CLUB UPDATES

Course  Maintenance  Spring  is  now  officially  upon  us  and  although  the  temperatures  have

remained  cool  so  far,  we  are  starting  to  see  the  dormant  grass  in  the

rough  start  to  grow  once  again.  The  brown  dormant  grass  is

returning  to  it’s  natural  green  color  and  will  start  to  become  a  little

thicker  as  well.  The  fairways  will  also  start  to  fill  in  more  and  the  golf

course  will  look  much  nicer  in  the  coming  month.

Our  greens  have  recently  been  aerated  and  topdressed.  Although  it  is

intrusive,  it  is  very  necessary  and  we  will  be  using  a  fairly  small  core

which  will  limit  the  disruption.  This  process  removes  thatch  from  the

greens  and  allows  more  space  for  water  and  sun  to  increase  the

strength  and  quality  of  the  greens.  The  greens  recover  fairly  quickly

and  you  will  start  to  notice  the  improvement  on  the  greens  very

soon.

      CLUB UPDATES

Course  Maintenance  April  is  always  one  of  our  busiest  months  and  with  a  lot  of  players

comes  a  lot  of  divots.  These  divots  will  fill  in,  although  slowly  until

the  weather  begins  to  get  warmer.  We  always  do  our  best  to  fill

divots  with  sand  but  there  will  likely  be  a  few  shots  that  end  up  in

divots  over  the  next  month  or  so.  To  help  the  fairways  recover

quicker,  we  will  be  verticutting  areas  on  the  golf  course  to  help  them

recover  quicker.  You  will  see  some  diagonal  lines  on  course  where

this  process  takes  place  but  it  should  affect  play.

There  are  many  new  trees  around  the  golf  course  now  as  well.

Mostly  along  the  cart  path  lines  but  there  are  certainly  a  few  more

that  will  come  in  to  play  a  little  more  regularly.  They  currently  don’t

have  many  leaves  on  them  but  as  Spring  moves  on,  we  will  start  to

see  them  fill  in  beautifully.  There  will  also  be  more  color  added  to  the

golf  course,  which  we  are  already  starting  to  see  signs  of,  with  a  few

blooming  flowers  and  a  lot  of  different  colored  bushes.  This  really

brings  the  course  to  life  and  we  all  look  forward  to  seeing  it  in  it’s

best  condition  shortly.

Yours  Sincerely,  Gavin Eckford Director  of  Golf

GOLF NEWS

Across  The  Pacific  By Gavin Eckford

Sheshan  Golf  Club  has  held  a  number  of  member  trips  around  the  world  and  this

year  we  are  excited  to  add  a  new  country  to  the  list.  In  July,  we  are  planning  to  do

a  members’  trip  to  Canada  where  we  will  visit  and  play  golf  in  Vancouver  and

Whistler.  Although  I  may  be  slightly  biased  as  I  grew  up  in  Vancouver  and  lived  in

Whistler  for  10  years,  in  my  opinion,  they  are  two  of  the  most  naturally  beautiful

places  in  the  world.  Vancouver  and  Whistler  played  host  to  the  2010  Winter

Olympics  and  are  popular  destinations  for  people  from  all  over  the  world.  With

summer  temperatures  normally  dry  around  25  degrees,  the  weather  is  perfect  for

outdoor  activities.  Here  is  a  quick  overview  of  Vancouver,  Whistler,  and  some  of

the  golf  courses  we  will  be  playing.

Page 10: E-newsletter April 2013 #2 English

Whistler  is  renowned  as  the  #1  Ski  Resort  in  North  America  but  the  summer  months  are  also  difficult  to  beat.  Although  the  mountains  are  still

snowcapped,  the  summer  temperatures  bring  Whistler  to  life  with  striking

scenery  and  unspoiled  landscapes.  Whistler  is  a  blend  of  rustic  and  luxury,

with  5  star  hotels  and  restaurants  alongside  dozens  of  outdoor  activities

running  through  the  valley  of  the  Coastal  Mountains.

Vancouver  is  a  city  diverse  in  many  ways.  Culturally  you  will  find  influences  from  Great  Britain  and  Europe  to  Native  Indians,  China,  and  America.  It’s  unique

in  that  it  has  all  the  amenities  of  a  modern  city  with  great  restaurants,  casinos,

shopping,  and  culture  mixed  in  with  incredible  natural  beauty.  Beaches,

mountains,  forests,  rivers,  and  lakes  all  lay  gracefully  on  Vancouver’s  doorstep.

Page 11: E-newsletter April 2013 #2 English

Nicklaus  North  Golf  Course  is  one  of  only  three  Jack  Nicklaus  “Signature”  design  golf  courses  in  Canada.  This  golf  course  showcases  a

number  of  Jack’s  signature  traits  such  as  wider  fairways,  massive  deep

bunkers,  and  some  of  the  best  par  3’s  in  the  world.  With  360  degree  views  of

snowcapped  mountains,  the  golf  course  sprawls  along  the  edge  of  glacier  fed

Green  Lake  making  this  course  difficult  to  forget.  It’s  also  not  uncommon  to  see

a  black  or  brown  bear  roaming  the  fairways  alongside  golfers  and  their  clubs.

Chateau  Whistler  is  a  true  mountain  golf  course  with  big

elevation  changes  and  plenty  of

undulations  from  fairways  to  greens.

Carved  out  of  the  bottom  of

Blackcomb  Mountain,  this  Robert

Trent  Jones  Jr  design  is  a  very

challenging  golf  course  for  any  level

of  player.  Each  hole  is  sculpted

through  beautiful  mountain  forests

which  provides  for  a  very  serene

experience,  often  only  shared  with

bears  and  wild  deer.

Page 12: E-newsletter April 2013 #2 English

Big  Sky  Golf  Club  is  plotted  at  the  base  of  the  north  face  of  Mount  Currie  just  a  short  distance  North  of  Whistler.  This  Tour  caliber  design  is  one  of  the

best  in  the  country  although  set  against  it’s  dramatic  backdrop,  it’s

sometimes  difficult  to  focus  on  golf.  Early  season  it’s  not  uncommon  to  hear

and  see  an  avalanche  tumbling  down  Mount  Currie  as  you  play  golf  on

perfectly  conditioned  fairways.

With  plenty  to  see  and  do  in  both  Vancouver  and  Whistler,  this  will  be  not

only  a  great  golf  trip,  but  a  great  holiday  for  all  who  join  us.  With  great

summer  weather  and  better  scenery,  this  member  trip  will  be  one  to

remember  and  I  look  forward  to  showing  you  around  my  hometown  come

July.  Stay  tuned  for  more  details  as  we  confirm  dates  and  itineraries  very

shortly.

Sheshan  Golf  Club  Set  to  Make  History  in  2013

By Cyrus Janssen

In   just   under   three  months,   Sheshan

Golf   Club   will   achieve   a   historic

accomplishment  this  summer  when  it

becomes   the   first   Mainland   Chinese

Golf  Club  to  successfully  bring  a  team

of  junior  players  overseas  to  compete

in  a  series  of  International  Junior  Golf

Tournaments.

Sheshan   Professionals   Cyrus   Janssen

and  Robbie  Sherwin  will  lead  a  group

of  12  Sheshan   juniors   to  America   for

two   weeks   this   coming   July   to

participate  in  a  series  of  tournaments

throughout  San  Diego,  California.

Over   the   past   4   seasons   the   Sheshan

Golf   Learning   Center   has   developed

into   one   of   Shanghai’s   premier

destinations   for   advanced   learning.

With   a   rapidly   expanding   junior

program   and   our   club’s   junior

members   representing   some   of   the

best   local   talent   in   Shanghai   its   no

wonder   why   these   kids   all   have   an

opportunity   to   compete   in   these

premier  events.

Page 14: E-newsletter April 2013 #2 English

America   is   the   best   country   in   the

world   for   promoting   and   scheduling

junior   golf   tournaments   and   young

players   from   around   the   globe

frequently   plan   their   summer

holidays   in   America   to   have   the

opportunity  to  play  in  these  events.

Sheshan’s   team   of   12   Elite   Junior

Players   represent   the   most   talented

level   of   tournament   players   and   we

are   proud   to   become   the   first

Mainland  Chinese  Club  to  support  and

send   a   team   of   children   overseas   to

compete  and  represent  the  club.

We  would   like   to   thank   our   Sheshan

Junior   Elite   Program   sponsors   PING

and  Nike  Golf  and  we  look  forward  to

sharing  the  details  of  our  trip  with  the

entire  membership   as   the   trip   draws

closer.

Over  the  next  three  months  we  will  be

including   more   pictures   and   stories

about  the  12  juniors  giving  our  entire

membership  the  opportunity  to  know

each   junior   more.     Stay   tuned   for

future   updates   on   this   newsletter   as

we  prepare  for  our  trip.
