A  washing  machine  has  4  parts:  A  drum  to  hold  the  clothes,  a  motor  to  cause  agitation  of  the  drum,  a  pump  to  force  water  and  solvent  through  the  washing  machine,  and  a  filter  for  the  water  and  solvent.    In  order  to  optimize  the  washing  machine,  all  4  of  these  parts  must  be  sized  correctly  so  that  on  component  doesn’t  over-‐power  another  component,  unnecessary  energy  isn’t  wasted  to  run  the  washer,  and  the  washer  will  still  work  if  the  user  forces  far  too  many  clothes  into  the  drum.    The  charts  below  show  how  the  sizing  of  the  pump  and  filter  affect  each  other  and  the  effectiveness  of  the  washer.

The  charts  above  show  how  the  size  of  the  filter  will  affect  the  flow  rate  as  well  as  the  pressure  drop  required  from  the  pump.    The  filter  selection  will  be  determined  on  what  size  particles  we  want  to  remove  from  the  clothes.    Once  the  filter  size  is  selected,  the  above  charts  will  determine  our  pump  requirement,  which  can  be  matched  to  a  pump  model  below.    The  smaller  the  particles,  the  larger  the  pump  is  required.    Look  how  hard  it  is  to  clean  a  smoker’s  clothes!

Hobbies/favorite  sport:  I  enjoy  playing  soccer.    I  also  play  piano  and  compose  music  in  my  spare  time.  Favorite  engineering  class:  Fluid  Mechanics,  with  Professor  Monroe.  Favorite  non-‐engineering  class:  Carillon  150.    I  get  the  opportunity  to  play  the  bell  towers  on  North  and  Central  campus.  What  do  you  want  to  do  before  graduation  I’m  currently  training  for  the  audio  studio  on  North  campus,  and  hope  to  be  certified  by  the  end  of  next  semester.  Favorite  thing  about  North  Campus:  There  is  a  truly  magnificent  9  foot  Steinway  piano  in  the  Stamps  auditorium.  What  is  your  least  favorite  thing  about  North    Campus?        The  piano  in  Stamps  auditorium  is  always  locked.  Favorite  quotation:      "If  you  have  built  castles  in  the  air,  your  work  need  not  be  lost;  that  is  where  they  should  be.    Now  put  the  foundations  under  them."-‐  Henry  David  Thoreau  Do  you  think  that  you  should  be  ChemE  of  the  week  or  know  someone  who  should?      Contact  Peter  at  [email protected]
