REFLECTION FROM SEMINARIA JUSTIN PASKERT
Today is Pentecost Sunday, feast which celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the birth of the Church. The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek which literally means the fi h day. This is the fi h and last day of Easter. A li le over ninety days ago on Ash Wednesday we embarked on a journey that led us to this day. We began our journey with fas ng and prayer through lent, looking towards Jesus’ death in Jerusalem. We then celebrated his Glori-ous Resurrec on from the dead trying to compre-hend the meaning of such an event. Last week we heard about Jesus Ascension into glory at the right hand of the Father and promise of the Holy Spirit. Up un l today the Apostles had only been witnesses to Je-sus’ story, but with the gi of the Holy Spirit they con nue the story. They are changed from a group of fishermen and tax collectors into the Church. They changed from a group of individuals into the Body of Christ which has a mission: “Go therefore, and make disciples of all na-
ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19-20) This event which occurred two thousand years ago is the reason that we are here today. The Apostles did as they were commanded. They bap zed and laid their hands on people so that others may receive the Holy Spirit. The presence of the Spirit in the Church has led her to con nuously preach the Gospel to all na ons, to every people and tongue. The gi of the Spirit is also in us. The day we came into the Church to be bap zed we were given the Spirit and made member of the Body of Christ. The day that we received the sacrament of confirma-
on we were given “the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once grant-ed to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost.” (CCC1302) This great feast day invites us to reflect on the presence of the Holy Spirit in our own lives. St. Paul tells us that the gi s of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, dis-cerning spirits, tongues, and interpreta on. (1 Cor12:8-10) He also tells us of the fruit of the Spirit as charity, joy, peace, pa ence, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, humility, fidelity, modesty, con nence, and chas ty. May this feast help us to be open to the presence of the Holy Spirit at work in the Church, to have the gi of witnessing the power of the Spirit and the courage to follow it where will lead.
