From Fr. Adrian
Shirley, our Parish Secretary, has warned me not totake up too much room in the Parish Bulletin this week aswe are filled with news and information not a bad com-plaint!
Thanks to all who contributed towards the new icons inthe Parish Chapel. We just have six and they weresnapped up quickly. To those of you who wanted to have
an icon and couldnt we are putting icons of St. Francis,St. Clare and St. Anthony in the Serra Center also, so ifyoud like to buy one of these you are most welcome.Good religious art is important and necessary both fordevotion and to remind us that the saints, our sisters andbrothers, pray for us in Heaven and point the way to Godfor us on earth.
The new shrines in the Parish Chapel will have on theleft side, a shrine to the Family showing an icon of Jesus,Mary and Joseph; an icon of Jesus with Children and anicon of the Guardian Angel with a boy and girl. On theright side there will be a Franciscan Shrine with icons of
St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare of Assisi and St. Anthony ofPadua. The wall hanging at the back shows an image ofOur Lady of the Angels, the title of the very first Francis-can church in Assisi called the Portiuncula (Little Por-tion) the little chapel St. Francis loved so much andwhich is the mother church of all Franciscan Churches inthe world.
It was a sad day for us all on Tuesday when JorgePonce, Rebecca and their family said goodbye to theirdaughter Gina who died at the young age of 24. Jorgehas been a leader in the Hispanic Community and a dedi-cated member of our parish. We extend to him and his
family our sympathy on their loss. May Gina rest inpeace!

July 6 8, 2012With Brother Mark Schroder, OFM
The relevance of St. Francis and the actions of Franciscanwomen and men for over 800 years can help us address thechallenges that modern society brings to us.

WWWEEE AAARERERE CCCATHOLICSATHOLICSATHOLICSANDANDAND AAAMERICANMERICANMERICANFollowing one of the priorities of the US. Bishops, the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty has published adeclaration encouraging Catholics to speak up and denounce when they consider their freedom is threatened. The declaration begins by stating that, We are Catholics. We are American. We are proud to be both, gratefulfor the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty To be Catholic andAmerican should mean not having to choose one over the other.
The Bishops raise the question, Is our most cherished freedom truly under threat? They responded alluding
to several areas where religious freedom is threatened: The mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services. The immigration laws of several states. Altering Church structure and governance. The organization of Catholic students in university campuses Catholic foster care and adoption services. Discrimination against small church congregations Discrimination against Catholic Humanitarian services
The document ends by urging Catholics toward an intensification of prayer and fasting for religious liberty.
