Brief description

Animal welfare is a growing field of science and is gaining

more recognition within the veterinary profession as a

necessary competency for every veterinarian. This course

will focus on understanding the basic concepts behind

animal welfare science, ethics and law, and how these

concepts are relevant to veterinarians in Asia. It will also

look at how animal welfare can be assessed through a

hands-on workshop on animal welfare assessment. Website:

Animal Protection Index (API)

• A ranked index of animal welfare policy and legislation in a range of countries.

• Animal welfare policy and legislation reviewed and assessed against specific indicators.

• CVOs can expect to receive, for review, their country report by the end of September.

• The consultation period will run for approx. 6 weeks.

• The website will be public soon after the end of the consultation.

Mission Statement

• To work towards the highest possible animal welfare standards globally through active cooperative participation in the OIE’s consultation process of developing internationally recognized animal health and welfare standards.

• To provide a forum for information sharing and discussion on matters of common interest and, when there is a consensus , international cooperation among animal protection NGOs to present a strong, clear and unified common position on the implementation, enforcement and promotion of OIE animal welfare standards, to improve the lives of animals.

• To bring together the collective expertise and experience of the world-wide animal protection NGO community to contribute to OIE activities related to animal welfare.

Vision Statement

• The ongoing refinement and enhancement of OIE animal welfare standards will reflect advances in animal welfare science and ethically-based societal expectations. This enhancement of standards will be complemented by improvement in effective implementation of adopted standards by the 180 OIE members, with the active involvement, where appropriate and where there is a consensus, of ICFAW in developing projects by member organisations and supporting OIE-led, or other agreed, promotion and implementation initiatives.

• The OIE values its partnership with ICFAW, whose membership will be truly international and include experience and expertise to cover all species.
