FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends in Christ, Can you remember your First Communion Day? Today we rejoice with the celebra on of First Holy Communion for 179 young people in our parish. This is an increase of 35 over last years’ totals. Because a majority of this year’s class did their prepara on in the Spanish track (140 to be exact) we have sched-uled two extra Masses this weekend to tend to that need with a 1pm Spanish Mass on Saturday and a 2pm Spanish Mass on Sunday. The remaining 39 first communicants were given their choice of which of the English Masses they wished to par cipate in to receive their First Holy Communion. I offer my hear elt congratula ons to all the First Communicants and their families. Hope-fully this is just the beginning of an ever growing deeper rela onship with God for them. Many thanks also to those who made this occasion so wonderful, es-pecially those who prepared the children so diligently for this special day in their faith lives. This is also the me of year for gradua ons and commencement exer-cises. I would like to thank the small but dedicated commi ee that put on the Golf Tournament (and has been doing so for 12 years now) to raise money for scholarships. This year, nine gradua ng seniors have successfully completed the applica on process and wri en essays that have been deemed worthy to make them eligible to receive a scholarship. The 9 recipients will be the beneficiaries of $ 4,900.00 in scholarship money this year. In reading the essays I was struck by some of the stories and touched by the sincerity coming from the minds and hearts of these young people in our parish. I was blessed with the opportunity to present the awards to the graduates from Plant City High School this past Tuesday evening. The remaining awards will be presented at the various High Schools in our area this week or soon therea er and the checks will go directly to the colleges where these eager students have been accepted. Next weekend will be the beau ful celebra on of Mother’s Day. All of our moms in the parish will receive a special blessing. I will not be with you due to my commitment to preach at all of the masses at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Spring Hill. Please pray that this Mission Coopera ve preaching assign-ment goes well and that my strength holds up for all seven masses at that par-ish. While I enjoy these MCP s nts I do not like that they take me away from you especially on a significant holiday. As we do every year, you can remember your mother, living or deceased with a spiritual bouquet. You can use the enve-lopes in the pew and write your mom’s name on it. If you would like a card to present to your mom, they are available in the parish gi shop. I am very blessed to have my mom s ll with me and hope that she will be in good enough health to be with me in Spring Hill next weekend during my preaching mara-thon. The blessings of mothers, too many to count, but perhaps the ceremonial May crowning next weekend will remind us all how truly blessed with are to have Mary as our mother.
Peace in Christ, Fr. Tom J. Anastasia Pastor
