Excerpt from recently published interview in the maiden edition of COLLECTOR. MagazineBlack Collectors Forum (BCF) in conversation with Johannesburg based Nigerian collector Bayo Solarin around his collection and collecting in general.
•BCF: It would be great to know a little bit about who Bayo Solarin is in the context of this interview?•Bayo Solarin: Where do I start! A sociable recluse with a passion (bordering on obsession) for African Art. I was born in Nigeria, lived and worked in England from the age of 13 years old and moved to South Africa 10 years ago. Thus a rather odd mix of Europe and Africa! European by influence, African by the grace of God.•BCF: Was there anything in particular that motivated your interest and passion for collecting art?•Bayo Solarin: I have been asked that question over the years and have tried to identify the magic moment or thing but the reality is that I was motivated by a number of factors. I have always had a love for art and I can only presume that after leaving Nigeria at such a young age, art subconsciously became my connection with home. My wife (my long suffering better half!) has a more interesting assessment which goes something along the line that I have an obsessive personality and tend to immerse myself in anything that I am passionate about. The answer is somewhere in between! •BCF: Can you recollect the first piece you collected and why you chose that particular piece?•Bayo Solarin: Yes I do. It was a stunning work by a Nigerian artist called Godwin Adesoye. It was a beautiful oil work which perfectly captured the beautiful chaos that is Lagos! Still have it in my collection and have a strong attachment to it.
