A Message from MajorsSteven and Debra AshcraftDear Friend,

In July of 1865, William Booth set up a tent inLondon’s East End. His mission was to meet theneeds of London’s most desperately poor, bringingthem food to fill their stomachs and the hope ofsalvation to fill their souls.

Over the next 150 years, Booth’s vision fueledthe growth of an organization known as TheSalvation Army that now spans more than 126countries around the world. The impact of the Armyhas grown, from a small crowd on that first citystreet to nearly 30 million people served in theUnited States alone each year.

Though much has changed over the years, wehave remained steadfast in our commitment to servethe hungry, the homeless, and those without hope.Newer technologies have aided our work, butnothing can replace the difference that is made by acommunity with a heart for service, fueled by God’slove.

We are blessed toserve as stewards ofyour generosity eachday. Thank you! Wehope you enjoyreading this newsletter,as you learn how yourgiving continues tobless the lives of yourneighbors today.

Blessings,

Majors Steven and Debra AshcraftCentral Kentucky Area Coordinators

The Salvation Army Music SchoolErik has excelled through The Salvation Army’s music school by

learning to play the tuba, trombone, and baritone. In addition toreceiving free weekly lessons throughout the school year, Erik hasattended The Army’s summer music camp, Camp SWONEKY, where hereceived an award for his outstanding performance.

His mother Erica first enrolled him in the Early Learning Center, where he graduated, and is now an active member of The SalvationArmy Boys & Girls Club. Upon hearing about The Army’s free MusicSchool, Erica enrolled Erik and his sister Eliza. Erica gives the musicprogram credit for helping the family, “I love that they get musiceducation at a young age. That’s how many kids learn best, and ourfamily is certainly musically driven.” Between Camp SWONEKY andweekly lessons, the aspiring musicians of The Salvation Army are able toexcel in the art. Music Coordinator Brandon Finnie said, “Erik and hissister are both enthusiastic about the program, and learning music will

help them develop socially as they learn and grow as individuals.”With your donations and contributions, The Salvation Army is able to provide development and instruction

through many different methods, including the musical arts.

Rent & Utilities Assistance Program

Emergency ShelterLuella came to The Salvation Army seeking safety, support, and a

fresh start after numerous crises. She values the accountability andstability that The Salvation Army has brought to her life so quickly.“I’m glad that I came here, I’m okay. I know this is a good place for me;it’s helping me get back on track,” Luella said. She’s excited about hersobriety, a relationship with her children, and God’s blessing of housing.

“My caseworker has been a big help; she referred me to a housingassistance program, and helped me with Vocational Rehabilitation,”Luella said. While at The Salvation Army, Luella has been active in Life

Skills classes, case management meetings, and Safe Haven, a Salvation Army support group for recovery.Luella has come a long way toward her goal of obtaining housing. While Luella has high praise for The

Salvation Army, we know we are simply humble stewards of your generosity. You, our donors and corporatepartners, make it possible for The Salvation Army to provide the homeless with food, clothing, safe shelter, andthe tools needed for these citizens to get back on track. Thank you!

This past winter, Randall contacted The Salvation Army for utility billassistance. A roofer by trade after returning from war, he could notcontinue working due to back pain. Randall was unable to pay his electricbill and faced his heat being turned off this past winter. After anappointment and a bit of information, The Salvation Army was happy toassist the disabled United States Army veteran of Vietnam.

Many times, agencies’ funding for assistance depletes quickly, butthanks to your Red Kettle contributions The Salvation Army was able tohelp. “I wouldn’t have been able to pay my electric during the cold weather, thatwould have been tough,” said Randall.

Fayette, Jessamine, and Scott counties are each serviced by a Salvation Army Rent & Utilities Assistanceprogram. Thank you for giving The Salvation Army the opportunity to help those who need it most.
