Photos from past EMV concerts, rehearsals and summer courses by Jan Gates.

    Notes from the Artistic Director

As I contemplate the many things that we do at EMV, it strikes me that we are a difficult organization to put in a box. We have grown into a creative hybrid that resists definition – we are in almost equal parts presenter, regional producer, collaborative nexus, and music educator. Charting the future for such a multi-faceted organization is both exhilarating and mystifying. With so many options, how do you make choices without feeling that you are somehow neglecting a vital part of who you are? The simple answer I have found is to follow my instinct. I am consistently drawn to artists, programmes and repertoire that inspire my passion and that build community. The 2015-16 Season is filled with music and artists that I hope will inspire you while also nurturing and providing a forum for gifted artists from all over our region and beyond.

The cover of this year’s calendar is a portrait by contemporary French artist Pierre-Yves Russo. It is a beguiling rendering of a woman playing the lute inspired by countless historical paintings on this same theme. Like EMV, it is at once connected with the past and unmistakeably modern. This gorgeous piece, along with the 2015 Summer Festival, “Music for Queens”, informed the concept for this calendar – historical images of women playing instruments balanced with contemporary portraits of prominent female musicians appearing on our series this year. Women have been woefully underrepresented in music history and this calendar is a very small gesture towards addressing this imbalance. I’d like to thank José Verstappen and Christina Hutten for their help in sourcing these images.

Warmest thanks to you, our audience and supporters, for building Early Music Vancouver into a unique, evolving and vital part of our region’s performing arts scene. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

One of the best-loved and well-known of all English operas, Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas tells the tragic tale of Queen Dido’s love and subsequent abandonment by the Trojan hero, Aeneas. Full of expressive arias, memorable choruses, and humorous moments, it is an acknowledged masterpiece. The finale, “Dido’s Lament”, is one of the most recognizable and moving scenes in the history of opera. This performance will be paired with Come Ye Sons of Art, written by Purcell in 1694 to celebrate the birthday of Queen Mary II of England.

Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce, designating at the same time a dance as well as a family of musical genres in Latin-American music. It is this latter meaning and its ancient roots that inspire the title Salsa Baroque. Despite the human and political tragedies surrounding the colonization of the South-American continent, the multipolar musical culture that resulted is distinguished by its fiery spirit and passion: here is music with a unique character that enriches the repertoire of the 17th century with refreshing novelties.

Watermusic – From Princes to Frogs – Orchestral Suites with Four Horns Friday, January 15, 2016 at 7:30 pm | pre-concert talk hosted by Matthew White at 6:45 pm Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamilton Street

Steven Devine music director and harpsichordVictoria Baroque Players

From Princes to Frogs: What happens when the best musical minds like Georg Philipp Telemann, George Frideric Handel, and Jean-Philippe Rameau are given free rein to depict royalty as well as the life of villagers and mariners? Find out in this grand Baroque orchestral programme in which the splendour of four hunting horns provide the platform for music of royal grandeur as well as well as the humorous characterization of animals and raucous village life.

A concert of kings and princes, nymphs, merry sailors, frogs, and crows, all directed by the British harpsichord virtuoso Steven Devine from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Musicians from the Victoria Baroque Players: Christi Meyers, Soile Stratkauskas, and Katrina Russell

German early music star soprano Dorothee Mields returns to Vancouver for a shared recital of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century North German sacred music with American baritone, Sumner Thompson. Marc Destrubé leads the ensemble of solo strings, gambas and a full continuo section.

“No present-day singer understands German sacred music of the seventeenth century better than the soprano Dorothee Mields and, unsurprisingly therefore, no one sings it better.” – International Record Review

An imaginative multi-media concert designed by Alison Mackay for Canada’s revered and treasured Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. A magical journey to the meeting places of baroque art and music – five European homes where exquisite works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Marais are played against a backdrop of paintings by Vermeer, Canaletto, and Watteau.

Yulia Van Doren soprano, Douglas Williams baritoneAlexander Weimann music directorPacific Baroque Orchestra When public performances of opera were banned in Rome by papal edicts in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, opera audiences and composers turned to the dramatic cantata for their fix of lust, madness and death. Under the cover of portraying mythological or historical figures, cantatas could treat the same subjects that the Pope found so objectionable without fear of legal action. George Frideric Handel’s Apolle e Dafne is perhaps the greatest example of one of these mini operas masquerading under the convenient pseudonym of ‘cantata’. Full of exquisite music and the vitality that characterizes Handel’s early years.

“…like a documentary film brought to life: high quality eye-candy and a guided trip through Europe rolled into one, for the price of a concert ticket.” – The Globe and Mail

A refined sound and perfect vocal blend are among the many qualities that define Philippe Herreweghe’s Collegium Vocale Gent as one of the world’s most accomplished vocal ensembles. Exploiting the warm, resonant acoustics of The Chan Centre, they will perform “The Tears of Saint Peter” by Renaissance composer Orlande de Lassus, a cycle of twenty exquisite sacred madrigals that powerfully express grief, regret and forgiveness in music of moving simplicity and consoling contemplation.

The members of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra join forces with the UBC Baroque Mentorship Orchestra and representatives from the Baroque string programme at the University of Washington to perform Handel’s suite for wind band written for the fireworks celebration commemorating the end of the War of Austrian Succession in April of 1749. Fittingly, the festively-sized orchestra of students and professional players will perform a re-scoring of this famous suite for full orchestra that Handel composed to benefit the student residents of the Foundling Hospital in London.
