CALLED TO TRUST

St. Francis of Assisi is o en quoted as saying, “Start by do-ing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” In my life, I’ve o en reflected on this quote, marveling at Francis’ certainty that by having faith and taking that leap to ac on, God would bless and grow the work he was doing. As your pastor, I find myself stepping out as Francis did, invi ng the people of San Luis Rey to walk with myself and Fr. Arturo during this Steward-ship month as we pray, reflect and trust in God’s indwelling presence. How did St. Francis build that trust and faith in God? He remembered the scriptures that tell us that if God cares for the birds and the flowers, surely, God will care for him and the people he served. He reflected on his model, Jesus, who taught through both his words and ac ons, not to be afraid or worry. Fear wears away trust quickly and deeply. At key moments in his life and ministry, both Jesus and St. Francis spent significant me in prayer, discerning and commi ng to the Father’s loving will. As disciples and good Stewards of the Gospel, we are invited to do the same. Trus ng in God sounds easy, but we all know that it’s not. It’s a challenge not to worry, be fearful or concerned about the future. The news is filled with heartbreak and war, murder and falling stock markets. We are surrounded by our human brokenness, confronted at every turn. How does it make sense for Jesus to say, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.” (John 14:1) All I can say is, if we follow Jesus’ and St. Francis’ lead: rely on prayer; place our cares before God; act in faith and trust, the result is truly a more peaceful heart. Some prac cal ways to grow in trust this September: trust that God’s ways are the best for us. When you feel that tug to forgive, to serve and to give as God calls us to, don’t hold back. Trust in God’s love even when things are bleak. Remember Jesus’ complete trust in the Father’s plan even as he walked the road to the cross. Trust in God’s ways with the prac cal, daily aspects of your life. Let your faith be your priority. Place yourself in God’s caring embrace each day; begin and end the day with prayers of gra tude, pe -

on, requests for forgiveness and mercy. This will help you build a founda on of trust. And finally, Trust in the Holy Spirit’s gentle and persistent promp ngs: How can we know what or how much we need to serve, give, share, or care? When we feel something touch our heart that calls us beyond ourselves for the sake of an-other, we can be sure the Holy Spirit is calling. Trust in that gentle yet persistent call, and respond as generously as you are able. “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and the one who sows boun fully will also reap boun fully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Cor 9: 6-7) May God bless you and give you peace, this week and al-ways.

Fr. David

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

St. James teaches that those who are poor in the eyes of society are the ones who have been chosen to inherit the Kingdom of God. Indeed, we are saved because of our poverty; we are redeemed out of our need; not be-cause of our material wealth or achievements that the world finds praiseworthy. St. James also suggests that we are stewards of others, especially the poor; and it is how we respond to the poor and needy that will define our rela onship with the Lord. How do we respond to the less fortunate right within our own parish?

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT JUNIPERO SERRA Move forward and never turn back - Junipero Serra

Did you know that Spanish Military Governor Fernando Rivera insisted that the Na ve Americans who killed Fray Luis Jayme and two other Spaniards at Mission San Diego in 1775 be severely punished before rebuilding the mis-sion? Serra consistently begged for lenient treatment of the Indians who led the rebellion and killed Fray Jayme. And he wrote directly to the Viceroy with the personal request, “if the Indians were to kill me, whether they be gen les or Chris ans, they should be forgiven.” “Great was our joy when we obtained a general amnesty…. be-cause of our love of God, we set them free, so that they might [having repented] lead be er lives,” said Serra.

LLAMADOS A CONFIAR

Padre David Gaa, OFM
