Molise borders Abruzzo to the north-west, Lazio to the west, Campania to the south, Apulia to the southeast and the Adriatic Sea to the northeast. It is the second-smallest, least populous, and least densely populated region of Italy. The territory is characterized by mountainous inlands surrounded by hilly coastal plain. The highest peak is Mount Meta and is 2,241 mt. high.

The most important river of Molise is the Biferno. Its source is in Bojano, a village near Campobasso. During the first few kilometres of its course it receives the waters of numerous streams which flow from the Matese mountains. It runs through several villages of the province of Campobasso, forming the Lake of Guardialfiera and finally flows into the Adriatic Sea.

Campobasso is the chief town of Molise. It is situated 750 mt above sea level- surrounded by Sannio and Matese mountains. It is considered one of the coldest cities of Italy. It has an oceanic climate, during the winter, snowfalls are frequent. The wettest time of year is the autumn.

One of the main attractions of Campobasso is the Castello Monforte, built in 1450 by the earl Nicola II Monforte, over Lombard or Norman ruins. The castle has Guelph merlons and stands on a commanding point, where traces of ancient settlements (including Samnite walls) have been found. The current construction is the result of later rebuilding after the earthquakes of 1456 and 1805.The castello Monforte with six towers of the medieval walls remains in the old town.

The old town, that is on a hill, also includes the Romanesque church of San Giorgio. San Giorgio is the Patron Saint of Campobasso; the legend says that he killed a dragon.Other two Romanesque churches are San Bartomoleo and San Leonardo,

The neoclassical cathedral of Campobasso is situated in the new town at the foot of the hill on a lower plain. It is next to the Government Palace (Prefettura)

Campobasso is also an important cultural centre; there is the Provincial Archeological Museum that, with its relics of the Samnites, Frentani and Campani (ancient Italic peoples), is an important place to visit.

All the most important offices of the Region are in Campobasso
