History ofthe
Institution
The college offering B.Ed. & M.Ed. courses is located at Samdur, Tadong, East Sikkim eight kilometers aheadof state capital, Gangtok on NH10 in a very calm and picturesque surrounding. The nearest railway station
New Jalpaiguri is 117 km and nearest Airport, Bagdogra is 120 km from the College. The mother of Director,late Harkamaya Chhetri left for heavenly abode at the prime of her youth in her 30s. Her efforts to provide
education to her sister with the idea not to overlook the daughters’ education encouraged him to establish acollege in her name to commemorate her ideal thinking for women education which gave birth to the
establishment of Harkamaya College of Education in the year 2003 under Rhenock Educational Society. It isimparting courses in the field of education and has since graduated several success stories.It is a college with
an institutional objective of qualitative development in the pedagogical sciences of teachers and teachereducators and to provide opportunity for such courses for the locals and students of adjoining areas. With
this vision, the management initially started one year B.Ed., programme from the academic session 2003-04and one year M.Ed. course from the academic session 2006-07 in accordance with the recognition of N.C.T.E.
This college was declared as a constituent college of North Bengal University up to 2007. After theestablishment of Sikkim University, the B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses of this college have come under it w.e.f.
2008-09 academic session. It is NAAC accredited in ‘B’ Grade and is recognized by the UGC u/s 2(f) of UGCact 1956. The college also applied for 12b and the result is still awaited.

Gender Sensitization: Meeting was held on 7th August andfinalized that the following members would be in the Gender
Sensitization unit. Dr. Premalata Mohapatra,Principal -Chairman Dr. Savita Mishra, Professor - Member Dr. Arati
Chhetri, Associate Professor – Member Secretary Mrs. DeviKala, Assistant Professor – Member Mr. Pawan Kr. Ray,
Assistant Professor - Member Mrs. Mamta Adhikari, Librarian- Member • Dr. Savita Mishra, Professor, was nominated toparticipate in workshop. • Action plan was prepared withnominated teachers. Morning Assembly conducted by thestudents both B.Ed. an M.Ed. on Women Empowerment.
They have presented play on Women Empowerment. Nextmeeting was held with those members of Committee in
order to finalized the programmes with regard to GenderSensitization. The committee planned to call expert from
Sikkim University so that she could explain about the GenderSensitization. As such Dr. K. Indira, Assistant Professor,
Department of Sociology, Sikkim University was invited forthe Orientation Programme and deliver a speech on ‘Equality
between Man and Women’. Discussion was also made onRole of youth in realizing this in Indian Society and Gender
Sensitization.
