Traci Ayris Chairman’s Report…. Traci Ayris It's hard to believe that we are already nearing the half-way point of our racing season, it hardly feels like Summer is here at all! Weather-wise we've had a bit of a mixed bag so far: some races have been postponed following extreme predicted winds while other races were sailed on mirror seas. Due to my own time and previous work commitments I've been unable to make a commitment as a full-time crew member on a boat this season, instead, I've been out sailing when I can on many different boats and I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I joined Andy and the Two True crew for an Offshore race, I've raced down the coast on Another Planet, jumped aboard Rapid 1 and Dr Feelgood for the odd Twlilight race and (almost) sailed an inshore with Rob Sellick on Young Einstein. Perhaps there are other racing members out there at the moment who also could be finding it hard to commit to a full Summer campaign but, as I'm finding, that doesn't mean one has to give up sailing altogether. Many of our Skippers are always happy to grab an extra hand on race day and the social aspect of jumping aboard different boats can be extremely educational and in the main, always enjoyable. The recent combined Twilight race hosted by the RSAYS saw a fleet of fifty boats racing in the river. Whilst REX appreciates that some skippers eschew river racing, there are others who enjoy races such as the Portline Cup simply because they provide exciting close quarters racing. It was great to see some club boats who don't usually make it to our regular twilight races out racing in the river as well that night. The next combined twilight will be held in the leadup to Lincoln Week. Hosted by the CYCSA, this race will be conducted along the same lines of our usual twilight races in that the course will be set out in open gulf waters with no river component. You may have noticed the J80 around our club during the Premiers Cup. I seized the opportunity to head out with Ray and Sandra (JBoat agents) and Rob Sellick for a bit of fun and even in an extremely light and flukey river breeze the boat was fun to sail. As I understand, a number of boats are under consideration at this point in time but my short ride aboard the J80 had me thinking forward to the day when, thanks to the CYCSA/RSAYS Sail Development Committee, we will be able to program some exciting inter-club match racing for a fleet of brand-new, versatile one-design boats. Looking forward in the shorter term, a number of activities and events are in the planning for Easter/ Anzac Day at Port Vincent. Mostly, it's not a lot of fun to set ground tackle when you're aboard a racing yacht so if your boat is "windlass-less" a marina berth should be booked as soon as possible. Our Port Vincent Marina is expected to be extremely popular with recreational boating enthusiasts and it would be a pity to turn away our own members during that holiday season if the marina is fully booked. In closing, we thank our valued sponsors and I urge you all to recognise and consider them whenever possible. I myself am looking forward to serving some of Greg Patten's most excellent Canegrass Lamb (available at the Central Market) for my family Christmas dinner and there's no doubt at all that a few Yalumba, Penfolds and Georges wines will be consumed along the way. On behalf of the Racing Executive I take this opportunity to wish all racing members and their families a safe and most happy festive season. I also thank my fellow REX Members, volunteer Duty Crew and our Racing Manager Jess Hargreaves for their time and hard work to date and I hope they enjoy a wonderful Christmas break until racing resumes again in the New Year.

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

Racing Association Sponsors Racing Association Sponsors -- 20102010--20112011

Hello from the Race Office!

Christmas is almost here, and we’re nearly halfway through the 2010-2011 Season, with

all series well and truly under way.

The Premier’s Cup Regatta was held over the weekend of the 20-21st November, and

was a successful Regatta with a fleet of 24, including CYCSA, RSAYS and PASC entrants.

Congratulations to Geoff Boettcher and the boys from SMB 3.5 for winning the

Premier’s Cup, and also to Trevor Conyers and the crew on No Eye Deer for winning the

J24 Southern Cross Cup.

A special welcome from the Race Office to a couple of new Sydney 38s who have joined our fleet recently: Asylum

(Derek Morrison) and White Knight (Transfusion – David Knights). These arrivals bring our fleet of Sydney 38s to a

total of 5, which is great for the Club.

Thanks to all those boats who completed in the recent Combined Twilight Race with the RSAYS. I have had good

feedback from this event, and it is a bit of fun to shake things up a bit sometimes.

Good luck to the CYCSA boats who have entered in

this years Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race:

Two True, Shining Sea, and SMB 3.5—we’ll all be

gunning for you on Boxing Day.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas and a

peaceful 2011.

I hope you all have a great Christmas break—see

you next year! Jess

The 2010 ‘Georges’ Premier’s Cup Regatta / J24

Southern Cross Cup was held over the weekend of

the 20-21 November, and consisted of 3 races: 2 x

Windward Leeward races on the Saturday and 1 x

Long Inshore on the Sunday.

It was a successful Regatta, with thanks going to

Race Officer Neil Burford and the rest of the duty

crew for their hard work.

We had beautiful weather conditions for the weekend, which enticed a nice sized fleet of 24 entrants from

the CYCSA, RSAYS and PASC to come out and race.

Congratulations to the winner of the Premier’s Cup—Geoff Boettcher and the crew from Secret Men’s

Business 3.5; and congratulations also to Trevor Conyers and his crew from No Eye Deer for winning the

J24 Southern Cross Cup.

The Premier, Mike Rann was unable to attend the presentation, however we were pleased to have his

representative, Frances Bedford MP available to make the presentations. Also in attendance were Terry

Reilly and Wayne Thompson from Yachting SA, who took advantage of the Regatta to present their

awards to Andrew Saies (Sailor of the Year) and Ron Yeates (Presidents Award).

DECEMBER 2010

The Queen of the Gulf Regatta was postponed on the 30th October and rescheduled for Saturday the

11th December. The weather forecast was not good with N/W to W, with an average of 25knots plus in

the afternoon.

At 1100 the wind at the Black Pole was 23knots gusting to 29knots - causing concern for the RO regarding

the J24 fleet. At around 1300, the small fleet of 8 Div 1 boats, 4 Div 2 boats and a few J24s were in the

start vicinity.

Course (Div 1): 3 laps1.2miles windward leg 300 degrees.

(Div 2 & J24): Same as Div 1 apart from 0.8miles on the windward leg.

At approx 1310 a squall of 28 knots, rain and a big swing to the west caused the RO to delay the start,

postpone all J24 racing for the day, and reset the course to 270 degrees.

Div 1 got off to a clear start on starboard tack at 1325 with 22knots. Most yachts had 1 reef and No 4 or 5

headsail, handling the conditions easily. About 100m into the race, ‘Asylum’ ripped the main just below

the 2nd batten, and due to this major damage retired from the

race. The rest of the fleet continued on, with only 2 yachts

attempting to fly spinnakers on the first downwind leg in the

22/24knot prevailing winds. Both had disasters and ‘Shining

Sea’ bolted away from them. On the 2nd downwind leg there

was more drama with ‘3 Cool Cats’ headsail thrashing out of

control for most of the leg. On the 3rd and final downwind leg,

the wind eased to 16 knots with ’Shining Sea’ and others

carrying kites to the finish line.

Well done ’Shining Sea’ - First and Fastest!
