    Seeking After the Son

The upstate New York manwas rich in almost every way. Hisestate was worth millions. Heowned houses, land, antiques andcattle. But though on the outsidehe had it all, he was very unhappyon the inside. His wife was growingold, and the couple was childless.

He had always wanted a little boyto carry on the family legacy.

Miraculously, his wife be-came pregnant in her later years, and she gave birth to a little boy.The boy was severely handicapped, but the man loved him with hiswhole heart.

When the boy was 5, hismom died. The dad drew closer tohis special son. At age 13, theboys birth defects cost him his lifeand the father died soon after from

    a broken heart.

The estate was auctionedbefore hundreds of bidders. Thefirst item offered was a painting ofthe boy. No one bid. They waitedlike vultures for the riches. Finally, the poor housemaid, who helpedraise the boy, offered $5 for thepicture and easily took the bid. Toeveryones shock, the auctioneerripped a handwritten will from theback of the picture. This is what itsaid: To the person who thinksenough of my son to buy this

painting, to this person I give myentire estate.

The auction was over. Thegreedy crowd walked away inshock and dismay. How many of ushave sought after what we thoughtwere true riches only to find outlater that our Father was preparedto give us his entire estate if wehad only sought after his Sonalone? Larry Linville
