A Brief History of Pavia,Iloilo
Pavia was officially founded in 1862. How the town
got its nae is unclear! and has long been dis"uted
#1$ %he nae cae fro a certain &olonel Pavia of the
'"anish garrison in (loilo who was su""osedlyres"onsible for initially establishing a '"anish "resence
in the area.
#2$ )thers believe that the nae is a '"anish corru"tion
of the Hiligaynon word biya-biya! as the area wasoriginally considered a neglected "atch of land that
served ostly as a ca"ing ground for city
so"histicates and absentee landlords.

Pavia y ,ay! +ar-uis of Novaliches! whoeventually becae a "riest after his short
tenure in the Phili""ines fro 18/*180.
#0$ %he ore credible theory sees to be theoverlooed fact that the towns religious well*
being was "laced under the 3urisdiction and
su"ervision of the friars of the Augustinian)rder! and they si"ly naed the "lace in
honor of the town in Pavia! (taly! where the
