From the Principal
On Thursday, April 12, North will host a meeting for the
parents/guardians of incoming ninth grade students in an effort to
increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its
consequences on individuals, families and our community. This is
the tenth year we will be hosting this most worthwhile program. You
are welcome to join us at 7 pm in North’s auditorium for the ninety-
minute program during which valuable information will be provided
about this critical health and safety issue. If you have any concerns
or questions about underage drinking, this is the program to attend.
We continue to acknowledge the accomplishments of our students.
The following four North seniors were inducted into the National
Technical Honor Society as a result of their excellent academic
achievement. A ceremony was held at Maryvale High School on
March 20 to recognize all qualifying students. To qualify, students
must have an 85% average at their home school, a 90% average in
their courses at the vocational center and maintain a 95% attendance
rate.

Congratulations to Annabeth Collis, grade 10, Afton Hulse, grade
11, and Samantha Wutz, grade 11, whose poems, “Standardize”,
Fireflies, and “All of Us” were selected to be read at the
Williamsville Poetry, Music, Art and Dance Celebration on Sunday,
April 22, at 3 pm at East High School. Their poems were selected
from several hundred entries that were submitted from the
elementary, middle and high schools across the District.
Congratulations to our students who will be inducted into North’s
National Honor Society on April 11. Please see page 3 of this
newsletter for a complete list of inductees.
Last month, DECA members competed at the State Career
Conference in Rochester. Please see page 2 for a list of students who
participated.
Have a wonderful spring! I look forward to seeing you at the
numerous athletic and extracurricular activities in the months ahead.

WILLIAMSVILLE SEPTSA
The Williamsville school district has an active PTSA, that includes a Special
Education PTSA unit. One of only four in WNY, WCSD SEPTSA provides
guidance, information, advocacy, direction, and support for parents of students
with disabilities and those that excel. SEPTSA has monthly programs with
local topic experts that address current trends and topics, lunch and dinner
informal gatherings providing parents an opportunity to discuss items of
importance, extensive books, resource materials and information, networking
and outreach, and connections to local programs and service providers.
Please watch for the upcoming flyer for our next evening program to be held
on Thursday, February 15, 2018. The presenter will be Mr. Dave Whalen,
President of Williamsville SEPTSA and adjunct professor at Niagara
University. He will be speaking on the topic of person-centered planning and
transitioning from high school to adult life. The goal of independent living will
be explored through the integration and collaboration of various resources
including the individual, the family, the school, support systems and the
community. Advocacy and self-determination will be explored and
emphasized as a means to individual success.

NEW – NEW YORK STATE
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NYS will require all 9th and 11th graders to provide a physical
examination for the upcoming 2018-19 school year moving forward.
Physicals must be dated after September 1, 2017 to qualify for this
mandated exam. It should be submitted before December 2018.
The district recommends that private physicians perform these
exams as they know the student and have generally followed them
for years. The new mandated Physical requirements will be Grades
K, 1st Grade, 3rd Grade, 5th Grade, 7th Grade, 9th Grade and 11th
Grade.
A District Health Appraisal Form is available in the nurse’s office,
main office and on the District web site. After it is completed, please
return it to the nurse for the student’s file. Students frequently have
yearly physicals, so this is an ideal time to have the form completed.
If you have any questions, contact the school nurse at the number
above. If
your child needs a physical over the summer, you should CALL
NOW, as the summer appointments fill up quickly.
In addition, current 11TH grade students will need a 2nd Meningitis
booster shot BEFORE they enter 12th grade in the fall of 2018, or
their first dose by age 16. All Meningitis vaccines are due the
FIRST DAY classes start in September or your child may be
excluded from school. Please make an appointment NOW before the
summer begins! A reminder letter will be sent in April and June.
HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES Kids will mostly eat what’s available at home, so it is important to
make sure kids have healthy food choices. As adults, we need to
control the supply line to help children develop healthy eating habits
as adults.
- Work fruits and vegetables into the day by keeping them
available, along with yogurt, peanut butter, whole grain
crackers and cheese.
- Serve lean meats and other good sources of protein such as eggs
and nuts.
- Serve whole grain bread and cereals to increase fiber.
- Limit fat intake by avoiding deep-fried food.
- Limit fast food and low nutrient snacks, such as chips and
candy. You don’t need to ban them completely, but they should
be a special, “once in a while” treat.
- Limit sugary drinks, such as soda and fruit flavored drinks.
Even some “sport” drinks are high in sugar. Encourage milk
and water.
NURSE’S NOTES
continued….
MOM, MY EYE IS RED! Many students come to the health office thinking they have “pink
eye”, or conjunctivitis. Here are some differences to keep in mind.
This list is meant to be a point of reference before consulting your
physician.
- Cold symptoms usually involve nasal congestion and
coughing. Some people may also experience watery, red eyes.
See a doctor if the cold is worse after five days or there is no
improvement after ten days.
- Allergy symptoms usually involve sneezing and itchy red eyes.
- Wearing contact lenses can cause pain, redness, irritation, but
usually no drainage, if they are old or worn more than
recommended.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis will have significant redness, with a
thick green or yellow drainage. This requires a visit to the
doctor’s office and antibiotic eye drops.
- Viral conjunctivitis will also have significant redness, but the
eye will be very teary. Your child will complain of a gritty
feeling in the eye. When he/she wakes up his/her eyelids will
be stuck together with a clear sticky drainage (not green or
yellow). This condition is highly contagious, but, as it is viral,
there is no treatment. It usually starts in one eye and will travel
to the other eye in a day or two. The best treatment is a cold
compress and chilled moisturizing drops, for comfort, until the
virus runs its course. The student should be kept at home.
When in doubt contact your physician for diagnosis and treatment,
but not all eye redness is caused by a bacterial infection.
Antibiotic eye drops given when not needed can be harmful to the
eye.
EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS Please make sure your child’s emergency contact information and
phone numbers are updated in WITS. It is a problem when we
cannot reach a parent or guardian in a health emergency because
work numbers are no longer valid or cell numbers have changed.
Please contact the guidance department at 626-8507 with any new
or updated information.
