and qualified todo the work and obtains the proper permits. Each city inour area has its own codes—ask your local authority fordetails.
• Ask for work references, check with the Better BusinessBureau, and look for contractors who are members of theAssociation of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP).
• Ask if the company offers free estimates. Do theyrequire payment upfront? Or can you withhold paymentuntil the project is fully completed.
• Check their papers. Ask to see a proof of insurance cer-tificate. If they don’t actually have insurance, the home-owner can be held responsible for an accident on the jobsite. Ask to see a Release of Lien and Affidavit of All BillsPaid, these documents assure the homeowner is notresponsible for paying any subcontractors.
• Ask if the company requires a lump-sum payment or ifthere is a financing option.
Think carefully about how you and your family will use your pool before selecting your options. Photo courtesy of Reflection Pools & Spas.
It’s wise to develop a full landscape and lighting plan with your pool design, even if you have to complete the entire plan in stages.

Nonya and Jonathan Grenader have lived onthe same street in Southampton Place foralmost 30 years. The Grenaders treasure therelatively quiet streets and soothing treecanopy of the neighborhood, which bordersRice University.
Since 1994, Nonya Grenader, FAIA, has taught seminars and stu-dios for Rice School of Architecture, where she is a Professor inPractice and is Associate Director of Rice Building Workshop, whichchallenges architecture students to apply their creativity to real-lifeprojects. Her work has garnered numerous awards from AIAHouston and Preservation Houston, so it’s quite fitting that thehome she designed for she and husband Jonathan in 2007 is includ-ed in this year’s Rice Design Alliance Architecture Tour. “It’s anhonor to be included in the tour with other Rice faculty,” saysNonya Grenader.
The tour marks the 40th anniversary of RDA and the Centennialcelebrations of Rice University and the Rice School of Architecture. To celebrate these occasions, the 2013 RDA tour features homesdesigned by Rice Architecture faculty from the past century. (Seepage 14 for tour info.)
The Grenaders’ home consists of a two-story main house and atwo-story studio structure linked by a dogtrot-style porch and an
Architect Nonya Grenader designed the home to be in harmony with the ele-ments and to maximize the views of the trees on the lot. The Grenaders’ homeincludes a serene mix of antique pieces, distinctly modern furnishings, blackand white photography and whimsical works of art. The dining room featuresan old farm table paired with more modern Prague chairs.

upper-level bridge. From the beginning, Nonya and Jonathansought to have a garden with a house, rather than a house with agarden as afterthought.
“We established the footprint of the house with the purpose ofsaving the trees, which include two large magnolias, a camphor tree,an oak and a pecan tree,” says Nonya Grenader.
Like many couples whose children have gone on to careers andcollege, Nonya and Jonathan were seeking to simplify when theydecided to build their new home. Fortunately, the lot they werebuilding on was located next door to the home the Grenader familyhad spent the past 23 years in.
“We were ready to have fewer rooms and to edit our things ingeneral,” says Nonya.
Nonya’s architectural work and teachings are often focused onsmall to mid-size spaces that are efficient and flexible. “A small spacecan yield quite a bit of function,” she says. “Rooms that are designedto be flexible can serve many purposes.”
Nonya primarily designs residential projects and says she feels fortu-nate to have worked with great clients. “I think of clients as a narra-
The living room, situated at the front of the home, takes in the two grandmagnolias that grace the sidewalk. The furniture is arranged for conversa-tion, with a variety of seating choices that instantly communicates the roomis a place where individuals and their ideas come together. Early modernpieces, such as an Eames Compact Sofa, tubular Brno chairs and a Nelsonbench are grouped with older pairs of chairs, which were flea market finds.Jonathan and Nonya designed the iron and glass coffee table.

tive—it’s how someone’s story influences a house. A house is verypersonal and the client adds as much as the architect.”
Nonya maximized the space in her own home under the centrallylocated stairs by carving out a nice-sized pantry and computer nook.A shelf within the pantry serves as a cantilever for a bench in theentryway next to the stairs.
THE ELEMENTS & ARCHITECTURE
“Architects have always been mindful of sustainability—that’s alot of what we do,” says Nonya. “For example, consideringsun/shade exposures, taking advantage of breezes for ventilationand allowing for drainage are things that architects thinkabout.”
For their living space Nonya focused on maximizing theviews of their trees, as well as cross-ventilation. All of therooms feature wide views of the wooded lot and in considera-tion for keeping those trees nourished, the house sits on a pier-and-beam foundation, so rainwater drenches the land, anddoesn’t just run off to the street.
The house is laid out with a linear concept to take advantage of the existingmagnolia, camphor, oak and pecan trees. The entry and the kitchen featureRam windows that stretch all the way to the 10-foot ceiling.
59
house&home | March 2013 | house and home on l ine . com60
The house employs various methods of passive sustainability. These include keeping the original mature trees, building roofoverhangs to maximize shade, being conservative about expo-sure to afternoon sun, selecting windows with high R-valuesand aligning those windows for optimum cross ventilation.
Utilizing a raised pier-and-beam foundation allows breezes toblow and rainfall to be absorbed by the earth below. The homeis highly insulated and clad with durable materials, such as claytile and Hardie siding. All of these measures result in lowerenergy bills, less maintenance and greater durability than aver-age.
Additionally, the garden area has no grass to mow, only jas-mine and lots of permeable surface, so the ground can makeuse of water, especially during heavy rains.
GOOD TO BE FLEXIBLE
“Our first step was to determine the amount of square footage wereally needed,” says Nonya. “Architecture is often about editing andknowing what’s essential.”
Ease of entertaining was a priority in the kitchen. No-fuss Silestone counter-tops provide durable workspace, and a floor-to-ceiling hospital-style curtaincan quickly hide the sink and cook top while guests linger after dinner. The plan of the 1800-square-foot main house is essentially justfour rooms: two over two with stairs in middle. Nonya designedevery room, every inch, to be useful and multipurpose. On the firstfloor, the street-side magnolias embrace the living room, while thekitchen and dining room connect to the deck and dogtrot area viadoorways and floor-to-ceiling windows.
The second floor of the main house includes the master bed-room and bath, as well as a library that doubles as a guest room.
A 700-square-foot, separate structure houses studio spaces forNonya and Jonathan, who is a structural engineer. Nonya’s first-floor studio lies just across the porch from the dining room, whileJonathan’s second-floor studio is set off from the master bedroomby a metal bridge. His studio also converts into a guest room.Nonya’s studio serves as an overflow dining room when the couplehosts large groups.
STRENGTH OF THE TEAM
Jonathan often collaborates with Nonya on design projects. “Afavorite thing of mine is seeing the exposed rafters of the roof,” saysJonathan. “I like seeing the structure at work.”
Jonathan also praises Nonya’s talent for controlling the footprint, yet working in adequate space and function into a home.
“I think other architects primarily think of the design and the

Flow from inside to outside was a central design goal for Nonya andJonathan. The home embraces the natural beauty of the lot and the surrounding neighborhood. The raised pier-and-beam foundation and win-dow placement take advantage of the prevailing breeze. The Grenaders

look of a house, but Nonya’sfirst priority is the pragmatics:how it will hold up in the rain, overhangs at windows anddoors, those physical qualitiesthat help a house hold up to theelements,” says Jonathan.

Beauty Underfoot Beauty Underfoot Rugs have been turning houses into homes for thousandsof years. Today, they are a classic element of homedesign with broad spectrum of colors, textures, materialsand patterns to choose from.
“Rugs bring a warm and inviting look to a room—also elegance. They can open up a small room by using a light color rug with lessornate patterns,” says Valerie Roberts, owner and rug buyer for bothRoberts Carpet & Fine Floors and Dazzling Décor. “For oversizedrooms, they help define the space—maybe use a rug at a conversationarea on one side and, across the room, beneath a game table. Besides, there’s nothing like the softness of a rug under bare feet.”

WEAR & CARERoberts advises homeowners to routinely rotate their rugs 180degrees to even out traffic patterns. She also encourages using a rugpad—“Rugs tend to wear out first underneath. A rug pad willextend the life of your rug,” says Roberts.
FORM & FUNCTIONPleasing aesthetics isn’t the only benefit of rugs. There’s a practicali-ty, too. “They absorb sound which is important with the trendtoward hard surface flooring. They are versatile—you can take themwith you when you move. In fact, you might have a rug that looksperfect in the den of your first home and works wonderfully in abedroom in your second home,” Roberts points out.
TODAY’S TRENDS Because rugs are one of the few functional fixtures that can easily bechanged out, rugs are a great way to express your personal style.Current trends offer an ever-broadening variety of rugs styles.Graphic patterns, such as geometric shapes in bold colors offerinstant vibrancy. Think of overlapping circles or simple zigzags. Arelated and popular look includes patterns and textures from classicclothing styles, such as herringbone and stripes in crisp navy andwhite. Global looks and rugs that mimic animal hides are perennialfavorites that can be found in trendy colors as well.

projectAsk Before You BuyHow does the rug feel to the touch?Run you hand on the surfaces and think about how the rug
will feel to bare feet.
How durable is the finish? Are the edges neatly bound, stitched or left raw?
Are the materials natural or manmade?
What kind of wear will the rug endure – high traffic
from kids and pets or just occasional foot traffic? Will the rug
be well-suited for those conditions?
What is your budget? What qualities of a rug are priorities? Which rug will fit those
criteria and your price range?

pet of the month
HI, I’M PRIETA! I am sweet, cuddly,
shy at first, but I warm up quickly. I
love small kids and spending time out-
side, running, rolling in the grass or
lounging. I’m told I do well on a leash,
too. After a bit of exercise, I like to set-
tle down nicely in the house or my
crate. Come on over to the Houston
SPCA to see what I am really like (and
to get a closer look at my beautiful
brown eyes). Just ask to have a "meet
and greet" with me. I will be the per-
fect companion for you and can’t wait
to see my new Forever Home.
