Haran beehive house reconstruction

Presenter
Presentation Notes
On his way to Canaan, Abram stopped in Haran, living here for many years and growing prosperous before leaving for Shechem (Gen 11:31; Acts 7:2-4). Years later, his grandson Jacob journeyed here and married the two daughters of Uncle Laban (Gen 27:43; 28:10). In Ezekiel's time, Haran was known as a significant trading city (Ezek 27:23). These traditional "beehive" houses shown above are constructed entirely without wood, which is a scarce commodity in this region. adr1005201977

Carchemish citadel and Euphrates River from north

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The site of Carchemish is located on the west bank of the Euphrates River, straddling the modern Turkey-Syria border. The 235-acre site consists of a citadel, an inner town, and an outer town. The citadel and inner town lie in Turkey, and most of the outer town, about 40 percent of the entire site, lies in Syria. Carchemish is mentioned twice in the Old Testament, both times in connection the Egyptian pharaoh Necho II's attempt to assist the Assyrians in battle. King Josiah lost his life in a failed effort to prevent Necho from reaching Carchemish (2 Chr 35:20; cf. Jer 46:2). adr1005191620

Mount Ararat from south

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Mount Ararat is best known to readers of the Bible as the place where Noah's Ark landed. According to the account in Genesis 8:4, the boat landed on the "mountains of Ararat." This could be anywhere in the land of Ararat and a specific location is not given. Greater Ararat (Büyük Ağrı Dağı), with its elevation of 16,945 (5,165 m), is naturally associated with the story. The tradition goes back to at least the 11th or 12th century. Numerous explorers claim to have seen remains of the ark on the slopes. Photo by Barry Beitzel bb39650004

Hattusha, Buyukkale Royal Citadel, main gate and Building M residence

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Hattusha was the capital of the Hittite Empire from ca. 1650 BC to ca. 1200 BC. It is located at the northern edge of the semi-arid Cappadocian steppe. The site is approximately 1.3 miles (2.1 km) north-south and 0.7 miles (1.1 km) east-west in size. The Buyukkale Royal Citadel (Büyükkale) occupies a flat plateau high above the Budaközü Stream. The citadel consisted of three courts linked by gates. Surrounding the courts were various buildings which served as apartments, storerooms and a reception hall. The photo above shows the main gate (in the distance) and the Building M residence (in the middle). adr1006017156

Nemrut Dag, West Terrace, Antiochus I and Zeus-Oromasdes statue heads

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Nemrut Dag is a 7,050-foot (2150 m) tall peak located in the Anti-Taurus Mountains. Atop the mountain, king Antiochus I Theos of Commagene, who ruled from 69 to 31 BC, constructed his mausoleum. The colossal statues on the west terrace (shown above) represent Antiochus I Theos, the personification of the kingdom of Commagene, and Zeus-Oromasdes. The compound deity names reflect the Persian, Greek, and Roman influence on the cultural and religious history of Commagene. In 1987 Nemrut Dag was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. adr1005285111

Source of the Tigris, Birkleyn Caves and Dibni River

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The source of the Tigris River is located in the Korha Mountains, a part of the Southeastern Taurus mountain chain. The photo above shows the Dibni River which becomes the eastern branch of the Tigris River. The Assyrian kings Ashurnasirpal II and Shalmaneser III claim to have reached the source of the Tigris in their annals. Shalmaneser III, the Assyrian king who fought Ahab and subjected Jehu, describes in his annals how he washed his weapons at the river's source, offered sacrifices to the gods, and created rock reliefs and inscribed them with praises to the god Assur and his own heroic deeds. adr1005274256

Tigris River and Tur Abdin west of Hasankeyf panorama

Presenter
Presentation Notes
About 3 miles (5 km) east of the confluence of the Batman and Tigris Rivers, the Tigris Rivers leaves the plain and enters a canyon for the second half of its eastward course. The Tigris River continues past Hasankeyf, and then is joined by the second and third of its more powerful tributaries, the Garzan and Botan Rivers. After being joined by the Botan River, the Tigris River turns southeastward towards Cizre where it crosses the border into modern Iraq. The Tigris River flows about 1,150 miles (1,850 km) from its source in the Taurus Mountains to its merging with the Euphrates River at Al Qurnah about 120 miles (190 km) north of the Persian Gulf. Narrower and with a steeper gradient than the Euphrates, the Tigris River was prone to flooding but was not used for irrigation until the Islamic period. A major storm can raise the water level by 20 feet (6 m) in a few hours. adr1005212301

Euphrates River at Birecik view south

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Euphrates River in the Bible The Euphrates River is one of four that flowed from the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:14). The Lord promised to give Abraham the land between the Euphrates River and the river of Egypt (Gen 15:18; cf. Deut 1:7; 11:24; Josh 1:4; 24:2). Jacob fled from Laban across the Euphrates River (Gen 31:21). King David built a monument along the Euphrates River (2 Sam 8:3; 1 Chr 18:3). Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms as far north as the Euphrates River (1 Kgs 4:21, 24; 2 Chr 9:26; cf. Ps 72:8). The Lord promised to bring an invader from the other side of the Euphrates River (Isa 7:20; 8:7), but also to bring them back from exile from beyond the Euphrates River (Isa 11:15) and restore their dominion over the land “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zech 9:10, LEB). Jeremiah accused the Israelites of faithlessness to the Lord by asking why they went to “drink the waters of the Euphrates” (Jer 2:18, LEB). The sixth angel will pour out his bowl on the Euphrates, causing it to dry up and allow passage of the enemy kings to attack Israel (Rev 16:12). adr1005201675

Tarsus city street

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Tarsus was the main city of southeast Western Asia Minor. Located on a fertile plain along the Cydnus River, it was ten miles north of the Mediterranean coast. Tarsus was the hometown of the apostle Paul (Acts 9:11; 21:39; 22:3), a city of great importance (Acts 21:39) as a learning center of the ancient world, alongside Alexandria and Athens. Notably, Jewish citizens of Tarsus were granted Roman citizenship. As a child, Paul was raised in Jerusalem and properly educated under the tutelage of Gamaliel, a member of the Sanhedrin (Acts 22:3). Paul’s trade, tentmaking, may fit well with Tarsus, a city well-known for making a certain type of felt cloth from the wool of shaggy black goats, although some argue that “tentmaking” actually signifies a type of leatherworking. In any case, Paul likely learned his trade while living in Jerusalem. tb123000186

Lystra from south

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Lystra served as a market town of Lycaonia, located in south central modern-day Turkey. In 6 BC Augustus made Lystra a Roman colony in order to protect routes into the Taurus Mountains and designated that a Roman road (called the “Imperial Road”) should be built between Lystra and Pisidian Antioch. During this time, a temple to Zeus was also constructed on the site. Roman veterans who settled here were quickly assimilated with the natives. Paul preached at Lystra on his first missionary journey, after being driven from Iconium (Acts 14:6-22). After healing a man, Paul was stoned and dragged outside the city walls. He later returned through Lystra to encourage believers there and to appoint elders. Paul traveled through Lystra on his second (Acts 15:40-16:4) and likely his third (Acts 18:23) missionary journeys. tb041105519

Seleucia ancient harbor remains

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Seleucia was an important political, military, and economic game piece in the Ptolemaic-Seleucid wars. In 63 BC Rome designated Seleucia a free city and then, in AD 70, made Seleucia the base for the imperial fleet. Seleucia was the seaport from which Paul and Barnabas left with John Mark for their first missionary journey (ca. AD 49). It is also likely that they landed here on their way back from Attalia to Antioch (Acts 14:26), and that Barnabas and John Mark left from here when parting company from Paul and heading for Cyprus (Acts 15:39).Very little remains of ancient Seleucia. Excavations since 1937 reveal an outline of the city area, which was composed of three parts: the acropolis, the residential area, and the port (above). adr1005179656
