FROM THE PASTORS DESK
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! And Happy Lent! Say what? Thatsright! Happy Lent! As the opening words of the Preface tothe Eucharistic prayer state, Father each year You give usthisjoyfulseason of Lent. Yes, we need to pass through thePassion and Death of Jesus, but the conclusion of our Lenten
journey is the Resurrection of the Lord. Lent takes us to and
through Good Friday, but it culminates in Easterand in au-thentic Easter joy!
Actually, the word lent itself in English comes from theroot meaning spring. Lent calls us to celebrate the springtime of our faiththe budding and blossoming of a renewedexperience of and commitment to the Lord in our hearts andin our lives. These 40 days thenwhich echo the 40 days thatJesus spent in the desertare a time of spiritual springcleaning as well. This weeks Gospel from Mark (1:12-15)sets both the goal and the itinerary: Repent, and believe inthe Gospel. Or, as we heard on Ash Wednesday: Turn awayfrom sin and believe in the Good News. All too often, wefocus on the sin but not on the incredible Good News ofGods redeeming love for us in and through Jesus Christ.
We have a long tradition of considering Lent as a time ofpersonal sacrifice. What are you giving up for Lent thisyear? we ask each other. Candy? TV? Facebook? Star-bucks? Maybe even (heaven forbid) my I-Pod ? Thats great ,but sometimes we lose the real meaning behind Lenten sacri-fice in our gestures of spiritual self-improvement.
So why not turn the question around for once? Instead ofasking ourselves What should I give up for Lent? How aboutasking: What do I really want for Easter? Well, what do Ireally want for Easter? More peace in my heart? More bal-ance and harmony in my life? How about a deeper relation-ship with God and a more satisfying connection with mybrothers and sisters?
So what are we willing to do to have these good things inour lives? How do we get there spiritually? This weekendsGospel message (Mark 1: 12-15), gives us both the destinationand the route. We get there spiritually by embarking on thepath of repentanceby making a course correction (or evena U-turn, if necessary)-- in the way that we presently live ourlives. And we truly begin to believe in the Good Newsaswe let go of worry, doubt, fear, and even disillusionmentalong the way and listen more carefully, as if for the firsttime, to the voice of Gods love in our hearts.
Both Scripture and our tradition show us the way to pro-gress in our Lenten journey-- our spiritual spring cleaningthrough the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
They are not ends in themselves, but help us prepare a spaceto receive God more deeply in our lives. They remind us ofour complete and total dependence upon God for every goodthing we are and possess. And even as we accept the de-mands of the journey, we never lose sight of our destinationin the fullness of Easter joy. Lets support each other alongthe way. And soa very happy, joyfulLent to us all!
God bless,
Fr. Chuck

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2012Next weekend we will be given the chance to demon-
strate our solidarity with our fellow Catholics in the Dio-
cese of San Diego. You will be given a brochure explaining
this years Annual Catholic Appeal program and a pledge
card to indicate your support. The bishop this year has
chosen Teaching, Sanctifying, Serving, and Shepherding as
our theme.
Again a portion of your contribution will go to the devel-
opment of parishes in the Imperial Valley portion of our
diocese. Did you know that this area has one of the high-
est unemployment rates in the US? At approximately 30%
unemployment this area will be slow to recover. It also
has one of the fastest growing catholic populations and
they need our help. This is your chance.
Some of you have received packets in the mail and
have already responded. To date 66 of you have pledged
$13,224.00 out of our target of $64,000. You will hear
more at Mass next weekend. Please come with an open
mind and a generous spirit. Support this years ACA. If we
raise funds in excess of our target it will be rebated to us.
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Lent is here again and the statues are covered in peniten-tial purple. This reminds us that the Church is doing penance
and getting spiritually fit, ready to celebrate the Resurrection
of Our Lord at Easter. There are three tried and true ways of
getting fit during Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We
are encouraged to pray more spend a little time with the
scriptures by ourselves or in a small group take time to be
quiet during the day come to daily Mass perhaps. Fastingheightens our spiritual awareness and makes us appreciative
of what we often take for granted. Imagine giving up coffee
for Lent and then imagine the taste of that first cup on Easter
Sunday morning! How we would delight the gift of coffee
again having fasted from it during Lent. Fasting cleanses the
body and the soul and when we pray and fast at the same
time we open ourselves to grace; the Divine energy, which is
a gift from God. Almsgiving reminds us that its not all about
me its all about us! The fruit of our relationship with God
is measured by our love and concern for others, especially
the most vulnerable. We are invited to pay more attention
to others, to our neighbor, in practical ways. We are takenout of ourselves and our own selfish concerns into the heart
of another. These three disciplines or spiritual practices will
refresh our faith and open us to the action of God in our
lives. Then we can rise with Christ at Easter transformed
and made new by our Lenten observance.

THE CATECHETICAL MINUTEROMAN MISSALThe Nicene Creed Part 1
The creed is a Profession of Faith. The earliest forms of theCreed we find in the Rites of Baptism, and Christian Initiation.Later the Creed was expanded by the Church to include morespecific truths that made clear what the Church believed attimes when there were heresies or confusion.
The Nicene Creed dates to year 325, at the Council of Ni-caea where it proclaimed a clear declaration of the teachings
of the Church against a heresy that denied Jesus being trulyGod and truly man.
In the current changes to the translation of the Creed mostwere brought about because the previous translation usedparaphrases rather than more literal wording. Following thestandards set for the new translation we are provided with amore precise rendering of the Latin, seen as critically im-portant in the Creed, which is a liturgical statement of thebeliefs held by the Church.
In place ofWe believe in one Godthe translation now readsI believe in one God. The Latin word Credo with which theCreed begins is literally translated I believe. The new transla-tion emphasizes that there can be no we believe unless onecan first say I believe.. The translation also emphasizes that
the proclamation of the Creed at Mass comes from the oneBody of Christ, an understanding reflected in the words of St.Thomas Acquinas who wrote that the Church proclaims theCreed as a single person, made one by faith.
We now say invisible not just unseen. The use of theword invisible helps clarify what we are referring to, theentire spiritual order of angels and the human soul. Thesethings are not only unseenbut not capable of being seen.Roman Missal FormationMaterial USCCB

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 26 de febrero del 2012
Querida Familia Parroquial,
Paz y todo bien! Y Feliz Cuaresma! Qu? Eso es
correcto, Feliz Cuaresma!
Cmo hacemos nosotros para llegar all espiri-
tualmente?
Nosotros llegamos all espiritualmente al em-
No

rante Cuaresma: Oracin, Ayuno y Limosna.
Estamos invitados a poner ms aten-
So-
mal. Padre Adrian Peelo, ofm
