2011- 1- 10, MondayMeasuring and marking out.

What I did

Today, I entered making my project. First, I measured the part of bottom, and its size is length 500 mm and width 300mm. Then I cut them out along the line by using across saw. The plywood is hard to cut; therefore I took a lot of time to cut one piece. There is reason that I didn’t use saw after winter vacation. But I also think today’s work was kind of great.

Change to my planI didn’t change my plan yet.

WhyBecause I think my plan still seems to be ok.

EmotionI was enjoying today’s work because I finished cut bottom part out.

What is next?I will measure and mark part of side where it will join with the part of bottom at next time.

2011-1-11, Tuesday

Today, I measured a part of side where it will joint with the part of bottom. These sizes are width 300mm and length 450 mm. Then I cut them out along the line by using genet saw. But I sometime couldn’t cut along the line therefore I thought I have to check whether along the line or not when I’m cutting them.

2011-1-14, Friday

Today, I finished cutting part of side and shaving the surface to make flat with a file. Then I write line to joint with part of bottom on the part of side by using the ruler. I think today’s work was great.

2011-1-17, Monday

Today, I started cutting part of side to joint with part of bottom by using across saw. But using this saw was hard to cut, therefore I changed to pull saw. The saw was better than across saw to cut.

2011-1-18, Tuesday

Today, I finished cutting part of side to joint with part of bottom. But the cut end of the wood was not flat. Then I noticed I had to keep watching line during cutting them. Therefore I had to fix it to make flat. I will be careful about keeping watch line when I ‘m cutting something. I will make surface of wood to flat at next time.

2011-1-24Cutting out base part of my tree

Today, I cut and made to flat surface of the wood by using pull saw and a smoothly plane, because when I was cutting them out I couldn’t along the line exactly, therefore the surface is rough and not correct size. By using the plane and pull saw I could fix it but it looks difficult. Also, I had some problem that the tree was lucking while having cut. Therefore I fixed it by using glue in older to reset to original shape, and to settle I was using the stopper as you can see in the picture. Then because of that, I have to wait. After finish this step, I made hole of the wood to join bottom part and side part by using a drill. When I had to use the drill, I was nervous because I haven’t used it before. But this problem was solved by my teacher he helped me.

WhyBecause I wasted time to fix problem therefore I have to finish it early.

EmotionI was completely happy because my problem fixed. Before it was fixed, I really worried about it therefore I was relived.

What is next?Next time I will continue making hole to join the two pieces by using the drill and wait for settling piece, which was lacking.

2011-1- 25- Tuesday

Jointing base of my tree bookshelf

What did I do?Today, I finished making hole on the wood by using the drill and jointing the base part by using a nail, driver and glue. But I first made mistake in the drill therefore one of the hole is beggar than other one; I have to fix it in the feature. In addition, I learned how to use the driver as pushing and rotating. After I finished jointing the base part, I marked and measured the side part, which will be support part of my tree bookshelf, and the size of the piece is width 300cm, length 600. First I cut them out by using gent saw but I noticed that is difficult to cut the piece, then I changed to cross saw. By using the cross saw I could cut out fast than before. Today I only finished cutting out one piece, therefore I will cut out one more next time.

Change to my planI think I have to fix problem that one of the hole is bigger than other one. Therefore my plan will be late than original one.

WhyBecause it didn’t need there and its looks so not good. Also they have 4 hole on the wood even though there only needs 3 hole.

EmotionToday, I’m completely happy because I finished jointing the base part, and I could imagine how my product will be.

What is next time?Next time, I will cut out one more piece and measure and mark out top part. I also hope that I will entire next work.

What did i doToday, I kept working on cut and mark out side of my tree book shelf by using pencil, ruler, tri square and a cross cut saw. The size of side part is width 300mm, length 600mm same as yesterday part. cutting this size of wood was very hard to cut out because the material is thick but this time, I could cut faster and easier than last time. I think because I now know how to cut and how difficult it is this helped me. As for the cause of

that is having experience. I think today's work was favorable and I also think I have to be more careful when marking out because It takes and can waste much time. Therefore I want to be more efficient next time.

title:cutting out and making out body part of my tree bookshelf to join top part

What I did Today, I started making body part to join top part and base part. To make body part as joining with top part and base part , I marked out by using ruler and pencil. After that, I started cutting out above the line, which I marked out, by using a pull saw.But its surface was rough therefore I had to make flat by using a smoothing plane. Using the smoothing plane is hard to use to me,so I changed to a file. After finished it, I tried to join with base part and I encountered problem that it doesn't fit well. To fix this problem, I changed side, where it would connect with based part, to right from left.

2011-02-11-FridayTitle:Jointing body part and base part.Today, I kept cutting out body part to join with base part by using a pull saw and test whether the base part and the body part could fit, and then It seems to be ok.After that I started making hole to join these part. To make hole, first I confirmed exact connecting place on body part and base part by tapping with nail and hammer.Then I made hole by using a drill and connect body and base part by using screw and screw driver as you can see a picture. In addition, I could see the part, it is base and body part,was pretty level by using a level ruler. After that, I marked out top part of my tree bookshelf which size is width 300mm, length 200mm.

2011-02-14-fridayDeciding where I will insert a partition shelf into the body part.Today, I measured that hight is the body part of my tree bookshelf by using a ruler and pencil to decide where partition plate insert the body part. Then I could see its hight is 440mm. After that, I measured size of book to know how big of book store to my bookshelf, and then normal side of book was 250 mm. Through the measurement I decided that a low of partition plate is inserted in the place of 250 mm and it will be used for bigger book. Then, between other part and higher partition plane is 150mm to 20 mm, therefore it will be for small books. To mark out line of that, I used a level ruler to write a straight line. After I finished this work, I started taking out body part from base part by using a screw driver to join with the partition plane.

2011-02-15-TuesdayTaking out body part from base part and making a cavity at both end of the base part.

Today, I kept working on taking out body part from base part by using a screwdriver. After I finished that, I stated making a cavity at both end of the base part to insert partition shelf. To make this cavity, my instructor helped me to make shallow cut at the body part of my tree bookshelf by using a machine with adjuster. By using the machine with adjuster, it could cut exact place where I marked out before. After that, I plane this shallow cut to make cavity by using chisel and wooden mallet. Having the chisel level, striking on the place where a top of handle of chisel with the wooden mallet to be flat cavity.When doing this working, I was careful about the do not dig this cavity.

Today, I kept working on that plane shallow cut to make cavity by using chisel and wooden mallet. Having the chisel level, striking on the place where a top of handle of chisel with the wooden mallet to be flat cavity.After that, my instructor helped me to cut top part and partition shelf out by using machine, and then I inserted partition shelf into the body part. Then I fixed body part and partition by using a clamp and I marked out point where will be made hole. After I finished that, I started

making hole at the point by using drill. To make hole, I used two different drill bit, one of these is thin and long which was used to make hole to inner part, and other one is bigger than another one which was used to fit with the top of the nail.

2011-02-21-MondayMaking hole by using drill.

Today,I kept working on making drill at point ,where I wrote at the body part and top part, to joint body part and partition part. To make hole, I used two different drill bit, one of these is thin and long which was used to make hole to inner part, other one is bigger than another one which was used to fit with the top of the nail as last friday. During I make hole, I noticed about one of holes are in wrong place, therefore I have to make hole at other place. After I finished making hole at the body part I screwed this part by using a screw drill.Then,I took screw out which I screwed before, and I started making hole bigger at the top part. But I couldn't finish today therefore I will finish next time.

2011-02-22-Tuesdayjointing partition shelf and body part.

Today, I finished making hole at top part of my tree book shelf, and then I finished making hole at the body part to be big than before by using a drill. In addition, I made new hole because I had noticed about one of holes are in wrong place yesterday. After that, I separated partition part from body part to joint them by using glue and screw. To joint body part and partition part, I first glued a surface of the cavity and connected partition part by using wooden mallet.Then I checked whether the body part and partition part is a right angle or not by using a square. When the body part and partition part was a right angle, I started jointing body part and partition part by using screw and a screw driver.After I finished jointing body part and partition part, I fixed these parts by using clamp.

2011-02-28-TuesdayScrewing and glueing top part and body part.

Today, I finished screwing and gluing top part and body part. To joint body part and top part, I first glued a surface of body part and screwed top part and body part by using a screw and a screw driver.Then I checked whether there is an opening between top part and body part , then I found there was fine opening. After I found it, I fixed this opening by using a wooden mallet, and then I tightened nail hard not to make the opening. Then I tried to be clear a line of the branch part at the piece to cut out it,and then I started cutting branch part of my tree bookshelf by using a saw and clamp.

2011-03-01-TuesdayCutting a branch shape part of my tree book shelf out.

Today, I kept working on cutting branch part of my tree bookshelf. The branch part has curvy line and straight line , then I decided to start cutting straight line part first. To cut it out, I first used a gent saw and a sliding clamp. But my instructor recommended to me using other saw, because the saw only has short edge and it was hard to cut it. Then I

changed saw to a cross saw, and the saw could cut them out fast than other one. After I cut along straight line , my instructor helped me to cut them along curvy line by using a machine. I finished making 3 piece of branch part in this class, and I also noticed about I need to draw 2 more piece of branch part.

Cutting branch shelf outToday, I kept working on cutting two pieces of branch part of my tree bookshelf. The 2 pieces is that I forgot marking out last class, then I marked out these piece by tracing with piece which is cut out before. After that, I started cutting straight line part by using a gent saw and sliding clamp. Then my instructor helped me to cut their along curvy line by using a machine, when I finished cut out. After that, I shaved surface and circumference of the branch shelf to fix shave. To fix the shave, I used a smoothly plane. Today, I couldn't finished cutting curvy line part therefore I have to finish it next time.

Cutting branch shape shelf out

Today, I kept working on cutting curvy line of the branch shape shelf by using a gent saw and sliding clump. Then, there were two problems in this process. One of the problems is that fix the piece on the desk by using a sliding clump because the piece is too little to fix it. Therefore it couldn't fix as tight, and move many time, so I change place many time

where is fixed with the sliding clump to solve it. Other one of problem is making shallow cut on the piece to cut it by using a cross saw, therefore I solve this problem by using a gent saw to make it. After that, I started shaving surface to make same shape and size.

2011-03-08Cutting and shaving branch shelf

Today, I finished cutting branch shelf out by using a gent saw and clump, also my instructor helped me to cut one of curvy line by using machine. After that, I started shaving projection of branch shelf because I cut 2 of curvy line of branch shelf by using a gent saw therefore I couldn't cut along the curvy line exactly and then there is several projection. To shave and fix the projection of branch shelf, I used a flat plane , half-round plane and sliding clump. However, using these plane took much time to shave to be along,so I was recommend my instructor to use the shave machine. With using this machine, I could reduce time for this work and then the surface of branch shelf become smoothy than before.

by myself, then my instructor helped me to decide about these things. Then, we started making hole on the body part to screw branch shelf with body part by using a drill,after we decide size of this plate and cut it out. After finished this work, I screw body part to body part by using screw and screw driver.

Today, I kept working on jointing branch shelf with body part of my tree bookshelf. To joint branch shelf with body part, I first found pair of branch which mostly fit each other. After that I made hole at one of branch ,where I tapped nail to leave point for knowing exact place, to connect with body part by using drill and then I screw it to body part by using a screw and screw driver. But, I was failed to screw to be flat at first time, therefore I took out the screw and then fixed it by using wooden mallet. After I finished this progress, I started marking and measuring body part to decide place where branch shelf will be connect by using pencil and ruler .

Making hole at the body part

Today, I kept working on marking and making hole at the body part of my tree bookshelf to join with branch shelf. First, I was marking and measuring body part to decide place where branch shelf will be connect by using pencil and ruler , but I took much time to decide it because first time I marked out near from the inserted shelf. So, I had to change this place. After that, I started making hole at the body part by using drill at

inside and outside of the body plate. To make hole at inside, the drill's length was too long for the space and then it couldn't reach at the place where I will make hole. Therefore, I changed to smaller one and then could finish making one part of hole.

Making hole at the body part and jointing branch shelf with body partWhat I didToday, I kept working on make hole at body part, and joint branch shelf with branch part of my tree bookshelf. To make hole, I first measure place of last one where the branch shelf will be joint,but I was at a loss about deciding palace and an interval between shelf. Then my instructor helped me to decide it, and then we decide the branch would connect bottom of body part. After that, I started making hole at the bottom of body part by using drill. First, making hole at inside and outside of body part,and then I was taping screw through the hole by using a hammer to examine exact place where I will make hole at surface of branch shelf to connect. Then, I started glueing and jointing branch shelf with body part by using glue, screw and screw driver after these process.

Jointing branch shelf with body part of my tree book shelf

What I didToday, I finished jointing branch shelf with body part of my tree book shelf. To finish it, I first take out one of branch shelfs , which was connected with body part at first time, because I didn't glue this before. After take it out, I glue surface of branch shelf and connect it with body part by using a glue , 5mm screw and a screw driver. In order to these step, I finished this process, then I intended to start making shelf which will be putted on the branch shelf. However, I couldn't find stuff to make it by myself, then I asked my instructor about it. When I asked my instructor about it, I was noticed about the surface of my branch shelf is not exact flat , then it will be tilt when the shelf putted on branch shelf by this problem. So, I recognized that I will have to fixed it by putting thin plate between the shelf and branch shelf next time. After that, I backed in my work,and then I made hole at the shelf which my instructor cut it out before by using drill and clump during I wait to find the stuff of the shelf.

2011-03-22-TuesdayChanging my plan

Today, I first finished making hole at the surface of the shelf, which will be putted on the branch shelf by using drill. Secondary, I shave the surface and circumference of body part and branch part of my tree bookshelf to make it be flat. When I finished this work, my instructor pointed out problem of my tree bookshelf. The problem is that using

plywood for shelf ,which will be putted on branch shelf,will make my bookshelf heavy and the body part will not withstand from this weight.To fixed this problem, I changed material light one than the plywood one. Then, I started and finished cutting this shelf, which size is length 250mm, width 180mm, by using a tenon saw and clamps.

I think my bookshelf is becoming close to biomimicry. The part of branch shelf will hold book and stuff is close to natural tree because natural tree is kind of support things.

2011-03-25-FridayPlaning and Making hole at the shelf of my tree bookshelf

Today, I kept working on making the shelf which I changed material to light one from plywood. To joint this shelf with branch part, I have to shave surface of this shelf and make hole. First, I shaved surface and circumference of these shelfs to be flat and same size by using plane, clump. With using the plane and clump to shave, I took much time for this work. Therefore I changed equipment to shaving machine. By this changing, I could reduce time and my shelf was completely flat.After I finished this work, I started working on making hole at surface of this shelf to joint branch shelf part. To make hole,I first measured and marked out where I will make hole by using pencil and ruler. Then, I started making hole by using drill.

Jointing the shelf with branch part of my tree bookshelf

Today, I was working on jointing the shelf with my bookshelf. To joint it with branch part, I first have to finish making drill at the shelf where I measured before by using drill and clumps. After I finished it, I taped screw through the hole to examine about where I should make hole at surface of branch part to joint it by using hammer. Then I made hole each surface of branch part by using drill, and joint shelf and branch part by using screw and a screw driver. When I finished this process, I encountered one problem that the branch part and the shelf don't fit as well. Therefore, I had to fix the problem by making other hole elsewhere.

Planing all surface of my tree book shelf and fix the problem

Today, I first worked on fixing the problem which is one of branch part and shelf didn't fit . To fix this problem, I have to cut thin wood to triangle shape for inserting under the branch part. However cutting thin wood was too hard to me, and then I was helped by my instructor. After making triangle shape, I tried to insert the one under the branch shelf, and It became definitely fit with the branch shelf. But I encountered other problem again; that is the hole at the shelf and where I have to screw didn't match because the two branches were not parallel. Therefore it couldn't connect through triangle and branch fitted. For solving this problem, I push two branch shelf to inside by my hand, and then I screw it at same time.After I finished these activities as thus, I started planning all surface of my tree book shelf by using sandpaper to lose square.

Planning all surface of my tree bookshelf and examining for jointing body part with base part

Today, I kept working on planning all circumference of my tree bookshelf, to lose square for safety by using sandpaper same as yesterday. After I finished that, I tested whether the base part and body part fit or not, and then the result of the testing is they fitted each other fortunately. I also tested about body part and base part are fitting as perpendicular by using level , and then it was definitely perpendicular. However the balance of these was not well because it didn't have support things, therefore , I decided to make support things later. In additional, I have to make canceling, where I made hole before to joint body part with base part, by using drill.

Changes to my planThe change I have made is making support things where is between body part and base part because there is instability. In my gantt plan, there wasn't included this process therefore it will take much time than I expected before.

WhyBecause I thought my product would be solid without support, therefore I didn't estimate that it would be instability and I have to make support for it.

What is next time ?In next class, I have to finish many things which are making canceling, making support and jointing body part and base part. Also, I have to clean a pencil mark off ,before jointing body part and base part, for preparation of painting.

EmotionAt the first of this class, I was enjoying with my work, but my feeling was suddenly changed to nervous when I found problem of my product that I didn't expect.

Erasing a pencil mark

Today, I first made canceling at the point ,where I will screw, to joint base part and body part by using drill. Then I started erasing the pencil mark that I had wrote for preparation to joint body and base parts. To erase the pencil mark, I first had used eraser but the pencil mark was thick and too hard to erase by using eraser. Therefore, my instructor recommended me to use sandpaper for it, then I changed method to this from using eraser. After that, I used two different kind of sandpaper, which are coarse one and fine one, and then pencil mark was erased as easy. In addition, I made change ,that I will not painting my product , when I erased pencil mark.

Changes to plan

The change I have made is that I will not paint my product. In my final design, it is intended to paint to brown as natural tree, but I changed my plan as thus.

WhyBecause I though material that I used is untouched tree color, and then I wanted to make natural product such as close to natural tree.

What is next time ?I have to finish erasing pencil mark and jointing body and base part of my tree bookshelf.

Today, I kept working on erasing pencil mark by using sandpaper same as yesterday. Firstly, I started erasing outer of my tree bookshelf, and then it was hard to erase pencil mark because there are many protuberances, specifically branch part. my tree bookshelf has three branch shelf as random, therefore it interrupt me to erase pencil mark when I tried to erase pencil mark nearing the branch part . Because of that, I was regretted about I didn't erase pencil mark before I joint body part and branch part. As thus, erasing pencil mark was much hard than I expected before, and then I actually couldn't finish this work at this class.

Cleaning my tree bookshelf up

Today, I was still continuing erasing the pencil mark by using sandpaper same as yesterday. As I mentioned about how was difficult to erase pencil mark yesterday, erasing pencil mark around the branch part was

still hard to me. Around this part, there is many line because I had measured many things ,such as length and width, to make all branch parts same when I was working on this part. Therefore, it always interrupt me to do it. In additional, there is other reason of this difficult is that I have to erase the pencil along direction of a wood line. Because of the difficult, I couldn't finish this work at this class.

Cleaning my tree bookshelf up and screwing

Firstly, I finished cleaning my tree bookshelf up by using sandpaper and then I plane circumference of my product by using flat plane. In planing process, I was careful to plane circumference to rounded as for finishing. Secondly, I started jointing body and base part of my tree bookshelf after I finished these processes . To joint base part and body part, I had to examine pair of base part and body part that I had decided such as A and B. Then I measure that my product is straight or not by using level before I screw it. After I confirmed my product is straight, I started screwing it by using screws and a screw driver.

Planning circumference of my tree book shelf

Today, I was working on jointing body part and base part by using screw and screwdriver, however there were some gap between body part and base part when it is connected. Therefore I asked about it to my instructor and then my instructor said that I have to take screw out and cut the top of triangle shape base part. After I asked it, I took screw out and then cleaned some pencil mark, which I didn’t notice, up.

Painting my tree bookshelf with varnish

Today, I finally finished cleaning pencil mark up by using a sandpaper, and then I jointed base part and body part. For joining base part and body part, I used level to make it straight, and then I screw these part together by using a screw and screw driver after I examined that body part and base part are jointed as straight. Then, I had big change that I will not paint my tree bookshelf with color, and then paint it with varnish instead of color. Before paint my tree bookshelf, I clean dust up by using brush not to stick on bookshelf with varnish. After that, I started painting bookshelf with varnish.

After I finished painting all part of my product, I checked whether or not it has place that is not painted. By checking, I found place that is not painted and then paint the place again. Then, I finally finished making my product as well as I have expected before. After making, I showed my product instructor and test

my product by storing many different types of books. The result of testing is very good and it is like ' tree of knowledge' when books were stored into my product.
