MARIMATECH continues its leading positionwithin the technology of portable piloting sy-stems. The new series of piloting units will cover a broad variety of piloting applications from channel navigation, docking operations to all kinds of offshore applications.MARIMATECH launched the first generation PPU (Portable Piloting Unit) in the year 2000, and is now presenting the third generation PPU which includes all the features required by pilots based on practical experience. The hardware in all the CAT´s contains the absolute latest technology, including satellite receivers that will not be commercially available before 2009. The hardware is extremely user friendly and robust, allowing it to be a reliable tool in the tough maritime environment.

Wecombinepracticalexperiencewiththelatesttechnology

The equipment must be easy to install in all situations, thus not distracting the focus of the pilot and the job at hand. The system must be user-friendly and intuitive because the navigation display has been designed to match the ECDIS specifications, which are being used by all mariners today. The E-SeaGuide software is designed by pilots based on ideas and experiences from operations all over the world. Software development is constantly

ongoing with regular updates and new features being added as the needs of E-Sea Guide users changes with time.

Qualityinfocus

It is important for everyone to maintain a high quality on hardware as well as on software. MARIMATECH is ISO9001/ATEX certified this being mandatory when dealing with professional navigation tools. The CAT´s are CE and Wheel Mark approved coping with the standards on interference on the ships environment. The software is based on the recommendations stated in the IPPA (Innovative Portable Pilot Assistance) description.

TypicalApplications:

. Manoeuvring in confined waters

. Harbour manoeuvres

. Berthing applications

. Ferry applications

. Offshore FSO/FPSO

. Single Point Mooring (SPM)

. Ship to ship operations

. Rig move

. Ships trials

The system offers modules for trainingoperators, playback of operations, dedicated displays for operating in locks, DUKC (Dynamic Under Keel Clearance), environmental monitoring, real time connection to VTS and radar overlay, tug boat handling with more modules planned.

Introduction

The Portable Piloting Unit (PPU) will be used in nearly all pilot assisted operations within a few years. Technology has brought the weight down, electronic charts are becoming more accurate, and software has become more powerful and user friendly. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS, GLONASS and soon GALLIEO are working hand in hand offering unique reli-ability and accuracy and lets not forget pilots are becoming more IT minded in adopting this new tool.

Several types of systems are available. It is impor-tant, before purchasing, to acquaint oneself with the performance of the large spectrum of choices, in order to ensure that the system selected will do the job needed.

Thetask

The task of a deep sea piloting operation is very different from a berthing operation at an oil or LNG terminal or when performing side by side mooring at sea. Choosing the right tool for the appropriate task is essential for receiving all the benefits a PPU can offer. There are 5 essential attributes that a PPU must fulfill when being used for all piloting tasks:

. Lightweight (The pilots will have to carry the equipment by hand everyday). Quick and easy to set up (A pilot must conce-trate on piloting, not computing when on board a vessel). Small compact size. Robust and reliable. Easy to use

These five attributes have been central to the devel-oping process of MARIMATECH’s latest generation of E-Sea Fix systems – E-Sea Fix CAT I, CAT II & CAT III.During the development of the E-Sea Fix system a mix of expertise, experience and user feedback was available when one attribute conflicted with another. This combined with a lot of time and effort has allowed us to proudly present the E-Sea Fix CAT series to the industry.

Thewaytosafety

The way to safety is a cocktail of several elements. A level of precise communication between ships on par with that of aircraft communication sounds simple. However in practice, connected to the many problems associated with a lack of understanding between pilot and ship officers, is a well-known problem linked to poor phraseology. AIS has become a fantastic tool which is getting better and better as it is adapted by the user, but pilots have become aware of its limitations and so its danger. Through the implementation of AIS, VTS seems to play a less important role, but in reality the opposite is proving true as traffic continues to increase and more importantly, the vessels grow larger.

The latest range of PPUs now being launched offer unique advantages due to their extremely high reliability and accuracy. The new PPU also has a prediction accuracy which is essential for operating with extreme precision in confined areas for safe and efficient berthing.

HowtoselecttherightPPU

Choosing the most accurate PPU, which includes any and all features you could dream of, could prove too expensive and maybe too complex.

Therefore it is important to have a general idea about the classification of each system on offer. In order to keep it simple, these have been divided into three categories, (CAT I, CAT II, CAT III). There are some options within these three categories which lie somewhere in the middle.

E-SeaFixCATI

For a deep sea pilot, to whom the primary need is a chart and navigation monitoring tool with route handling and AIS information the CAT I will be the best choice. The CAT I is the smallest and lightest in the series. It can be connected directly to a ship pilot plug receiving gyro and positioning data, along with AIS informa-tion from the ship and transmit this via Wi-Fi to the pilot’s notebook. In order to provide redundancy the CAT I also con-tains a GPS, and as an option, a built-in AIS receiver enabling the unit to work as a standalone unit should the ships equip-ment fail.

ThetechnologybehindtheCATI:

CAT I is the category where the standard GPS sin-gle frequency (L1) is used. It covers GPS technology similar to what a car receives. Most maritime GPS receivers are in this category and several systems installed on ships have differential receivers tak-ing advantage of maritime GPS corrections from governmental DGPS services. To take advantage of the DGPS receiver it is of course important that the operator knows how to use its various functions.

Most of the new GPS receivers available today have integrated differential corrections based on differ-ent geostationary satellites (designed from precise aircraft landing systems) such as EGNOS, WAAS, MSAS and several others. They are fully automatic and it is important to know where in the world they are available and the accuracy on the location of interest. In most cases, this new technology offers more accuracy than government DGPS services, for which reason most users will veer to-wards this type of differential correction. Typically a new GPS receiver with EGNOS type technology integrated will provide position accuracy better than 2.6 metres which is the accuracy needed for aircraft landing systems (ILS).

TheapplicationoftheCATIis:

. General navigation

. Independent AIS receiver (option)

. WI-FI (wireless) connection to pilot AIS plug

. Transponder functions via UHF, GPRS or UMTS

CATI

E-SeaFixCATII

For the channel and harbour pilot who operate in confined and busy waters and ports, the CAT II will provide both a precise navigational tool and a berthing tool. Worldwide the CAT II category is the most used tool for harbour and channel navigation. With the unique options the E-Sea Guide software provides; berthing lines and a possibility for barometric survey overlays on the electronic chart the CAT II is used to turn vessels in limited spaces, or together with real-time tidal data shown on the pilots’ notebook, it can be used to bring deep draught vessels in at rising water. The CAT II provides heading data and makes the pilot com-pletely independent of the ships’ equipment.

ThetechnologybehindtheCATII:

CAT II is in the category where two GPS receivers and two antennas are combined to be able to measure heading. The technology is single frequency (L1), GPS, phase measure-ments and RTK (Real-Time Cinematic). Apart from the heading added this principle offers better position stability and better speed accuracy compared to CAT I. A built-in rate sensor makes the system robust in its overall performance. Differen-tial corrections from EGNOS, WAAS and MSAS are standard and corrections from shore beacons are a feature that can be added.

TheapplicationofCATIIis:

. General navigation

. Accurate channel navigation (positioning)

. Precise heading and ROT information

. Precise speed information

. Berthing tool (if a speed error of up to +/-2 cm/seconds can be tolerated). Transponder functions via UHF, GPRS or UMTS

. Reception of weather data, VTS targets and radar overlay

. PPU, TDMA transponder functionality (Transmission of own position).

E-SeaFixCATIII

The CAT III is a tool for a pilot performing the most challeng-ing operations. It is extremely accurate and is now used as an alternative to laser docking systems. The CAT III is also a perfect tool for berthing very large ships such as VLCC’s or LNG tankers, precise positioning in docks and locks and for providing the highest reliability in unfriendly environments such as poor satellite coverage or when docking under cranes. The CAT III category is for instance used by the British Army for handling “dead” ships and submarines in confined waters with strong tides.ThetechnologybehindtheCATIII:

CAT III is the highest level in satellite positioning. Similar to CAT II it operates with two receivers to provide heading. CAT III is a dual frequency (L1 + L2) receiver, phase measurements and RTK. Accuracy is position jumps to centimetre and head-ing accuracy to 0.02 of a degree. These extreme accuracies allow us to make reliable prediction calculations. The E-Sea Fix CAT III also has motion sensors integrated that compen-sates for Heave, Pitch / or Roll and keep track of ROT (Rate Of Turn). These parameters are also essential for the prediction of accuracy end-result. The CAT III satellite receiver gets sig-nal from not only GPS but also GLONASS and in future also GALLIEO. With this increase of available satellites the E-Sea Fix CAT III can operate under the most critical situations such as obstructions from cranes, bridges and ships own masts, antenna etc. ‘

CATII

CATIII

TheapplicationofCATIIIis:

. Extremely precise position accuracy under all conditions

. Ultra precise heading and ROT at any time

. Precise speed information at any time

. Berthing tool (2 to 4 times more accurate than CAT II) accuracy equal to laser system. Reception of VTS targets and radar overlay. PPU, TDMA transponder functionality (Transmission of own position).

Conclusion

The above information is provided in order to give the user a rough guide to the three basic categories. User entry to the PPU software is the same in all three. If you are familiar with CAT I there are only a few features added because of the extra advantages in CAT II and III.

Packaging

Just a simple thing but rather important is the carry-ing case. It will have to be able to float and give the best protection to the equipment inside, the computer being the weakest component. The E-Sea Fix new magnesium transport case gives the protection for all 3 CAT systems and the add-on benefit is reduced weight.

We hope this explanation puts the end-user in a better position to justify and select the technology that meets their requirements.

The decreased weight along with equipment robustness, improved performance and user friendly software, lends itself well to a much faster implementation of PPUs.

Confinedwaters

The majority of PPU´s are operating in confined waters where the most important elements to be mentioned are high precision to obtain reliable speed and heading, prediction information, updated sea charts and grounding avoidance information, distances to close objects, victories information on the ships movement, AIS overlay, VTS and radar overlay, Dynamic Under Keel Clearance, and environmental information.

Locks

Operation into locks is one of the best features of the E-Sea Fix CAT III. Extreme precision is needed in relation to speed, heading and position information. Local accuracy charts are needed, which have to be loaded onto the PPU. Here the prediction tool is highly important. Customized solutions are often needed for the optimal solution.

TugBoatintegration

Integration of Tug Boats can be of great interest to the pilot. The Tugs will have to be equipped with the E-Sea Motion system to be a part of the E-Sea Fix radio transponder network. The pilot will be able to see the position of the Tugs as well as the actual power being used. All ships can see each other on the PPU and the monitors in the Tugs being exactly like the PPU screen presentation. Advanced dynamic calculations will be able to optimise the overall operation, so giving the pilot a unique decision tool. Increased safety and time saving are the outcome.

TankerLoadingUnit(TLU)

Tanker Loading Unit (TLU) is from the navigation point of view similar to the SPM operation. The instrumentation is often a little more advanced including Mooring Load Monitoring, remote quick release, emergency shut down and environmental monitoring.

SinglePointmooring.(SPM)

Single Point Mooring (SPM) can be anything from the usual approach information and drift warning information to environmental monitoring and mooring load monitoring. In some cases it also includes monitoring of the buoy related operative information such as flow, pressure, leak-age and environmental monitoring.

Tandemoperations

The FSO/FPSO tandem operation includes guidance information for the pilot for the best possible approach, warning information, drift monitor-ing, environmental monitoring and in some cases mooring load monitoring.

BerthingofVLCC´s/LNG’s

Marimatech is well-known for its laser berthing systems and being the first to introduce this technol-ogy. For many reasons this kind of system will not disappear. The CAT III technology, due to its accuracy, is able to replace the lasers. In the meantime several terminals prefer to have a permanent installed system and will see the CAT III PPU as an add-on to the safe operation of the VLCC´s. It is now becoming standard practice to use PPU´s in relation to receiving LNG carriers. In such cases the PPU´s are also used to monitor the LNGC being along side the berths. Apart from drift warning data being transferred, Mooring Load Monitoring and environmental data are transferred as well.

Training

Proper training is the way to success. The E-SeaGu-ide software is very user friendly and is accessible through a short introduction course. To take full benefit of all the functionality the program has to offer, more in-depth training is always recom-mended.

MARIMATECH has qualified mariners employed to assist our end-users through training, as well as hot-line support.
