LENT @ MSLRP

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fas ng (the ea ng of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fas ng. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abs nence (the exclusion of meat for the en re day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abs nence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mor fica on as an expression of gra tude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an a empt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Centuries ago, these Lenten days were a me of in-tense final prepara on for the candidates for bap sm. By now, they had already been numbered among the “elect” for Easter bap sm, and were daily challenged to excel in prayer, in fas ng, and in works of charity. As is true today, at a certain point in the weekly assembly for Eucharist, the nonbap zed were dismissed from the as-sembly for their own learning and prayer. While they might have had impressions about the Eucharist, they had no direct experience. The rites of the church were secret and its worship places off-limits. For the Easter Vigil, those to be bap zed arrived very hungry from long fas ng, and perhaps very apprehensive as to how ini a on was to be accomplished. A long night of vigil and storytelling, a shimmering pool of bap sm, the anoin ng with oil and clothing with white robes came as something of a surprise. At the end of a long, life changing night of embrace by Christ and the commu-nity, as the Eucharis c feast ended, a final surprise was brought forward. To address the deep hunger of the newly bap zed, the church offered a bowl of milk and honey, sign of promises fulfilled, sign of community, prosperity, and peace, and yet another foretaste of heaven’s banquet. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY HOUR For Priestly and Religious Voca ons

You are invited! (all ages are welcome)

Prayer and Fellowship - 3rd Wed. of every month (3/19/14) from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, 3888 Paducah Drive, San Diego CA 92115. Pray with and get to know those who dedicate themselves to Christ through a life of prayer and service. For more in-forma on, call the Office for Voca ons, Diocese of San Diego at 858-490-8346.

A ques on o en asked secretly by many young men is, “How do I know that God is calling me to priesthood?”

Too o en, because of a lack of drama c evidence, many of the subtle hints and gentle nudges which accompany the call to priesthood can easily be overlooked or misin-

terpreted. Reading I Kings (19:11-13) we see that the great prophet Elijah heard God’s call, not in an earth-

sha ering event, a mighty storm or blazing fire, but in a ny whispering sound. So, IF THE NOTION OF

PRIESTHOOD GENTLY PASSES YOUR MIND FROM TIME TO TIME, SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE. IT COULD BE A HINT.
