May proved to be a really fun month in Oxford, withvisits from the likes of the First Lady, Michelle Obamawhen she dropped by Oxford University in May (wehope she took some time out to read the latest DV8!). Also, another big name, in the form of International DJSuperstar Judge Jules spun the decks at Lava Ignite overthe Bank Holiday. Be sure to look out for the review onpage 9.

May was a really busy month here at DV8, we aredelighted to have local girl Syreeta Sims on the cover, thefirst in the series of local models that we will be bringingyou each month. A review of the making of the cover is onpage 10, we would also like to say a big thank you toBooty, Anne Veck, Nick Atkins Photography, and TheMalmaison for all their help in the photoshoot.

With May out of the way, and no more Bank Holidays onthe horizon, what does June have in store for us? With thesummer finally here, there is going to chance for somealfresco drinking. Check out our favourite beer gardens inOxford on page 6. TOP BEER GARDENS

UPFRONTJUNE/JULY

There are few better places tomake the most of the Britishsummer than sitting outside, sipping a chilled drink in abeer garden. Oxford has its fairshare to choose from and DV8decided it was about time tocheck some of them out forourselves.

Oxford RetreatStepping outside into thisspacious garden is an instantlyrelaxing experience. There isno indication that the throng ofpeople on Hythe Bridge Streetare nearby and there is adefinite feeling of being cut offfrom the outside world. As you sit in the comfy chairs

facing the pub building it evenlooks like it might be a logcabin and we began toappreciate why it is called theRetreat. Ideal if you’re lookingto get away from the dailygrind but it still has a pleasantbuzz about it in the evenings.

HouseIn the heart of the city, HouseBar’s garden offers an air ofsophistication and can easily befound off the High Street. Moving outside we foundourselves in a compact garden, fringed by neatly trimmedhedges, surrounded by white, minimalist seating, ideallysuited for kicking back with

some mates in the earlyevening sunshine. Couple thiswith a tasty cocktail menu(perhaps a Gecko, laced withspiced rum, apple schnapps, lime, apple juice and passionfruit) and you have a vibrantgarden, a stone’s throw fromthe hub of Oxford’s nightlife.

Head of the RiverPerhaps you fancy a morerelaxed drink, or maybe it’s themiddle of the day and you’remeeting some friends. Then theriver-side, sun-drenchedgarden at the Head of the Rivermay be just what you arelooking for. There is something particularlypleasant about sitting outsidedrinking on the banks of theriver. We at DV8 enjoyedwatching the world go by onthe bridge, while also seeingthe ducks swim past, narrowlyavoiding the slicing blades ofthe rowers’ oars. Alwayspopular, this large garden isalso within easy walkingdistance of the city centre.

So there you go, a little taster ofwhat Oxford has to offer. We at

The Lodge Relocating– DV8 were sad to learn that Oxford’s only gentleman’s club was beingforced to close their doors in June, however we are delighted to learn that their is a possibility ofthe venue relocating to near the icerink in the current venue of the Coven Club... only time willtell!River Island New Store – The shop space that used to be a Virgin Megastore has been empty fora few months. We were really pleased to see work being carried out to open as River Island. Withthe store opening over the next couple of weeks, we look forward to seeing what is on offer!Booty’s Next Top Model – After two months of auditions, photoshoots, interviews and more, themodel competition comes to an end with the winner of Booty's Next Top Model beingannounced at Roppongi on Friday 17th June. With what looks like a fantastic night, there willeven be a celebrity appearance from Maria Fowler of The only Way is Essex fame... Stick around aswe hear Lee Ryan will also dropping by Roppongi on the same night to celebrate his birthday!Emma Watson has allegedly decided to continue her studies at Oxford University. The HarryPotter star is expected to study English at the prestigious university and will enrol at Worcester

DV8 was out in force, and so wereall the Uni students, at the launchof Oxford’s newest club night –

‘Fresh’ at Number 9! We said it was goingto be a party not to be missed and weweren’t wrong!

It may have been Friday 13th, but no onewas having an unlucky night – especiallywith all the treats on offer!! Everyone wasgreeted with a lollipop at the door and thiscertainly made for some saucy photoopportunities! There was also a raffle forbottles of spirits and winner of the bestphoto from the night got free entry to thefollowing week! And there were certainlyplenty of good photos to be had – theOxford Halls were all out to play, including one who had been to a FancyDress Party – cue spicy Mexicans, cutePiñatas and racy Airline Stewardesses &French Maids! These were soon joined by aPub Golf Team who competed in the fancydress stakes with knee high socks, argyleknits and visors!!

The main bar and dancefloor were bothbuzzing right from opening – the bar hadthe lure of great drinks promos; includingcocktail jugs for £10 and shots for a mere£1.50! And the dancefloor had DJ Collinswith some banging old skool tunes! So ifyou haven’t been already make sure youare at the next Fresh night – DV8willcertainly be going back for more!

Stay up to date by looking Fresh up onFacebook and joing their group.

JUDGEJULES@LAVA IGNITE

The World Famous andInternationally-acclaimed Radio1 DJJudge Jules came to Lava & Ignite

this month for a very special bank holidaygig.

With the Ibiza party season just around thecorner, Judge Jules performed a warm upset of all the huge Euphoric Trance Tunesthat he will be playing at his DJ residency‘Judgment Sundays’ at Eden this summer.Joining him in the Main Room was Lava &Ignite’s very own Antoni James. Jules hasplayed many unforgettable gigs in Oxfordover the years, and really raised the roof atLava, blending his obvious passion fordance music with technically brilliant sets,The reaction from the crowd was everyinch like a true Ibiza crowd; wild, enthusiastic and loud - showing theirappreciation of the music!

Lava & Ignite have recently welcomed awhole list of international superstars, andwith the next bank holiday at the end ofAugust, we wonder who they will beinviting to host what we have no doubt, will be, another amazing night. Keep youears open!

We here at DV8 really love putting together a covershoot, and we have watched enough Americas Next TopModel to get to understand the basics of what to do! Sofor the first of our winners in the Face of DV8 competitionwe thought we would bring you a littleof what went on behind the scenes, and a chance to learn a little bit moreabout the various elements that wentinto making this monthʼs cover...

First up, the model herself. We had abrief interview with Syreeta lastmonth, where she talked about hermodelling background andaspirations, and not to mention what itmeant to be on the cover! Selectingthe model was an easy task, mainlybecause it was out of our hands as itcame down to the public to choose, sothat was number one ticked off the list.

Second on the list, was sourcing alocation. We wanted a setting that was cool, classy, sophisticated and sexy (do you think we ask for much?).The obvious and unanimous choice was the Malmaison.

We were fortunate enough to make use of their visitorsʼbar as the backdrop to the shoot. If you havenʼt had thechance to drop by, you really should.. with killercocktails, a classic setting, every visit is a smash hit.

How about the hair? We needed tochoose a styling that was befitting ofsuch a beautiful model, so we decidedwe would need an award winninghairstylist, and there is no one betterthan our very own columnist AnneVeck.

For the shoot itself, Anne created twovery different looks. The first was afunky afro style, which mixed thepopular styling from the 70ʼs withtodayʼs current trends in fashion.Syreeta wore a blush dress withcorsage (by Rare - £32, Booty Oxford)to compliment and complete the look.We should probably mention at this

point that Booty Oxford (you can find this cool little

“we wanted alocation that

was cool,classy,

sophisticatedand sexy”

boutique on the High Street) supplied us with the clothesfor the shoot. Booty is well established as a fashion storethat stocks high end fashion for todayʼs fashionista, looking for something a little different and edgier.

The second look was a moreformal grand look, with Syreetawearing a gorgeous long, oneshoulder, ivory ball gown (byMarchesa, and currently £230,instore at Booty). The hair wasfixed in a sexy style to match thedress, with the afro straightenedout, and expert care and detail putinto the stunning hairstyle. Wethink you will agree that thefresults were amazing.

We have to of course mention theperson who was the other side of the camera, NickAtkins, who did a splendid job of capturing our frontcover image (and if you head over to our facebook page

you will also find the whole collection of shots from boothshoots). Nick is a well established photographer withmany years experience in the field, snapping everythingfrom landscapes to fashion shows the world over. Youcan check out his portfolio at

www.nickatkinsphotography.comor his flickr sitewww.flickr.com/photos/nickatkins

Over the next month we will bewelcoming our other face of DV8winners to the cover, and wehope you enjoy the results asmuch as we enjoyed doing theshoots. And who knows, soon thecover model could be you? Ifyouʼre interested get in contact [email protected]

We at DV8 loved the lastVauderville Rave, so we werevery excited to learn that the

burlesque themed evening was making areturn over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The theme for the rave was based oneveryones’ darkside and the fall fromsplendour! Throughout history we havelearnt that things can go really well andthen go south.. look at the crash of the 1929stock market? However even when thingsare really bad, coming together for a nightof drinking, dancing and entertainmentwould always put a pin in the problemsuntil morning, with bankers hitting thebottle while their wives took lovers orturned to the night to make money.

Away from the glitz and glamour of otherburlesque parties, we were happy to put adarker twist on our costumes, from rippedfishnets and smeared makeup todisheveled suits and untamed hair. TheVauderville Rave always pulls a hugecrowd, each person dressed with their owninterpretation of the theme, incorporatingthe look and fall from grace due to theexcesses of power, money and of coursesex.

Absinthe was the tipple of the evening…that certainly added to our ruin for thenight! With an Absinthe cocktail on arrivalit started of the night with a bang!No burlesque show is ever completewithout entertainment in the form ofcabaret., We marveled at the beautiful girlsfalling from the ceiling entangled in silkropes, while entertainers took to the stageto give revelers a modern twist with DJsets and beatboxers and we even saw asword swallower or two! Also dottedaround the club were ‘mini’

SPRINGBREAK ATWAHOO

DV8 OXFORD /// June/July 2011

There are a few traditions in Englandwe don't have the opportunity toembrace, one of which is the annual

American tradition of Spring Break! Welove spring break. Ever since watchingPiranha 3D earlier this year, we have beenwaiting for the opportunity to hit somesunnier climes, have a few drinks, andwitness a wet t-shirt competition (of coursewithout the killer fish!). So we weredelighted when DV8 favourite Wahoo puton a Spring Break themed weekend overthe bank holiday! (Although if Kelly Brookcould have made an appearance thatwould have made our weekend!)

The weekend was put on in conjunctionwith T.O.R. Events climaxed on theSunday night with a UV rave with theparty going on all the way until 4am. Itwas a great weekend at Wahoo, and withlots of people really embracing the themeby getting into swimwear, what was therenot to like! With the next Bank Holiday inAugust we wonder what will be instore?

DV8 OXFORD /// June/July 2011

SOPHIE B.EYE CANDY

I’ve spent the last 3 months writingabout our big social experiment 2Strangers and a Wedding and nowthat’s all over there’s another weddingon the horizon… mine! It’s entirelystrange to think that by the time youread this, I’ll have a different name, adifferent signature and will be a Mrs.

My other half keeps joking that I’vebeen dreaming about this day since Iwas tiny but in reality I‘ve dreamt moreabout love… finding my handsomeprince… than the ceremony itself.

Planning a wedding is just a huge featand something you go into totally blind– you have no idea what’s cheap andwhat’s expensive and it’s a prettynerve-wracking experience. It’s alsomassively fun though – and knowingyou’ve had a hand in creating the endevent is a really nice thought.

We met the registrar last week and gotchatting about some of the mostmemorable weddings he has presidedover, including the one where thecouple’s toddler son announced ‘I needa WEE WEE’ just as the registrar got tothe ‘does anyone know any reason whyI can’t join this man and woman…’ partof the ceremony. Priceless.

If you’re loved up then huge congrats. Ifyou’re not, you could do worse thancheck out www.glidefmdating.com –where lots of local hotties are registered.Because let’s face it, there’s nothingworse than heading into Oxford for anight out, meeting someone and reallyclicking with them… and then findingout they live in the Outer Hebrides andare in town for 2 days.

Give it a go, for me if not for yourself.Let’s face it, after a wedding andhoneymoon I’m going to need to livevicariously through someone else’sdating stories!

You can catch Gaz Wesley weekdaymornings from 7am hosting TheMorning Glory on Glide FM 107.9 thismonth – Sophie’s back on July 1st.

Not only is the Brasserie atMalmaison a truly uniquevenue (being part of Oxford’soriginal prison and now aluxury boutique hotel) but italso serves up simple Britishdishes of outstanding quality!

Set in the heart of the hotel, theBrasserie seats up to 100people in a series of spaces soalways feels cosy and intimate. What also makes this placespecial are the original featuresof the prison; with the oldmetal staircases runningthrough the centre of therestaurant and numerousarched stone doorways. It alsohas private cells (sorry diningrooms!) which can seat from 2-30 people and an alfrescoterrace (the old exercise yard!)to boot.

We had heard the glowingreviews here at DV8, but wedecided to go and see, orrather taste for ourselves. Wearrived at 7.30pm on aThursday evening in May andthe restaurant was alreadybuzzing! We were seated andattended to straight away and

the service was impeccable allnight – although we had ahard job choosing our foodand drinks from such a vastand delicious selection!

We finally chose theArgentinean Malbec/Shirazfrom the extensive wine cellarand to accompany our winewe shared a Rustic Baguettewith Tapenade. We then hadMussels in Saffron Cream anda Rabbit & Chicken Parfait tostart. As for our mains wesampled the 35 day agedRump Steak and Blue CheeseSalad. Then we had Pannacotta for dessert and finishedoff the evening with cocktailsin the stunning bar terrace(previously the visiting room!).

The Brasserie not only servesfantastic food and wine, butalso has a genuine passion forlocal food, sourcing meat fromlocal farms and fish from ourvery own covered market. Soall in all this certainly was adining experience toremember - book your tablenow on 01865 268400www.Malmasion.com!

THE FISHERS 36-37 St Clements, Oxford, 01865 243 003The Fishers Restaurant isdefinitely a restaurant whosereputation as Oxford’s bestseafood restaurant precedes it!We were really exciting todrop by the Oxford branch onSt Clements to check out thehype for ourselves. One of the things we reallyloved about The Fishers is theinterior decoration, therestaurant offers quaint charmthat wouldn't look out of placein the rustic settings of a NewEngland port! The choices onthe menu cater for everyone, including those who may noteven be keen on fish, so therereally is no excuse for notmaking a trip. On arrival wewere seated in the windowand had chance to look out onthe busy St Clements as peoplewent about their business, anddrank a glass of wine, whiledeciding what to have fromthe extensive and deliciousmenu. We decided to start with someDeep-fried Calamari with dillmayonnaise and some Beerbattered Tiger Prawns withsweet chilli dipping sauce, these were the perfect starter

as we both got to try eachothers! The batter on theprawns was perfectly crispand brown (probably not thehealthiest thing in the world, but the taste made up for it!)The main soon followed as wechose the Char-grilledSwordfish steak with garlicroasted peppers (this is adefinite must for people notkeen on fish, the texture andtaste of the swordfish isdefinitely meaty). What would a visit to a fishrestaurant be without atraditional haddock and chips? This again was perfectlycooked, with a healthy side ofmushy peas... one word, delicious! With a daily changing menu,to match the wide range offresh fish shipped in each day,no two trips will ever be thesame! The staff are friendlyand welcoming, with a greatknowledge of the dishesavailable, and what wineswould complement the food. The Fishers is definitely arestaurant in our top ten, andwe cannot wait for our nexttrip!

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH HANNAHTHE LIVING ROOM

How long have you worked as a bartender?I have worked here for the last four monthsCan you flair?I’m practising, so maybe you will see me in theupcoming bartender competition!Any other tricks? My party trick is to drink a lot of Rum!!What is your signature drink?Hannah’s Rum! (see the cocktail of the month)How many cocktails does the Living Room offer? We have a lot on offer, with 70-80 on the menu. Wealso will make anything off the menu, we are allpretty creative, and are always willing to makesomething up!What is your favourite thing about working at theLiving Room? The staff, they are all really fun to work with. AlsoI get to work with a lot of boys as i’m the only girlbartender!

DV8 caught up with local personal fitness instructor Colin Berryman to talk aboutgetting fit for this summer (especially the beach) and what we should be doing to

maintain this throughout the year.Fitness in the summer is the bomb. When it comes to milder months, lighter mornings andevenings, there is nothing better than getting out in the open air and letting off some steam fromday to day life. It helps re-set the mind by whacking endorphins into your body (legal highs).

Top tips for summer exercise-Cycle or run to work instead of driving or catching the bus-Go for a run. Running is key to getting a great bikini body as it uses the whole of the body unlike the cross trainer that onlyisolates areas of the body.-Invest in a heart rate monitor and run keeping your heart rate above 75% of your maximum for at least 20 minutes, 3 times aweek.-Get a group of friends together and do my 6 week programme below. Exercising as part of a team will help as you canencourage each other.

Colinʼs 6 Week Programme

The ideal setting for this is in your local park. Run to the park as your warm up (approx 10 minutes). Then do the followingexercises. Remember to include a ten minute run home as a cool down.

Eat the right thingsNutrition is key for getting a hot bikini body or getting into those budgie smugglers. Slimming clubs are a great way of losingweight for short term goals; they provide you with a network of like minded people who keep you on track by encouraging you,but what happens when you achieve your goal? Yes you guessed it, complacency kicks in and we end up overindulging again!Itʼs my personal belief that we should find out what is good for our own bodies, food wise, within a trial and error process.I believe this should be done by attempting one of the 3 types of diets:- Protein only diets, within my experience this tends to help people who have been trying to lose weight for a long time;the protein helps speed up the metabolism which helps with burning more calories in your day to day activities.- Carbohydrate diets, this is the complete opposite of the above, remembering that all bodies are different all we aretrying to do is find things your body can more easily work with so we speed up the metabolism.- Balanced diet, to create your own balanced diet can tend to help in relation to weight loss. Are you the type of person that is on the go all the time, doesnʼt have time to cook for yourself and ends up eating fast food? Most people donʼt know what goes into takeaway food and it seems no-one is too fussed! 9 times out of 10 we consume toomuch in one portion and the calories we intake are far too great for what our body needs. Fast food tends to be high in fats, salts and sugars, so why not cook for yourself? Cooking for yourself is cheaper, you know what is going into your food and youcan portion control a lot better. Cooking can be a social thing too, why not rope a couple of mates from your exerciseprogramme!!

Remember that you have to put in the effort to see results. Good luck!!
