• Your task will be based on fufilling the technical roles of the production team in the Importance of being Earnest
• Technical/production roles could include:– stage manager– set design – costume design and/or construction– lighting design and operation– music/sound design and operation– properties creation and management.
You will need to provide written evidence to support your choice of resources and techniques.

Task 1 Preparation • As a class we will explore various drama techniques and how they
may used. We will also look at various ways of presenting Shakespeare and the nature of Shakespearian text.
• The teacher will explain and discuss the selected text. You will be given an opportunity to negotiate for a technical role. This might apply to the entire production or to a specific scene.
• Your teacher will spend time going over the requirements of the role with you.
• For example lighting design and operation may be undertaken by one person, or may involve a team working on a scene each and co-operating on the overall design. To achieve excellence you need to develop and sustain an accomplished role. Make sure that you are clear exactly what your role entails, write your job description into your portfolio and check it with your teacher.
Stage Manager
• The stage manager is responsible for organizing the production, communicating across different disciplines (e.g., between the director and the backstage crew, or the actors and production management), and keeping everything running smoothly.
• This refers not only to seamless management of the technical aspects of a production, but of the human aspects as well.
Set Design
• The set designer is responsible for the 'look' or physical appearance of the stage for a play, whether in rehearsal or performance. It reflects the way that the stage looks in regard to props, actors, shapes and colours. The stage picture should express good principles of design and use of space. It should be visually appealing for the audience or should express the show's concept. The set design is also crucial for the creation of atmosphere for the audience.
• The scenic designer is responsible for working with the director and other members of the production design team to create an environment for the production.
Costume Design/Construction
• Costume designer is the person responsible for the design of the appearance of the characters in a performance. This usually involves designing or choosing clothing, footwear, hats and head dresses for the actors to wear, but it may also include designing masks, makeup or other unusual forms.
• He or she is considered part of the "production team," alongside the director, scenic and lighting designers.
Lighting Designer/Operator• The role of the lighting designer
within theatre is to work with the director, set designer, costume designer, and sometimes the sound designer and choreographer to create an overall 'look' for the show in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety and cost.
• The Lighting Board Operator is the technician in charge of operating all lighting equipment for a performance, with the possible exception of the spotlights/follow spots, which are usually handled by one or more designated spotlight operators.
Music/Sound Designer/Operator
• Conceptual Sound Design is different from technical sound design, but \ The designer must first read the play and talk to the production's Director about what themes and messages they want to explore. It is here that, in conjunction with the director and possibly the composer, the designer decides what sounds he will use to create mood and setting of the play.
• The sound operator (also commonly called production audio engineer, audio engineer, sound board operator, sound technician, sound mixer or A1) is the person responsible for the overall and total execution of the sound design during the performance.

Props Creation and Management
• A property designer, or prop designer' is a person who designs props for use in theatre, film, television, etc. Prop designers work in liaison with the costume designers, set designers and sound designers, under the direction of the art director or Technical Director.
• Besides the obvious artistic creations made in the prop workshop, much of the work done by the property designer is research, phone searches, and general footwork in finding needed items.
Task 2 Planning• Discuss with each group how their individual scenes will fit into this overall framework
from a technical point of view. Whether your responsibility is for a single scene or for the full production, you will need to schedule regular meetings with the full production team to ensure that consistent decisions are being made. Make note of the overall framework, the transitions between scenes and your own individual technical plan.
• Discuss with your director the overall framework of the production and how your scene will fit into this framework. . Record this framework in your portfolio.
• Your teacher will discuss with you the resources available in terms of budget, space, and technologies (lights, costumes etc). Draw up a production schedule as a full production team, and with the help of your teacher. You will also need to keep an annotated script with cues/prop requirements etc.
• This needs to include:- agreed times for production meetings; dead-lines for research and sourcing of ideas, and for collection and construction of resources; rigging of technologies; technical rehearsals; dress rehearsals; performances; pack-out.
