ABOUT SUSAN G. KOMEN®
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise
became Susan G. Komen®, now the world’s largest breast cancer organization and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against
breast cancer with more than $2.2 billion invested to date.
For more information about Susan G. Komen®, breast health or breast cancer, visit komen.org or call 1-877-GO-KOMEN.
OUR STORYBorn on a promise between two sisters — Nancy Brinker to her sister,
Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36 — Susan
G. Komen® is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots
network fighting to end breast cancer forever.
OUR PROMISEThe Susan G. Komen® promise: to save lives and end breast cancer
forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all, and
energizing science to find the cure.
OUR AFFILIATEMontana AffiliateIn 1995, with proceeds from its first Race for the Cure, Komen Montana
began its mission of providing breast cancer education and screening
throughout the state. The Montana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen was
officially formed in 1999 to carry out the promise of Susan G. Komen. An
existing group of dedicated breast cancer survivors, breast health
advocates and others continued to work tirelessly as volunteers. In 2007
the Affiliate hired its first Executive Director. In 2010 Komen Montana
achieved a landmark goal of having awarded over $1 million dollars in
grants throughout the state.
Since 1999, Komen Montana distributed 67 community grants totaling
almost $1.5 million to provide over 7,000 mammograms and distributed
education materials to tens of thousands of Montanans. One of the
greatest disadvantages for people living in Montana can be the access
to mammograms. Priority funding has been for free mammograms to
women in impoverished, rural areas.
Idaho Affiliate
Komen Boise and Komen Coeur d’Alene were both founded in 1999.
Komen Boise originally covered 5 counties in southwest Idaho but later
expanded to cover 19 counties in southwest and central Idaho. Komen
Coeur d’Alene covered 5 counties in Northern Idaho.
In April 2012, Komen Boise united with Komen Coeur d’Alene to become
Komen Idaho and cover 28 counties in southwest, central, and northern
Idaho. In April 2015, Komen Idaho expanded to cover all 44 counties in
Idaho, providing services in Eastern Idaho for the first time.
Since 1999, Komen Idaho has granted over $5.4 million that stays in our
local service area and is dedicated to breast cancer awareness,
education, screening, support and treatment in Idaho.
Idaho Montana Affiliate
In June 2015, The Idaho Affiliate and the Montana Affiliate merged to
form Komen Idaho Montana. The merging of the Affiliates strengthens
Komen presence in both states allowing for more focus on the mission
of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever.
OUR PEOPLEEach year Susan G. Komen® Idaho Montana enlists the help of hundreds
of volunteers to put on the Race for the Cure® in Boise, Helena, Coeur
d'Alene and Pocatello.
OUR SUCCESSEnsuring quality of care, Komen Idaho Montana has played a critical role
in supporting our 100-county service area grantees with funding for
breast health screening mammograms, diagnostic services, patient
assistance, and educational programs. Remarkable programs that have
made a positive breast health impact for women and men who
otherwise could not afford it.
OUR IMPACTEnergizing Science: Since 1995, Komen Idaho Montana has invested over
$6.9 million in community grants and national research. Up to 75% of
the net proceeds stays in Idaho and Montana’s 100-county service area,

VOLUNTEERING WITH KOMEN IDAHO MONTANAVolunteers play a vital role in the Susan G. Komen® Idaho Montana's
mission. Their passion and commitment is what makes our Races
successful. Today, thanks to more than 100,000 survivors and
volunteers/activists, Susan G. Komen® is the world’s largest, most
progressive grassroots organization fighting breast cancer.
SO WHY VOLUNTEER...It’s fun. It’s rewarding. And you’ll meet some truly incredible people
when you volunteer for the Komen Race for the Cures. The success of
the Race depends heavily on the support we receive from hundreds
volunteers in the months leading up to the Race and on Race Day.
WAYS YOU CAN VOLUNTEER…Volunteer signs-ups will be available in the Spring for the Boise and
Helena Races and in the Fall for the Coeur d’Alene and Pocatello Races.
Positions will be posted on the Komen Idaho Montana website
www.komenidahomontana.org.
Please keep in mind that not all volunteers positions are on Race Day so
you can still volunteer and participate in Race for the Cure.
If you have questions about volunteering please do not hesitate
contacting Komen Idaho Montana at
