Page 10: Draft 3 planning

Conventions Use/develop/challengeHow?Why?

Similarities/Differences

1. Conflict with friends/family.

Use because in most drama films there is conflict and the resolution is them sorting it out.

2. Follows the characters journey.

Challenge, because ours doesn’t really follow the characters journey because you only see snippets.

The family are all conflicting with each other because of an issue.

The differences is that it is about terminal illness not transgender.

The differences are that this follows all of the characters journeys as they learn new things.

Similarities are that they are students and experimenting and gain knowledge of different things.

Target audience

• Our opening sequence is Niche becauseReason Explanation

Not many films have transgender This would be the case because there isn't a wide range of target audience that would watch this type of film

Low budget film It wouldn’t be advertised everywhere therefore, not a lot of money would be spent on advertising

Independent Only made for specific audience as not many people are interested/comfortable watching this type of film.

Page 17: Draft 3 planning

Target audience Target audience details Details Why?

Age 15+ It would be 15 because that’s when teenagers would mature up and would realise what they want.

Gender Male, female Because male and females could both understand and possibly relate to some of the situation

Race/Ethnicity All Races and Ethnicity Because everyone is able to watch it and if they are not allowed it also good to see what people go through even in these situations

Religion All except Christianity and some of Islam where they would say they should be secure. Because they would say that there's a cure how it would be with the same sex,

because they might get offended how they would watch something that they wouldn’t be allowed

Page 18: Draft 3 planning

Target Audience detail Details Why?

Location In the UK It wouldn’t be in international as it’s a niche audience, and It would only be shown in the UK as it can be restricted in some places because its all about identity

Social Class Any class Anyone can experience the dilemma of seeking there identity

Interests/hobbies They can all have different interests hobbies - All

because it wouldn’t stop those kind of audience to watch identity films.

Social Group All Because the people who are in different groups such as punks can also seek identity

Target audience

Page 19: Draft 3 planning

Target audience Detail Why?

Sexuality All Because this film has to do with sexuality, so its good for both sexes to know what other people would go through and to see what people’s opinions would be.

Profession/Role All It would be all because everyone has the right to watch these kind of films if wanted, this would mean more people would be aware about these types of situation that some people would go through

Target audience

Page 20: Draft 3 planning

B)Target AudienceThe reason why would our target audience would be interested in the idea

The reason our target audience would be interested in the form of our film

The reason why our target audience would be interested in our film due to the genre conventions

• The majority of the target audience would be possibly be transgender and therefore they can relate to a substantial amount of issues raised within the film the situations

• The Niche audience may want to learn about particular issues that may be expressed regarding the life of a transsexual

• The fact that a significant number of the target audience would be transgender, means the form of the flashbacks may relate back to their way of thinking

• Our target audience would be attracted to our film as they know it is a drama film, this is due to the recognisable drama conventions such as suicide and prejudice.

• The fact that the target audience are used to these familiar conventions ensures that they will be satisfied with the film

Page 21: Draft 3 planning

Uses Gratification theoryInformation Entertainment Personal identity Integration & Social

interaction Can be watched to

gain information such as..

Knowing people opinions thoughts about identity

How people deal with this situation

The people who are relatives/close to the person who wants to change their identity see how they would react towards them and what do they do would they

advice them to something better

tell them not to do what that person thinks of doing

how would the person deal with this situation

• People could see this film as entertainment because it is something different and is not really talked about.

• Also, if people haven’t heard of transgender people before then it gives them entertainment as they are learning a part of them.

• In addition they can get entertainment from seeing what a transgender person’s thoughts could possibly be. E.g. suicide.

• The audience getting an insight of a trans persons life

• People may understand how tough it is to not be in the right body as they expect

• The audience realising being trans does not affect who they like

• Realising not to judge people on their gender but try to accept different people

• The majority of the target audience will be transgender, this film will allow them to engage, as they have so much in common

• People who watch our film may inform people on what they have seen and how their views and opinions of transgender may have changed, because of the film

• Friends and family of those who are transgender may understand some of their issues of transgender in greater detail

Page 22: Draft 3 planning

BBFC rating

Standards How you are meeting standards in your film

15 • Strong language • Aggressive behaviour • Be able to understand

serious issues

Our film would be rated 15+

Person 1&2

Page 23: Draft 3 planning

Narrative style/structure

A) Non linear

B) Our opening sequence would be a teaser that establishes the character. It is also anachronic which involves a lot of flashbacks.• We decided to create the opening like this so it

creates enigmas and makes the audience have high anticipation of what will happen

• Get the audience on the edge of their seats

Page 24: Draft 3 planning

Narrative style/structure

Objective character identification • The viewer is given unique access to a characters point of view such as seeing things from the characters mind, dreams or memories.• our opening sequence contains a lot of memories (flashbacks) which lets the audience on a insight.

Restrictive narrative- gives minimal information regarding the narrative.• Our opening sequence contains a serious enigma, which is if she jumps in front of the train or not.• This would influence an audience to want to watch the rest o the film.

C) Unrestricted narrative-tells all the information to the audience and not hiding anything from them.• Our opening sequence focuses on transgender so, an example were we give the audience hints is when the main character has a flashback of herself searching ‘transgender’.

Page 25: Draft 3 planning

TimeExplanation

Flashback • There are flashbacks in our opening sequence which change the linear progression of the story.

• We used flashbacks to demonstrate memories of the past

• This allow the audience to gain perspective on the events

Discourse time(summary) In reality, the scene where the main character is having flashbacks at the train station, happens in 15 minutes but we shortened it to two minutes, and will still get out point across.

Time

Person 2&3

Page 26: Draft 3 planning

Strauss Theory

• Strauss’ theory doesn’t relate to our opening sequence because there are no villains and heroes etc.

• This is because the girl is confused about her gender so there is not right or wrong, its about her finding herself.

Page 27: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory- Barthes

Enigma codes • Delays the ending/resolution • Sometimes left unsolved • Answer to enigmas contribute to our

enjoyment of resolutions (new equilibrium) In our opening sequence the enigmas would be:• If she jumps in front of the train or not

Page 28: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory- Barthes

Action codes • Codes of actions that lead audience to expect

contains consequences • E.g. Psycho which is a horror filmThe action codes in our opening would be:• The audience thinking that the character will

jump in front of the train

Page 29: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory- Barthes

Semantic codes• Meanings of characters, objects and locations • Learn from experience about the denotations

and connotations The semantic codes used would be:• The colour red on her clothing to represent

the danger of herself

Page 30: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory- Barthes

Symbolic codes• Oppositions and antitheses (light/dark)• Female= close fitting clothes, crossed legged

when sitting, female feature e.g. breasts etc • Male=baggy clothing, legs spread when sitting In our opening sequence we will need to

consider the male aspect as the main character will portray being a transgender.

Page 31: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory- Barthes

Cultural codes• Bring understanding and meaning to the text • References to things in popular cultures and

historical events In our opening there is not a cultural code

portrayed.

Page 32: Draft 3 planning

Narrative Theory

Todorov theory does not exist in our

opening sequence because…

Todorov theory has the 5 stages of the beginning till

the end in linear order, however our opening

sequence is non-linear as Jodie has flashbacks

Todorov theory also doesn’t exist in our opening sequence because he came up with, that there should be a new equilibrium but the audience doesn’t know what happens at the end as we leave in a cliff hanger so they wont see the new equilibrium

Finally, it also doesn’t exist because he says that there's one disruption, but Jodie has

more than one disruption, she has 4 flashbacks and

each flashback is a disruption

Page 33: Draft 3 planning

EnigmasEnigmas created How Why

When the character is about to jump.

It is a build up of adrenaline.

The audience don’t know whether she will jump or not.

When the character is drawing the suit.

The audience are confused as to why she’s not drawing a dress.

The audience start guessing and assuming things.

Page 34: Draft 3 planning

CharactersSocial Group Represented How Why?

Jodie – changing her identity

It would be the people who are lesbian/gay/homosexual/straight etc.

Because it has to do with identity and this can show how other people would deal with the same situation

Monae & Amy – her friends

This can be any social group

Because the friends can be anyone who is friends with the person, that is going through that situation

Monica – Jodie’s Mum parents Because the parents would understand what can be best for their children
