    FR ADRIANS CORNER

Lent is upon us and this Wednesday is Ash Wednesday andthe beginning of the Holy Season. Please note the mes andlocaons of liturgies for Ash Wednesday youll find these inthe Parish Bullen. We have a Parish Retreat this year beginning on March 3 at allMasses and then during the week for our English-speaking andHispanic Communies three evenings for both. Each eveningwill begin at 7:00 with Mass and finish at 8:00. Parishioners

are busy and we thought that one hour of reflecon for Lentwould be not asking too much. I hope you agree. Our ParishRetreat takes place in the Parish Chapel. Please see the ParishBullen over the coming weeks for details.

Conducng the Parish Retreat is a Franciscan Bishop fromHonduras who also happens to be from Ireland. He is BishopMichael Lenihan, OFM and he is Bishop of La Ceiba, Honduras.Fr. Michael has been a missionary in Central America for 30years and was made a bishop last year. He and I were studentsin Rome many years ago and I am delighted that he said yes tothe invitaon to travel from Honduras to be with us at San LuisRey. Michael is a countryman, a farmers son who grew up in asimple Irish family. Today, his younger brother runs the farmin Limerick, Ireland, and I know that Bishop Michael likes towork with his brother on the farm during his vacaons. I be-lieve that you will like him very much and that he will havesome good reflecons to share with us in Lent.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people in-volved in the Music Ministry at the Parish. We have a tremen-dous number of truly wonderful men, women and childrenvolunteering to sing and play music instruments at our liturgiesevery Sunday. I want to thank our outstanding Samoan Choir,Trinity Choir, Shepherds Choir, Sunday Ensemble, Childrensand Youth Choirs. On your behalf I want to thank Lupe Rios,Tavale Tavale, David Coe, Laura Gibson and those who workalongside them for all the hard work and dedicaon to thisvital ministry. I know from my meengs with them that it is

their earnest hope to keep improving the quality of the musicand singing at the parish and parcularly as we approach HolyWeek and Easter.

Some people have asked me for the piece I read at Mass afew Sundays ago during my homily. I call it a Post-ChristmasReflecon Here it is:

When the song of the angels is slledWhen the star in the sky is gone

When the kings and princes are homeWhen the shepherds are back with the flock

The work of Christmas beginsTo find the lost

To heal the brokenTo feed the hungry

To release the prisonersTo rebuild the naons

To bring peace among brothers and sistersTo make music in the heart.

I would like to thank God for the blessed lives ofJoe Castore-na and Emma Chavez, parishioners who recently passed away.Emma struggled bravely with Lou Gehrigs disease she was abeauful woman who will be greatly missed. Joe was a longme parishioner and a good man who went home peacefullyto God.

    SOCIAL CONCERNS EASTERFOOD BASKET PROGRAM

Its me once again to think of Easter, the celebraon whichis the basis for our beauful faith! By sharing our love withthose who are less fortunate we can help others in a tangibleway while demonstrang our very real belief in the Resurrect-ed Christ. We oen plan our holiday dinners without stoppingto realize what a true blessing it is especially in these difficulteconomic mes - that we are able to provide for our families.

Sadly, too many hard working people in our community arenot able to do so. Oen we take our good fortune as a givenrather than consciously remembering that it is truly a gi fromGod. God gives to us so generously and in return He only asksthat we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Sharing whatwe have is the most sincere proof of our love of God shownthrough our love of others.

With your help we will give out holiday food baskets againthis Easter. Thanks to our food providers we can put togethera food box with a good holiday feast with all the trimmingsplus a lile extra for just $40.00 per family!

When you put your donaon in the collecon, please be sureit is clearly marked for an Easter Basket. We will gladly ac-cept donaons of turkeys, hams and canned goods which weask that you bring directly to the Social Concerns Departmentin the Loreo House during our normal business hours Tues-Sat. 8:00am-4:00pm). We appreciate you checking the expira-on dates on all donated cans and packages of food.

If you have any quesons, I can be reached at 760-547-0708.Thank you for all you do to help us feed the poor during theholidays and throughout the year. God bless you all.

    Feliz Cuaresma! Padre Adrin
