Light and Heat at Your Command

Glass that transitions between clear and tinted states lets you control how much light and heat enter a space. SunGuard EC glass has an electrochromic coating with Soladigm technology that makes this possible at the flip of a switch or the signal of an operating system.

SunGuard EC is a versatile performer for outside conditions that vary by the season and by the hour. In its clear state, SunGuard EC welcomes daylight and passive solar heat to naturally light and warm the interior space. In its tinted state, this glass blocks unwanted solar heat to reduce the need for air conditioning. At the same time, it controls glare without obstructing the view. SunGuard EC also can be used in combination with a SunGuard low-E coating to improve U-factor by up to five points.

SunGuard EC offers an innovative new way to increase the comfort and control for building occupants, improve energy performance and reduce operating costs, and do so without the use of shades or blinds that obstruct the view and carry cleaning and maintenance costs. This product gives architects the freedom to use more glass while meeting building codes that limit solar heat gain.

SunGuard EC Technical Information

SunGuard EC lets you make the most of changing needs and conditions, transitioning between clear and tinted glass. This optical versatility is made possible by a solid-state coating applied directly to surface #2 of the insulated glass unit. Activated by a low-voltage electric charge, layers of metal oxide within the coating change between four tint states. Integration with the building’s electrical system is simple. SunGuard EC can be controlled by building users or a building management system.

In its clear state, SunGuard EC transmits more than 60% of available natural sunlight and has a 0.47 solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)—exceeding the passive solar heating capability of typical low-E glass.

When fully tinted, SunGuard EC cuts the transmission of sunlight to 2% and lowers the SHGC to 0.09, keeping interior spaces cool, reducing glare and minimizing the need for blinds that block the view.

Low-Power Solution
